Hop Candy

If you are still looking for something to stick into the stocking of your beek geek friends this Christmas (oh and if you are near Belmont Station in Portland), grab some hard candy.

Oh, it’s made with hops. Bitter and sweet and tasting of Fuggles or Cascade hops.

I googled and bing’d the heck out of the interwebs but could find no company that manufactures them or any photos. All I know is that they exist, like the Yeti.

  1. ‘B-Hoppy’ the ORIGINAL Hop Candy is a very small company based out of n.e. ohio and is keeping a low profile until i can get a grip on things. thanks for your support.

  2. Thanks for the update. Low profile is fine. I just want people to know that hops are being used in other ways by inventive people like you.

  3. Hey bob we ate lunch at bells do you remember me from ur beer expedition stop at bells in october 2010. Interested in some more b hoppy candy. shout me an email when u get time

  4. Max, wasuup? I reckon lunch was out on the back patio? Hey, I recently got one a-them thair touch tone phones – you know. And I dry my clothes outside on a rope strung between my maple tree and my deck. I never had cable and just recently found out what debit cards are all about. I think maybe you understand where I’m going with this. If you could send me a ‘mind message’ detailing how I can get in touch with you, that’d be great – just not tonight as I’m having a few ‘B-Hoppy’ I.P.A.’s and probably would get it wrong. The Grape and Granary sells it online and Northern Brewer should have it advertised any day now. Hope our paths cross again sometime man. Hop On!!

  5. Thank u ! hop to see u soon. Just cheked out Livery, what anice place. Ill look in thoser places for ur pleasurable candy! Awesome!

  6. Max,
Glad you got the message. This whole cyber-space thing far out! Checked out Livery web site – looks like a cool joint with tons of different beers. One other place selling the candy is Adventures in Homebrewing outside Detroit. Sorta in your neck of the woods. Hoppy wants to start a 4:21 club – “it’s all about the HOPS”! Workin’ on a website first. Adios!

  8. Bob,
I own a brewery in So. Cal. and I had a chance to try your hop candy, which I think is delicious! I would love to sell them to our customers in our tasting room. If you see this post shoot me an email at paul@iebrew.com and maybe we can work something out.

    Thanks!
    Paul

  9. Sean, isn’t Belmont Station selling them any more? I sent Carl an email but he hasn’t gotten back to me. Let’s Brew should have their order very soon and HBX, out by the airport, should get their shipment in towards the end of the week.

  10. I’m not sure about the geography of Cal. but William’s Brewing and MoreBeer have them. Hopefully the Sunset Beer Co. may start carrying them and I know they’re in L.A.. Stay tuned!

  11. Bob, I absolutely ADORE these candies! I’m getting mine a Hennesey Homebrew in upstate NY. The cascades are great, but the fuggles are amazing. Are there other flavors yet to try???

  12. Hey Bob,

Great to find you and know that there is actually someone behind those awesome hop candies. I work at a beer store in NC called tasty beverage and I be interested in contacting you about placing an order. I know the owners would be interested as well. If you can get back to me at aws0326@me.com and we can coordinate an order.

    Thanks!!

    Aaron.

  13. Evan,
Thanks a lot and it seems you’re in the minority as the Cascade is outselling the Fuggle by about 10:1. I’m replacing it with EKG and I can’t remember if I sent them any samples. Shipyard up in Maine has the EKG but it may not be listed. Twin Lakes Brewing over in Delaware also has some. Check out the ‘B-Hoppy’ group on facebook to keep updated. Thanks again!

  14. Evan,

Thanks so much for liking the candy but you’re in the minority as the Cascade is outselling the Fuggle by about 10:1. I’m replacing it with East Kent Golding which is a little more refined and has a very nice spicy character to it. I can’t remember if I sent Russ any samples but I’ll make sure to send some with his next order (when I got home from work tonight I found his message on my answering machine for a reorder). Shipyard in Maine has the EKG (don’t know if it’s listed on their site or not) and I just sold some to Twin Lakes Brewing over in Delaware last weekend on the way home from the beer/wine fest down near Dover. Thanks again and make sure you don’t eat too much – all that sugar isn’t good for your teeth. Everything in moderation!

  15. Hey Max,

If you’re still out there I just wanted to let you know that Bell’s General Store should have all three varieties (Cascade, EKG & Saaz) by Wednesday. Thanks for the support brother, and Hop ON!!

  16. Love B-Hoppy candy in both EKG & Cascade, but wish you would bring back the Fuggles too – some people just like bitter vs. sweet. Have you ever considered using Barley Sugar, like they make the kid’s pops out of? Then you’d have a complete beer experience! Barley Sugar is less sweet and has a very smooth feel on the palate – I think it would be rather nice.

  17. Hey Art,

Thanks a bunch! A lot of things have been suggested over the years about what to do with the candy and I listen. Unfortunately I’m just a one man band at this point with a day job and my options with the candy are limited. There are other folks out there making “beer candy” but I kinda like the subtle nuances you can discern between the hop varieties in the ‘B-Hoppy’ form. You can get a great impression what a particular hop has to offer by drinking a beer that’s heavily late-hopped/dry hopped with that particular variety, but you also get malt and yeast character along with the goodness. In the candy, the hops have nothing to hide behind. One of these days I’d like to offer some different product but I’m not to that point just yet, so thanks for your opinion and get in touch with me. I still have some Fuggle left but it’s kinda old and can’t really sell it. Just can’t stand to see anything go to waste so it’s yours if you like.

    Thanks again,

    Bob

  18. After 4.5 years, it looks like the candy may actually be catching on so ‘B-Hoppy’ cobbled together a webpage: b-hoppy.com. Not too pretty but it should help. Thanks for the support & Hoppy Trails~

    Bob
