Triple Tiki

The triple IPA deluge is continuing with a Thor Heyerdahl entrant from Los Angeles Ale Works, Kon Tiki.

“We took a different approach with this beer, using our hazy IPA yeast before spinning through the centrifuge. This preserves the complex, yeast-driven tropical aromas while keeping the body closer to more traditional IPAs.  On the nose, Kon Tiki has loads of pineapple and mango, followed by subtle sweet notes of passionfruit, mango and ripe citrus.”

1st Visit – Los Angeles Ale Works at Ivy Station

When I was in Portland, I visited a coffee shop that was next door to a bottle shop which was part of an apartment complex. It made me wonder what it would be like to have that availibility so close.

If you live at the Ivy Station in Culver City you now have an outpost of Los Angeles Ale Works an elevator ride away.

Yesterday, I was able to step inside for the first time. The color scheme is great, warm blues with wooden slats plus blue speckled countertops. The space is rectangular and a bit smaller than I expected with a corridor of outside seating facing the Metro.

I liked the little touches on the chairs….

…and the beer list was full. No lack of choices…

…this a great addition to what is becoming a Metro beer crawl with Santa Monica Brew Works to the west and Party Beer to the east. Dodger and Angel City FC fans will have a great place to pre-game as well.

Cold Sabro

And not just Sabro featured in the new beer from Los Angeles Ale Works, Hopped Out Cold Cold IPA

“Crisp, clean and crystal clear. You won’t find any malty sweetness distracting you from the real showcase here – the hops. Sabro, Mosaic and Citra play off one another with a restrained bitterness and refreshingly balanced notes of dank pine, coconut, black current and lemon.”

Wooden L.A.A.W.

Los Angeles Ale Works will arrive at their five year celebration this year and have events starting the 17th all the way through the 29th with the signature event being on…

March 19th – “THE BASH. 5 years is the celebration of wood and we’ll have lots to celebrate. Beer and glass releases, merchandise, food, music, expect the usual fun and festivities of past anniversaries!”

Three L.A.A.W.s

Ivy Station, the second location for Los Angeles Ale Works is still in the “works” and now the Hawthorne brewery that is celebrating five years has announced their intention to take over the Boyle Heights location where Indie Brewing recently left.

The former Indie space has a good sized footprint, plus there is a nice courtyard that might be put to use (permits permitting). It could use a bit of sprucing up and a better entrance to the taproom but the bones are there. And with the 6th Street bridge/viaduct opening mid this year and large park nearby, this could be a real smart play.

Hopefully they can brew a beer in homage to the previous brewery to keep a connection to the history of the L.A. beer scene.

Not That Westy

Double Westy (West Coast DIPA, 9.0%) is easily one of the cleanest, hop forward doubles we’ve brewed. Mosaic, Nelson, Citra and a sprinkling of Sabro come together with notes of cantaloupe, resin, stone fruit and some serious hoppy dankness. Available in cans and on draft THURSDAY.

Featured Beer Review – LA – In the Fronds Tropical IPA from Los Angeles Ale Works

I really like the plant shop vibe from this Los Angeles Ale Works can label. The shimmery silver and the greens are popping. Plus the name is spot on for a tropically tinged beer.

This beer is bursting with pineapple. I cracked the can and it was rushing with that distinctive aroma. That pineapple follows through into the taste but interestingly there is a significant hop bite here. Very West Coast IPA in temperament. It is a super light yellow color though. Contradictions aplenty but it is a really fine IPA.
