One Week in May

It is that special time of the year where we celebrate craft beer even more than we usually do. American Craft Beer Week!

So, get out there and show the craft brewers that you appreciate that they offer you so many great choices in beer!

Here is a snapshot of where I will be headed.

Monday, Maximilliano for pizza and Craftsman beer flight

Tuesday, I will be at Tony’s Darts Away for a Firestone-Walker night. Maybe snag some more Wookey Jack.

Wednesday, On to Beer Belly to taste Fruet from the Bruery for the first time.

Saturday, the Farmer’s Market themed event at Blue Palms. Followed by Eagle Rock for their annual Session Fest. Low ABVs with big flavors.

Tony’s is 2

So many L.A. craft beer locales are turning two! I think it is a great age and a great sign that the beer culture is taking hold of the City of Angels. And here is all the info for next week’s party.

“To celebrate their 2nd anniversary, beloved Burbank watering hole Tony’s Darts Away will be more than doubling their size for the day by adding an extended outdoor deck and bar and hosting an all-day beer festival on Saturday, April 21st from 11am to close.

While they won’t be serving their regular brunch menu in the morning, the kitchen will be cranking out a selection of menu favorites from Chef Randal St. Clair all day long, including their Jailhouse tacos (vegan or non-vegan chili ladled over Fritos, jalapenos, salsa, Daiya or Tillamook cheddar, sour cream optional) and popular vegan and non vegan sausages.

Of course, a celebration of Tony’s Darts Away would be nothing without beer – and beer champion Paige Reilly will be tapping some extremely rare specialty brews throughout the day, including Cuvee de Tomme, Supplication, Sucaba, 4 Calling Birds and MUCH more.”

Admission is $30 (includes 5 generous taster pours and a commemorative glass)

Note: additional tasters can be purchased on site (5 for $20)

A limited number of presale tickets are available for purchase at Tony’s Darts Away.

The return of the Winter colLAboration!

Here is the full info on the re-scheduled Winter colLAboration event.

Winter ColLAboration is back on! The mobile craft beer garden (from the brains behind Tony’s Darts Away/Mohawk Bend/Golden Road Brewing, Verdugo Bar/Surly Goat, Blue Palms and 38 Degrees) will be revived in the form of a weather-proof, indoor late-winter wonderland on Sunday, February 26th at the Belasco Theater in Downtown L.A. – located conveniently near the Metro Blue Line. 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

As previously planned, the garden will feature a selection of winter brews and favorites from: Anchor Steam, Avery, Bootleggers, Bruery, Beachwood, Cismontane, Dogfish Head , Eagle Rock Brewery, Eel River, Firestone Walker, Hangar 24, Golden Road Brewing, Lost Abbey, New Belgium, Oskar Blues, Russian River, Sierra Nevada, Smog City, Stone, TAPS and many more.

Food will be available onsite.

Limited-edition Winter Fest Steins are $15 while supplies last. Any 2011 ColLAb glasses can be used for admission; most beers will be $5 to $6.”

to ring in 2012

If you haven’t settled on a party for New Years Eve, here are two in the Los Angeles area that you can try (if tickets are still available)

1) Tony’s Darts Away will have one 9pm seating featuring an abundance of vegan and non-vegan fare and beers. $95 for you all you can eat AND drink, plus a commemorative glass (tax and gratuity included).

Tony’s will also be raffling prizes throughout the night, including vintage California craft beer; gift certificates for Tony’s Darts Away + Mohawk Bend; Golden Road Brewing swag; and the grand prize: brewing a batch of beer with Golden Road Brewing’s brewmaster, Jon Carpenter. For reservations, email NYE2012@tonys.la

2) City Tavern in Culver City will be hosting a “Brew Years Eve” Beer Garden. From 10pm to 1:30am, $68 will allow patrons to enjoy unlimited beer, wine & champagne, plus a glass an extra special toast at midnight; a reduced $56 price tag will be extended to guests with an accompanying dinner reservation (full kitchen ‘til 10pm).

In addition, City Tavern’s notorious table tap booths can be reserved for $100 per person (each booth seats 6-8, 10 if you’re determined/overly friendly), and includes unlimited table taps, wine & champagne, plus an extra bottle of champagne to toast at midnight.

Hangar 24 + Tony’s Darts Away =

What you see in the glass is the third in the barrel roll series from Hangar 24, Pugachev’s Cobra. It was in attendance last night at Tony’s Darts Away along with a bevy of beers from Redlands.

Joe Savage & Rafael Hurtado from the brewery were in attendance too. Talking to the crowd that grew as the night progressed. (Side note – It has been good to see large turnouts for this and last night’s Library Alehouse FiftyFifty night. Especially in a holiday week)

I started with a sampler tray….From left to right, you have the winter warmer, Amarillo Pale Ale, Anja and the Helles. I was most surprised by the Helles. It was light and bubbly and filled with grain notes from start to finish. It really tasted fresh and alive. But my favorite of the tray was the Anja, a pro-am Belgian ale that had that light bubbly-ness with some fruit and spice notes and a touch of vanilla. I will order that again.

I did not partake of the Double IPA, yet. I am heading to the brewery itself on Christmas Eve to pick up a bottle or two but I did end the night with a bang. The aforementioned Pugachev. It was thick and viscous. Poured a dark black with an espresso colored head. It was maple syrup sweet at first and then some roasted notes and bourbon crept in to balance. It did not taste like 16.5% alcohol though some aging will probably smooth it out even more. I am glad I have a bottle to store away.

Tony’s Darts Away for New Years Eve

Here is the scoop…

“Doors open at 8PM. Vegan or Not Vegan feast, unlimited pours all night long, reserved table for the whole night and a Tony’s 2011 beer glass. $75.

