Beets Me

SpontanbeetrootFront

I have had only one of the “Spontan” series from Mikkeller.  And though I enjoyed The Wild Strawberry, I have to say that I wasn’t thinking to myself.  I sure wish he would do a beet version.  That’s not what I have a hankering for.  But I guess you can tell from the RateBeer list of Mikkeller beers that he has done pretty much the gamut of fruits so maybe now he will work through the vegetables.

Yeast + Mikkeller

Mikkeller is going back to yeast school for us. I have expounded often on my love of the single hop series of beers as well as the single barrel series. I have not, as of yet, had any of the yeast series that was done. But apparently Round 2 is coming.

One basic recipe that stays the same but the yeast changes from saison to lager to English pale to American Pale to two Brett strains. And even the label is cool.

19

Mikkeller has somehow jammed 19 different hop varietals into one beer. Aptly named 19. For the lupulin curious, here is the list with (rounded off) percentages for each of the hops.
Simcoe – 17%
Citra – 15%
Amarillo – 14%
Sorachi Ace – 10
Bravo – 6%
Columbus – 6%
Cluster – 4%
Warrior – 4%
Cascade – 3%
Centennial – 3%
Palisade – 2%
Challenger, Galena, Magnum, Mt. Hood, Tettnanger – 1%
Nugget, Super Galena and Willamette – below 1%

Hop Burn

Mikkeller (as usual) has been busy. They have a new IPA out on the market….
with the odd moniker of a Double Imperial pale ale.

More importantly, according to the interwebs, Mikkeller might do some of his brewing right here in California at Drake’s facility. That would be a boon to us in terms of availability and freshness because I know that some of his beers probably suffered taste-wise on the voyage from Europe to my ‘fridge.

Odd Label Art – March Edition

I am a HUGE fan of the Mikkeller Single Hop beers. Don’t believe me? Type Mikkeller into the search box to the left and find out.

But I gotta say that these new labels are not an improvement. The old ones were boring but in line with other Mikkeller beers. These just look a little too computer cute to me. I will still drink them, of course, but it certainly is an odd graphic choice.

What do you think?

Mikkeller dessert beer

How many times have you wished for a beer that had the same flavor profile as the Danish dessert risalamande?

OK, I’m just trying to hide the fact that I am again posting about Mikkeller and a new beer. It is getting old but no less fun

First, here is the risalamande….”Risalamande (or “ris a la mande”) is a delicious, traditional Danish rice dessert based on rice, cream, and almonds served with hot cherry sauce. Risalamande is typically enjoyed at Christmas time, but is recommended for dessert lovers all year through.”

Now here is the beer inspired by it…..

Apparently, all the pastry ingredients went into the beer. Is it good? Have you had it? I would love to hear reviews.

Mikkeller + Nelson Sauvin + wine barrels =

Ardent followers of these posts will know that Mikkeller graces these pages at least once a month and that one of my favorite beers of the past couple years was the Mikkeller Single Hop Ale made from Nelson Sauvin hops.

To celebrate the last new year, Mikkeller brewed Nelson Sauvignon. Again using Nelson hops and aging the new creation in white wine barrels. It never made it stateside.

But here is the good news. The newest iteration Nelson Sauvin Brut will arrive in the US next year. It is the champagne inspired version.

Coffee + IPA = Mikkeller

File this under, might work. Two distinct flavors that may fight each other to a standstill. The coffee is called Guji Natural and is roasted by a by Koppi of Sweden. The hops in the other corner are Tomahawk. And it was brewed at Mikkeller’s default brewery De Proef.
