Winter (and Beer) is Coming

I will admit that I get geeky when it comes to my favorite TV shows, movies and books. I am still harboring resentment to George Lucas about the damn prequels he made. But I will watch Doctor Who and Fringe and any Bond movie because I love the mythology around the characters no matter the crazy situation.

Now Game of Thrones is a different beast. I came to this show/books after Lord of the Rings so I watch/read with that filter in place and I am just not into it like everyone else is if Top 10 Lists of TV are to be fully believed.

That being said, if Ommegang is doing the beers then I am in to trying them. I will probably not hoist them while watching the show though.

Beer on the TV

The trend of craft beer on the TV continues. Here is another show that I heard about from a friend of the BSP.

“Who doesn’t like craft beer? Well, the folks at New York-based indie production company Overcrest Media are betting you do. Last month they launched their first original series, The Brewery Show, which dives into the craft beer movement, one microbrewery at a time.

“We explore the greatest microbreweries, brewpubs, and craft beer houses this country has to offer. From interviews with the trendiest brewmasters, owners, technicians, and home brewers, we find out what’s brewing in the world of craft beer and beyond,” says the series’ fledgling YouTube page.

For the uninitiated, The Brewery Show provides an excellent introduction to the process and philosophy behind craft beer production. And for those well versed, it provides a thorough behind-the-scenes look at some of the East Coast’s top artisinal breweries.

The first episode takes us to Pleasantville, NY’s Captain Lawrence Brewing Company—famous for their ‘Liquid Gold’ brew—and features interviews with Owner and Head Brewer Scott Vaccaro and Cellar Operator Justin Sturges. Vaccaro offers a piece of advice you homebrewers won’t want to hear: “I’m the last person to tell you not to follow your dreams, but remember it’s a business first, and it’s not just about making beer.”

Following episodes take us to Keegan Ales, Brewery Ommegang, Thomas Hooker Brewing Company, Cavalry Brewing, and Sixpoint. Thirsty yet? New episodes are released every two weeks.”

Gnomes in New York

“This delectable blonde ale is a co-creation of two famed farmstead breweries: Brewery Ommegang and Brasserie d’Achouffe. It employs five fine malts, two noble hops, and both of the distinctive Chouffe and Ommegang yeasts. You’ll enjoy the smooth drinkability, fruity aromas and flavors, and warming finish.”

Good to see that the cross pollination of Duvel, d’Achoufee and Ommegang is continuing. It will only make for better beer. And who doesn’t like that little red-nosed gnome?

New from Ommegang

That Belgian outpost in New York has a new Scottish inspired beer coming our way…

Pretty cool label outside. What’s inside, you ask? “This fine Ommegang ale uses heather tips and a wee bit of smoked malt to bring the taste and aroma of Scotland to the forefront.”

The name comes from a Scottish poem by Robert Burns, “An wil tak a cup o kyndnes yet, fir ald land syn.”

Tripel Perfection

The Belgian beer keeps coming from the Cooperstown folks at Ommegang. I have been hearing about their new BPA for a couple of weeks but since I have a fellow beer geek whose first choice is always a tripel then the release of the Tripel Perfection is even better news.

This beer is three years in the making and clocks in at 8.9% alcohol. So it is not for the weak.

Beer America TV

Follow that link and you will find a review of a beer that I had at my first beer tasting event for the Beer Search Party. This beer sharply divided my guests and is not one of my favorites either.

I also just received my very cool Beer America TV shirt. Thanks guys!
