A Podcast & A Beer – Heaven Bent

Heaven Bent is a strange short little podcast. Comprising of only a handful of episodes, our narrator, Tara Jean Stevens charts a course that touches on a strange evangelical revival that turned into a worldwide phenomenon while also bringing her personal story into play that details her involvement through her church. I would have preferred to hear more about how a church near an airport in Toronto was ground zero for this “blessing” but I can see how others may prefer her journey more.

Since L.A. doesn’t get a lot of Toronto beer (or Canadian Prime Ministers visiting) you can always go for the Belgian beers that they get from Unibroue that coincidentally have religious sounding names like Providential or Audaciter. You could also get a crowler or other to-go option from SoCal’s Congregation Ale House.

Brew Club Podcast

There is a lot of good podcast content out there. I should know, I highlight one each month. Relatively sparse are the beer podcasts that are not dominated by dudes. But I saw mention of one that should be of special interest to us in SoCal…

I listened to the first two podcasts and they sound new to podcasting but they have a genuine rapport and when they start to talk about what they are passionate about, you can see where this could head. Plus, it is just good to hear different voices talking about beer. There are times when I feel stuck in my own bubble. Partially due to keeping my bubble restricted. So it is good to use a podcast to think about beer from a way different point of view.

A Podcast & A Beer – Forgotten Stories of Football

With the Bundesliga playing in front of empty stadiums and the Premier League and La Liga warming up on the horizon it is time to delve into sports history, and the Forgotten Stories of Football from the Guardian leans into some hidden until now niches of football.

These are some deep cuts too. Backstory from a match between Man United and Galatasary. A two parter on a famous referee and how polio fears were overcome with the death of a fullback.

Very interesting and well read and paced.

Two pair with the tales, order up some Yorkshire Square or MacLeod ale and have yourself a proper pint of bitter or ESB.

A Podcast & A Beer – Decoding Westworld

There is a cottage industry in explaining HBO’s Westworld, ever since the time shifty happenings in season 1. And the Decoding Westworld Podcast is part of it.

Why I picked this one out of the choices available is that hosts Joanna Robinson and David Chen were able to harness their fans to help fund their latest set of recaps. That is no small feat when crowdfunding has mostly faded from view. And from the little that I have heard so far, it is because they seem to be thoughtful fans of the show not one of these modern show haters.

I don’t think there are any beers named after Dolores, or the Man in Black and on the show it seems to be the hard stuff that is consumed more but I have some ideas for you which in this day and age of beer shopping might be more easily available.

My favorite episode so far was Absence of Field so look for Fieldwork Brewing beers. Or pick something based on what your favorite “world” has been on the show or should be. Perhaps Chicago during prohibition or England in Dickens times. Shogun world might call for something from Coedo or Baird Brewing.

Or, to prove that you have free will, you could just pick a random beer.

A Podcast & A Beer – Gangster Capitalism

Staying at home has decreased my car time to listen to podcasts but here is one to try this month that is on my radar, Gangster Capitalism. The NRA is bound together with politics. I thought that nothing could tear that asunder, not even Ronald Reagan, paragon of Republicans, getting shot or children, whom Republicans claim to care about the life of, getting shot. But as this podcast has started to explain, there is something that can break that pairing up. Money.

No, this is not going to be a light-hearted romp or feel good story but I have the feeling I will learn some disturbing facts instead.

Since, I am firmly in the no gun camp, I am not going to go looking for clever hunting named beers. Instead, for beer pairing, I want you to look for breweries that have their own political agenda and have one of their beers. Eagle Rock Brewery here in L.A. is working to stop frivolous lawsuits since they were extortioned by one. Modern Times is very progressive on social issues. Or perhaps have something from Long Beach Beer Lab who are helping hospitals in their part of town since big business and government haven’t filled that gap. Be a Craft Beer SuperPAC.

A Podcast & A Beer – Dead Eyes

Anyone who has had someone chosen before them, will be able to relate to Dead Eyes, a new podcast that combines humor with great guests to a dissection of an event that happened 20 years ago.

You get cast in Band of Brothers but then Tom Hanks has second thoughts and suddenly, you are not in it anymore, not even in the tiny role you booked. All because of Dead Eyes.

Actors will really feel for the guy but everyone will be able to relate to the tale of woe that is now a defining part of Connor Ratliff’s life.

To pair with this podcast, I would pick beers with Brothers in the name likeWidmer Bros. or Two Brothers. Perhaps looks for beers with Band in the name, like Jam Band from Boulevard or Critical Band from Modern Times or to cover bases pick up Hollywood Acid from Brouwerij West.

A Podcast & A Beer – The City / Reno

Instead of worrying about gentrification, maybe you should take a listen to this podcast from USA Today, The City. Season 2 heads to Reno, Nevada.

This is a depressing series of podcasts. Strippers without authority or agency. Low income people with nowhere to go. Strip club operators and politicians saying one thing but meaning another. All packed into Reno, Nevada. Throw in Tesla and dangerous warehouse jobs and you got a cauldron of issues to work out.

I was kinda surprised that this was a USA Today production. But it seems like newspapers can find the good topics for podcasts. The reporting is well done and covers all the angles and you are left with basically wishing that someone would build some damn low-income units for people and put them less than an hour away from food pantries.

And though I am not a fan of their label art, you kinda have to start your beer pairing choices with Reno AF from Revision Brewing. Then grab Lunar Kitten IPA from Los Angeles Ale Works since they are near SpaceX, another Elon Musk company. Then I would strongly suggest finding a beer label that doesn’t depict women as just sex objects. You will hear too much about that objectification in the podcast.

Unruffled

Henhouse Brewing has started up a new podcast which is two (maybe now three) episodes in. It is a blend of beer talk, upcoming events and information on all things Henhouse. A useful tool if you are planning to visit their taproom.

A Podcast & A Beer – Binge Mode: Star Wars

If you want to go deep into the Star Wars universe after seeing Rise of Skywalker, then Binge Mode: Star Wars will give you all the info you desire.

From the horrible prequels to the stand-alone films, to the original trilogy and finally, the final three movies of the Skywalker Saga. The laughter is infectious and even though I didn’t like some of the movies as much as they did, it does bring back some of the childhood vitality that I remember from A New Hope that has been somewhat lost in subsequent films where money seemed a little more important. Which thankfully was found in time for Rise of Skywalker, my favorite of the new trilogy.

There are so many star systems and so many themes that can be chosen for beers to drink alongside this podcast and there bad Star Wars named beers aplenty. But I would suggest that you alternate from blonde ales (the light side) to dark lagers (the Sith way) because these podcasts are long and you will need session beers otherwise you might not make it to the end where they reveal the hero of each movie.

A Podcast & A Beer – The Battle of 187

I know next year will be really political and I will climb into a sound proof booth until November but I am a fan of Gustavo Arrelano who writes about food and politics with equal aplomb so I tuned in to his 3-part podcast about the infamous Proposition 187.

It is a three-part series with a kicker at the end where former Governor Pete Brown states his side of the issue.

To pair with this, you could go for a local Mexican lager or for the classic Dos Equis but if you are in SoCal, I would suggest plugging your podcast into the car and taking a drive to Pico River and the newly opened Brewjeria Company and have some of their beers.

Why? Because they show why inclusion is better than exclusion just in how they chose their name – ” The term Brewjeria is a ‘Spanglish’ word combining the English word “Brew” with the suffix of the Spanish word “Brujeria”, which means witchcraft. We feel that this captures some of the essence of what it is to live in Southern California. Brewjeria is the swirling chemistry of ideas, language, culture, science and spirituality intertwined in wonder and community.”
