Fuh-Ment

The Heritage Radio Network is home to the Fuhmentaboudit! podcast with co-hosts Mary Izett and Chris Cuzme of Cuzett Libations that is set to return in September with new episodes. And for now, a special episode was released to converse about women in craft beer and the Beers With(out) Beards Week in New York.

What perked my ears up and put this podcast on my to-listen list is the fact that they don’t want beer branding to change because if a brewery just has to put out some cringe inducing label that demeans women, it helps the discerning consumer to weed out the bad apples.

Once I have taken a listen, I will report back on how I like the podcast.

A Beer & A Podcast – The Dave Chang Show

I have already highlighted one Ringer podcast and now I am back with another. But this one delves (at first) into the opening of the Majordomo restaurant by Dave Chang of Momofuku fame.

The podcast starts with episodes before the restaurant opens and then into a few episodes after the initial start of service. Bill Simmons is around for these episodes to add in sports analogies and the voice from outside to the proceeding which really do shed light on the process of opening a brand new restaurant especially in a city that Chang has not opened a restaurant in before. Not to mention the location which is not Beverly Hills to say the least.

You will get hungry while listening even though there is some repetitious sections (enough about the Kimmel dinner already!) but buried in the discussion are some great realizations about how to manage and how to delegate and just how to be a boss which I think are even stronger than the restaurant topics.

The beer choice is easy. Grab a crowler or a 4-pack of cans from Highland Park Brewery. Their new Chinatown location is a two minute drive from Majordomo. Maybe you can get the Quinoa Cowboy Pale.

A Book & A Podcast – 30 for 30

Combine exercise with a guru and you get a recipe for both “Hot Yoga” and for abuse of power. The ESPN 30 for 30 podcast took a 5 part deep dive into Bikram Yoga and its founder/creator.

This is not for the faint of heart however. From the disgusting image of carpeted yoga studios without mats that reek of sweat from the intense 29 pose routine to the hideous revelations that Choudhury used his power to coerce women are disgusting to say the least. That he has avoided capture and seems to be living well just adds a nasty icing to the cake.

Since after you listen, you may be leery of a beer and yoga session, I would recommend finding a good Spa Water (sub-style) beer. Both Monkish and Ohana have made one in the past. Or you could look for the new Deschutes or Rogue Kombucha infused beers.

A Beer & A Podcast – Lost Notes

L.A. is blessed with two large NPR stations. KPCC broadcasting from Pasadena and the music-centric KCRW from Santa Monica.

That is the segue to this month’s podcast, Lost Notes.

Basically it is the stories behind the music. I groaned when I saw that one was about the oldie Louie, Louie but that was a seriously fascinating look at a song and how it got stuck in our collective heads. The fact that one version became famous despite being poorly done is amazing.

Later shows delve into Johnny Cash, Captain Beefheart and New Edition. Eclectic to say the least.

And to drink? Well if you type eclectic, music and beer into Google, I bet that Dogfish Head would come up in the top 5, so look for one of their music collaboration beers or look for their Mixed Media wine/beer hybrid and learn some music and beer history.

A Podcast & A Beer – Planet Money

You don’t need to major in economics to enjoy the Planet Money podcast from NPR. This spin-off from the This American Life Podcast will educate you on all sorts of topics that revolve around money.

Wanna learn about branding and vodka? The history of the Social Security number? About the hop market? Yes, they do talk about beer on occasion. This show is a tight 15-20 minutes, perfect for a short commute or drive to a brewery tap room.

You will need to stay sharp so I would suggest drinking a Firestone Walker lager or perhaps a Verdugo West Gigil lager because maybe, in the future, the pod will talk about the hot new trend of pilsners and lagers.

A Podcast & A Beer – Heaven’s Gate

So my wife and I are on a bit of a cult kick. We binge watched Wild, Wild Country about the Bhagwhan Shree Rajneesh and his fitful years in Central Oregon and we also blitzed through this multi-part series about the Heaven’s Gate cult.

The podcast host is Glenn Washington and he has a wonderful radio voice. Deep and expressive and he leads us through a weird, weird story of how a group of UFO fans and disconnected and discontented people ended up killing themselves in an effort to board a spaceship that was hiding in the Hale-Bopp comet.

Wherever you fall on the spectrum of brainwashing and whether the leaders then one leader really was lying to them or believed his mission, you will end up having conversations about it and why people felt the need to join in the first place.

To drink with it, the obvious choice would be the UFO series of beers from Harpoon Brewery. But if you can’t find that on-point suggestion then Heavenly Hefeweizen from Pasadena’s Craftsman Brewery would be appropriate. As a final suggestion, you could also go for any San Diego beer since the group spent their final days in a rented mansion in San Diego county.

A Beer & A Podcast – The Hero’s Journey

I am an intermittent podcast listener but I have my favorites in both beer and non-beer topics so in the spirit of A Book & A Beer posts, I am going to do the occasional podcast recommendation. With beers too, of course.

My initial podcast is The Hero’s Journey. I am biased since I work with one half of the team that is using the Joseph Campbell template of The Hero and applying it to modern works of fiction and movies. From Harry Potter to John McClane, they track how these characters fit or don’t fit that classic mode. Plus they have a beverage break in each episode.

Which is where the beer recommendation comes in. Spoiler alert for episode 1, they drink San Fernando Imperial Death Star Stout and I would add that you could also add in the new Wookus from Firestone Walker as well.

Year of Podcasts – Good Beer Hunting

Capture
57 interviews with beer people are up (as of this writing) on the Good Beer Hunting podcast page. And it is an impressive roster. Garrett Oliver of Brooklyn Brewing, Patrick Rue of the Bruery and Randy Mosher as well.

I picked the latest episode to listen to.  Primarily because the interview subject was Jeff Gill from Tallgrass Brewing in Manhattan, Kansas.  I have had their canned beers at Canfest in Reno and really enjoyed their beers.  Secondly, the focus on the business side (primarily marketing) is of great interest.

The questions from blogger/host Michael Kiser were incisive but also folksy.  Maybe it is something in the water that makes Chicago people good interviewers. He has a good knowledge base that shows through without being snobby.  Though it breaks my rule about keeping it short, each episode that I listened to didn’t seem long.  I also like podcasts where there is laughter that doesn’t seem to come from inside humor.

I would suggest looking for breweries that you don’t know about and pick that interview to learn more about a place you haven’t been to.

In Thirst Returnum indeed!

Year of Podcasts -1 Beer 1 Song

Now this is what I’m talking about. Two dudes in Georgia with humor with a cool concept.  One Beer – One Song.

They attempt to focus on one beer and pair it with one song. Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin with comedy from Jake Johannsen or an IPA with Florence + the Machines. image

It is fun and fast and you get to hear the opinions of people and not just random nattering. They have compared vise to gueuze.  Hop Hunter vs. Lagunitas and more and you get some music to listen to while you sip your beer.

Year of Podcasts – Beer Paper LA

Screen Shot 2015-02-23 at 7.58.12 PM

Full Disclosure – I write (on occasion) for the print edition of Beer Paper LA and I might even be heard in a future podcast.  That being said, this is a perfect pairing with the paper and with an LA beer.  Now there is only a podcast, singular, but in talking with Kip Barnes about it, they are trying to make this podcast different from the rest and highly local.  And to make it easy to listen to time-wise.

Check out the first episode and get your bonus Beer Paper LA content.
