Hammer-Humpty-Immel-Cobra

Hangar 24 has been growing at a furious pace and one reason is their barrel roll series of limited beers. One of them, Pugachev’s Cobra is returning along with a celebration of all of their beers….

Celebrate the “return of winter ..and… bourbon barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout, Pugachev’s Cobra on Saturday, Dec. 8. Hangar 24 will also be marking the occasion by hosting an inaugural Barrel Aged Beer Tasting Event that day with twelve different beers to choose from for sampling.

Pugachev’s Cobra, which won gold at the 2012 California State Fair, is an intense assault on your senses. This Russian Imperial Stout, with a thick caramel head, is bursting with aromas of chocolate, vanilla, oak, bourbon, licorice and dark fruits. Flavors of chocolate-covered plum, sweet malt, bourbon and roasted coffee explode on the pallet with every sip. Pugachev’s Cobra features three different-dark roasted malts and rich maple syrup in a truly unique brewing process to create complexity and depth. Once fermented, it’s then aged for eight months in freshly emptied bourbon barrels. While Pugachev’s Cobra can be enjoyed the day it is purchased, Hangar 24 recommends cellaring the bottle for up to three years to receive the full flavor effect.

Pugachev’s Cobra gets its name from an aerial maneuver where a pilot suddenly raises the aircraft nose to near vertical before dropping back to attack mode. Pugachev’s Cobra was first released on Dec. 10, 2011 with 3,495 bottles; due to the extremely popular demand for the craft beer, Hangar 24 has increased its production for 2012 to an estimated 6,000 bottles.

Attendees of the inaugural Barrel Aged Beer Tasting Event will be able to sample six, 4oz pours of any of the following Hangar 24 Barrel Aged craft beer:

· On Draught:
o 2012 Pugachev’s Cobra
o 2011 Pugachev’s Cobra
o 2012 Hammerhead
o 2011 Pugachev’s Cobra aged in Rye Barrels
o 2011 Immelmann aged in Rye Whiskey Barrels
o 4th Anniversary Dopplesticke Alt aged in Rye Barrels

· In Bottles:
o 2012 Pugachev’s Cobra
o 2011 Pugachev’s Cobra
o 2012 Chandelle
o 2012 Hammerhead
o 2011 Humpty Bump
o 2010 Immelmann

Pugachev’s Cobra will be available for sale in 750mL bottles ($20 each, limit 6) and draught in Hangar 24’s Tasting Room in Redlands, California. Limited Southern California distribution to on- and off-premise locations will begin on Monday, Dec. 10.

Tickets are available on Dec. 8 for $25 in the Tasting Room. The first 250 participants will receive a complimentary, Hangar 24 Barrel Aged Beer taster glass. Hangar 24’s Tasting Room will be fully open on Dec. 8 and will be serving all of its craft beer styles.”

In the Holiday Spirit

You may know me as Sean from Beer Search Party or Sean who has a column on FoodGPS or Sean who fills in the beer lists for the weekly LA Beer Blast but I am also a member of the 4 Points Beer Advisory Group. Which means that I will always be giving you info on their monthly events.

Looks like a great list and you can add dd Timmermans Pumpkin Lambic and Affligem 950 Cuvee – Quadruple Hopped to it. You won’t be disappointed if you buy a ticket or need a room after it.

Pacific Plate

There are many breweries bubbling under the surface here in the Los Angeles area and here is some positive news from one of them, Pacific Plate via Jonathan Parada! “..we found a location in San Dimas and will be signing the lease sometime this month. Supposing the licensing goes well we can look forward to having a tap room open as early as February or as late as July 1st.”

And it looks like the brewery swag will be really cool, “We’ve found an exciting relationship with a clothing company called Loud & Obnoxious that have become full-time partners of our company and are heading up the marking/merchandise of the company. They’re looking to turn the name Pacific Plate into more than just a beer, but a brand, a style. With some really innovative artists on board we’re looking to design labels/ logos for two lines of beer.”

But let’s focus on the beer, shall we, “First, our historically accurate Ales/ Lagers will consist of a Double Decoction Bavarian Heff, a California Common, and a Trappist Duble.

Our second line will be modern day fusions of popular styles with Central American Flavors, Horchata Stout: An English Milk Stout brewed with cocoa beans and cinnamon, Mango IPA, Agave Wheat, and our WidowMaker IPA.” I am glad to see a twist on the near forgotten milk stout. Looking forward to tryin’ them.

DieN’Isis

Here in L.A., we are treated to the occasional DioNicEss events. Where gastronomy and beer meet. And they are back again for a Zombie themed evening that involves foodstuff’s that a zombie would enjoy and beer that I (and you) would enjoy.

“Also, we received commitment from another one of the breweries that will do a custom batch for the gig…Taps…so Victor will do one, the Bruery will, Monkish will, Beachwood will, and I believe Martin Svab’s brewery (Phantom Carriage) will be open by then and he wants to do a batch for us…wooohoooo!”

You can read the first press release about the event HERE

Fall Fest on Sunset

Tomorrow, that would be Saturday, October 27th for an all day Fall Fest celebrating the end of summer heat and the return of bigger, heavier beers. On tap will be a mix of Fest Biers and Pumpkin Ales with food pairings of sausages, chocolates and other goodies.

It is the 1st Annual Sunset Beer Co. Fall Fest! or otherwise known as The Return of the Big ‘n Heavy

And if you are in the Eagle Rock area, Colorado Wine Co. (the ancestor of Sunset Beer) is in the process of moving. A process that should finish by the end of this month. A smidgen west towards Glendale to a bigger space. That means, more beer! Six taps to be precise with the plans for tap takeovers too!

Hops for Hopes

One of the charities that benefits from L.A. Beer Week doesn’t stop there. They have a November event (the 10th to be precise) at Santa Anita Race Track at 6:30 sharp. A beer pairing dinner. Check out their website and see if it strikes your fancy.

FoodGPS Teaser – BAM Fest 2012

I finally attended my first BAM Fest in Santa Monica and thoroughly enjoyed my drinking day. I will talk more about it tomorrow on FoodGPS but for now, here are some photos to whet your whistle….

18th Street filled up mighty quick as the event was all but sold out by opening time.

One of the many fine beers that I sampled on the afternoon.

I found another winner from the Smog City line-up.

I got to sample Abigaile beers for the first time without having to travel all the way to Hermosa.