Starting at 10:30, we will have a few more people join us for an after dinner celebration that will include unlimited pours and a Tony’s 2011 glass but seating will be very limited. $40.

DJ Randy Sosin is confirmed to play!

come first serve. We will call all requests and take credit card
payment or people can pay in cash at the pub.”

LA Beer Week – Report # 3

Two events to talk about today:

Stone Archival at Tony’s Darts Away.
I have to admit that I had planned on visiting the Oinkster for Craftsman beer and BBQ. For whatever reason, I thought I could just mosey in an order some cue and a beer. It was not that kind of event. And I missed the ticket window. Bummer for me. But the great thing about LA Beer Week is that there are other things to do!

So I headed to Burbank for more Stone. I had a nice glass of the 09/09/09. It was rich and mellow. Belgian notes had really receded to the background and added a slight tint at the end. The orange and vanilla talked about when it was brewed had also faded a bit. All in all, a lovely dessert beer if you have any and are willing to open it now.

I was going to have another Double Dry-hopped Sublimely Self-Righteous but the taps were pitching a fit. The crew at Tony’s soon got the snafu fixed and had to play catch up with the large and growing crowd. So to finish, I had another San Diego beer. San Salvador Saison from Ballast Point.

This is what the brewery says about it, “The idea started as a San Diego Farmhouse Ale using local ingredients. We wondered what the Kumeyaay Indian’s were eating when Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo climbed out of his flagship boat, the San Salvador, and onto the shore of Ballast Point in 1542. Also, what might have Cabrillo stocked on his boat before he left Acapulco (then called Navidad) 3 1/2 months earlier? So with some research we tracked down a fun mix of ingredients for a Belgian inspired San Diego indigenous Ale.

With some help from our friends at The Linkery, North Park Native Plants and Wingshadow’s Farm we were able to track down ingredients like corn, pine nuts, agave, elder flower, white sage, manzanita berries, curacao and local sage honey. The malt bill consisted of Belgian pale malt, caramunich, biscuit, wheat and corn. The result is a 7.5% ABV, brown beer that really has to be tasted to be understood. It tastes like the San Diego countryside.”

As you can see, it is a beer without a category. Is it brown, saison, regular Belgian? More the first with a bit of the latter and not the middle. A very good beer with lots of individual flavors. Just don’t order one hoping for a saison.

Last night, again I was not vigilant enough to the Beer Week Calendar. I thought I could saunter into the Surly Goat and maybe have cheese and beer presented by the Hot Knives. Well, A it was another sold out ticketed event and B, it wasn’t even at the Surly Goat!

But again the depth of events saved me. Surly Goat was pouring some special Maui Brewing beers. I tried Ode to Carol which either didn’t survive the journey to the mainland or was one of the lightest Belgian ales on record. I also had their Hula Honey Lager which was only OK in my book. Others at the bar though really enjoyed it.

3 DAYS LEFT. Be sure to check out all the happenings at the LA Beer Week event page.

LA Beer Week – Report # 2

The 2nd Beer Float Showdown presented by FoodGPS and held at the Verdugo was a rousing success with a bunch of people taking the leap into the realm of beer and ice cream.

Four competitors created really original floats with most involving fruit beers. Here are the four floats in pictorial form.

# 1 from Ladyface Brasserie

# 2 from Simmzy’s

# 3 from Boneyard Bistro
Here is the description of the winning float, “Boneyard Bistro bar manager Rory Snipes made a float using Floris Apple, Bourbon-salted caramel-cinnamon ice cream, and a garnish of green apple coated with caramel cinnamon crumble.” Since it was such a hit, it may end up on the regular menu.

# 4 from Tony’s Darts Away

Since there is no such thing as too much ice cream or too much beer, next stop was Scoops on Monday night for some incredible artisanal ice cream made with beer as a highlighted ingredient. I had the apricot/Chimay which was really good. You got a both fruit and beer solidly. The Hazelnut Lost Coast combo also worked wonders.

To further tempt you to go, here are some photos of the deliciousness… (Double click the photos to see the combinations)

Last weekend….

I am still recovering from 2 big events here in Los Angeles. The best part being that both were food and beer related.

On Saturday was Woodshop 5.1. Held at the Blue Palms and stretching from 9:30 in the AM with beer mimosas.
woodshop breakfast
Along with the mimosas was a great and very unique breakfast. Truffle hash browns, Belgian breakfast burritos, fruit with festina peche beer. Excellent way to start the day! And if that wasn’t enough, we got a special dessert from the new Four Cafe in Eagle Rock
plum dessert
Then it was on to the beer. 24 blind taps. Plus bottle sharing going on left and right. People were very generous. Which I now almost take for a given at these events. I got to sample beer from Flossmoor station. Sours from many different places and an awesome coffee beer from Bell’s Brewing.
woodshop bier
Palate fatigue limited me to only some of the 24 taps but my winners for the day were the Odonata Saison (making it’s first visit to SoCal) and the super fresh Moylans Hopsickle.

Big kudos to Dave, Chris and Brian for putting in the hard work to do this event.

Moving on to Sunday, it was time for Firestone-Walker and Tony’s Darts Away and the Dionicess VI.
dionicess
Great beer and great food for a great cause, The Real Medicine Foundation. Food by the staff at Tony’s and Randy Clemens (who has a new cookbook coming out) and beer provided by Jace Milstead and Firestone.
beer at dionciess
The two selection of fries were my favorites and then there was a little beer at the end with dessert, starts with a “P”.

More details to follow in my weekly posting at FoodGPS on Thursday.
