Mikkeller + 3 Floyds x 3 =

3f-RugGoop-22-labl-1p-1024x728

While Mikkeller the nomad brewer was in Chicago for the Craft Brewers Conference, he apparently made another side trip to Munster, Indiana to make another collaboration brew with Three Floyds. The unpronounceable Ruggoop is a 10% ABV “Rye Wine.”

These two eccentric and much loved and followed breweries have been down this road before. Weird names, weirder labels and even weirder styles. Hvedegoop – a hoppy wheatwine was the first collaboration. Second came Oatgoop. That beer was a wheatwine brewed with oats.

Maybe next up will be a brett wine.

Mikkeller single hops!

A few months back, I warned that more Mikkeller single hop ales were on the way. Now that I have just sampled the Mikkeller 10. From the initial 10 single hop beers it is about time for the next set to start.

Personally, the two that I am looking forward to the most are Citra and Sorachi Ace.

Bravo is my 3rd in line.

Followed by Apollo and Summit…

So now I need East Kent Goldings and these new five to complete the series.

What about you? Which of these five are you looking forward to?

Single Hop craze

Mikkeller started the trend (as far as I can tell) and now others are jumping on the bandwagon. There are citra hop IPA’s hitting the market from breweries like Kern River and now two other notable breweries are getting in on the action.

Bear Republic has the awesome Apex amongst other great IPA’s but the new one that caught my attention was…
Rebellion™
American IPA
ABV: 6.0% IBU: varies
Rebellion is a single hop pale ale brewed to showcase different hop varietals. Always brewed with the same malt base and IBUs, the character of the hop really shines through.

Then Terminal Gravity in tiny Enterprise, Oregon comes out with single hop DIPA’s! Using the “C” hops of Centennial, Chinook and Columbus.

Most of these are draft only so search for them.

Mikkeller Beer Bar

I do not know how a person can brew across the world and have another job and now provide enough beer for bar dedicated to his excellent concoctions. Mikkel must work 27 hours a day. I am glad he does though.

“The grand opening of the Mikkeller beer bar in Viktoriagade 8BC, Vesterbro, Copenhagen will take place on wednesday May 5th at 17:00.
The opening will feature a huge number of new beers from Mikkeller and beers from the best brewers in Europe and the US. The opening events will go on and new beers will be tapped from May 5th-May 8th.”

Mikkeller – Educational beers

As is usual with me, I learn something new every day. Today’s nugget is that the nomadic Mikkeller is working on a third series of single ingredient beers.

I said to myself, “3?” Apparently, I completely missed the barrel series that showcased one beer in different barrels to see the effects from what was liquor was previously in that barrel. Hopefully, I can get a bottle of one of those and review it here.

Second, is the single hop series that I blather on about from time to time because it is such a great idea and each beer is fantastic in a non-educational setting. New single hop beers on the horizon include Summit, Apollo, Bravo, Citra and Sorachi Ace. I am especially geeked out about the last two.

Here is the list of single hop beers already out:
Amarillo
Cascade
Centennial
Chinook
East Kent Golding
Nelson Sauvin
Nugget
Simcoe
Tomahawk
Warrior

The third lesson is on yeast! Now this should be really fascinating. The same base beer is being used but with these different strains of yeast: lager, U.S. ale, Belgian Ale/Trappist, Weiss and Brettanomyces.

news from Mikkeller

While the beer geeks were slobbering over the news of a 1K IBU beer coming in February, I was more interested in two other notes…

# 1
“2009 was also the year where Mikkeller got his line of Single Hop on the move. After the first single hop, Simcoe, more followed, and last month came Tomahawk and Amarillo which was the 6th. and 7th. Early next year, 2010, an additional three new single hop beers will hit the market and at the same time new batches of the previous 7. This way you will be able to visit your local beer-pusher and buy 10 different Single Hops at the same time. With 10 different Single Hops in the fridge, all you need is a bag of peanuts to save the evening.”
I love the Mikkeller Single Hops and the fact that more are coming is beyond awesome.

# 2
“Mikkeller has planed more travels abroad in 2010. One of these travels will go to Greece to brew a beer with the greek micro-brewery Craft. And a couple of journeys to the US can not be excluded. Whether this will result in yet a new beer brewed with Three Floyds, or Mikkeller will brew with a different brewery is to early to say. Another cooperation with a European brewery is in the plan for 2010 also.”

3 Floyds + Mikkeller. That will be a beer to hoard for sure.
