SoCal to the World

My Facebook and Twitter feed was hijacked yesterday by loads of good news from the World Beer Cup which was a bonus add on to the Craft Brewers Conference in Philadelphia which already was making me social media jealous.

Beachwood picked up a prestigious Large Brewpub of the Year win and Noble Ale Works racked up an overall win in the Small Brewery category.  Overall California brought in 39 (if my counting is right this early in the morning) medals with Eagle Rock going gold for their Yearling sour, Beachwood and Noble should have had chairs on stage, TAPS pulled in multiple medals continuing their impressive string since the new brewing team took over, Tustin and Smog City with their shared past will share memories of winning too with a bronze and silver respectively.

You can check the full list HERE. But it is impressive considering this competition was open to the world.  But a microcosm of the current beer culture could be found in the Sour German category where  Oregon and California nabbed the one and two slots with a German brewery coming in third!

The Golden State brewers were warriors last night.  Steph Curry and Klay Thompson have nothing on the brewing splash that SoCal made in Philly.

Take a Trip

untitled
Break out your backpacks and hashtags, Eagle Rock Brewery has teamed up with the National Forest Foundation to brew up some canned beers to take with you out into the Great Outdoors (for me it is the Great Indoors). Plus, as a bonus, portion of the proceeds of all sales will be donated to the National Forest Foundation.

The cans will be released into the wild tomorrow, 4/28 in time for you to hike or climb or (for me go out on the patio) and enjoy the #ERBdaytrip.

Eagle Rock Session Fest 2016 – The Photos & Favorites

Last Sunday, Eagle Rockbrought together an eclectic group of brewers all with the task of brewing low ABV beers. The rain from previous days might have scared people away but it was bright & sunny and the beers were flowing with special guests like Mark Jilg of Craftsman, Mumford, MacLeod, photographer to the beer starts Bernie Wire and others. I will tell you my favorites but first some photos from the day….

I started the afternoon with a milk stout from Eagle Rock which was quite roasty but not as sweet as expected. After an exchange of pleasantries with Mark Jilg, I sampled his Craftsman Get Off My Lawn IPA which was a bit cloudy and more of a pale but a nice change in IPA flavor. Next came my favorite the HenHouse oyster stout which had a really nice savory note and a touch of saline. That was followed by the Eagle Rock Baja Weisse which was like a margarita beer. All fruity and light and probably my close second favorite. I also tasted a brown ale from Sanctum which was fine but nothing really leaped out from it and then finished the afternoon with the Saisonetta from Arts District. That beer was better than my recent tastes of ADBC beers which is a positive sign.

Session Fest 2016

Capture
Ready to get your Session on?

In the early years of Session Fest, it was just Eagle Rock pumping out a crazy amount of weird lighter ABV beers. Last year’s Betelguse beer made with bugs being a good example. But this year, the field is wide open with Bagby and Ladyface and even the Public House location of ERB in on the action. Plus many others.

Photos and beer favorites to follow but I hope you are there too!

6 Years of Darts Away

Capture
Break out your hashtags and tastes for hops when Tony’s Dart Away goes all #TDA6th starting tomorrow and going through the weekend.

There will be the near ritualistic hourly tappings (between 10am-7pm) of special & rare California-brewed beers + the return of a brand new* Darts Away IPA that you can get in a commemorative pint glass for sale for $10 (which includes a pour of the anniversary hop bomb)!

For those Sour Cottontails out there, Sunday will be “Sour Easter” with each hour bringing a new sour.

*For those who didn’t want to drink an SABInBevMiller IPA, do not fear. Eagle Rock Brewery has stepped up to brew the Tony’s IPA this year.

Review – Two 6th Anniversaries

Happy Anniversary to Eagle Rock Brewery. It is hard to imagine that I have been to 6 parties to celebrate another year of beer from my closest brewer.

ERB shares a birthday with Ladyface (who had their own party going on in Agoura Hills) and the pair both brewed up a Belgian Golden Strong Ale for the day and you could tell both were related but they each had different notes to them.

By a slight margin, I would take the Zes from Eagle Rock over the version from Ladyface, which I thought was a touch too sour and a little heavier on the palate.

What the future holds will be fun to watch unspool. I never would of thought that ERB would have a restaurant even just 2 years ago but now they are a mutli-location spot and growing.

ERB at CBC

If you have not found the time in the new year to visit the now open Craft Beer Cellar in Eagle Rock, well, I have an excuse for you….

“On Saturday, January 9th from 4-8p we’re hosting our first of many Second Saturday Sessions and to kick the year off right who better than Eagle Rock Brewery to take over our tap room! The Eagle Rock crew will be in the house and some awesome beer will be pouring from the taps, like Manifesto, their Witbier style beer, Stimulus, their Belgian-style Amber with Intelligentsia Coffee, and a bunch of their delicious core lineup. As if that wasn’t enough, Eagle Rock Brewery Public House will also be offering some of the delicious munchies! All Eagle Rock Brewery Beer bottles to-go will be offered on sale with 10% off!”

And if you read that whole paragraph, the other easter egg is the fact that the Public House will be providing some foodie treats. Great way to kill two beer birds with one visit.
