Food GPS Teaser – What has happened at #LABW5 and What Will

Screen shot 2013-09-07 at 8.04.35 AM

Food GPS tomorrow will reveal what I thought about some of the events so far this week.  (And add some events to see in the remaining days as well).  I thought I would use this space to review the L.A. Beer Week beer, Unity 2013 with honey and hibiscus from Eagle Rock Brewery.

Unity 2013 pours with a lovely red tint to it.  I get a slight aroma of hibiscus on the nose as I tip the bottle towards me.  The taste is very light on the tongue.  I get mostly wheat and malt at first followed by a good amount of hibiscus.  But not so much that it takes over which hibiscus is wont to do.  There is some residual sweetness to it but the bubbles really do their work and scrub it away before anything cloying happens.  A really nice beer for the late summer / early fall heat wave that L.A. is fond of having.

#LABW5 Pick of the Night – Thursday 9/19

Screen shot 2013-09-07 at 8.04.35 AM

Each morning throught L.A. Beer Week, I will give you my Pick of the Night.  The ONE event I think rises to the top of the list.  Some days that choice will be harder and there might be 1A and 1B’s (if I get wishy-washy).  I will endeavor to pick events you can just head out to.  But if tickets are required, I will mention it.  But expect crowds.  Craft beer and craft beer in L.A. is popular.

For the first day, head to…..

Eagle Rock Brewing’s The Right Brews (Cask X Nitro X CO2) at Story Tavern

What better way to start the party than with Eagle Rock Brewing.

What’s an Adjunct?

logo

Wanna get some book learnin’?  Well then sign up for this class at Eagle Rock!  And you can find out why adjuncts (when used correctly) can bring a whole new side to beer.  And Jon will have all sorts of knowledge to drop on you.

“Beer School is in session! This month’s class is all about Adjuncts. Come learn all about this funny/fancy word for the “stuff that you add to beer outside of the 4 main ingredients (water, malt, hops & yeast)” from Jon Carpenter (you might know him from his time at Dogfish Head, Golden Road or now Alchemy and Science). All that experience has lead him to brew many different styles of beers with every ingredient under the rainbow. Find out what adjuncts work well for beer and what additions are a totally bust. Taste, learn and enjoy this highly knowledge friend of Eagle Rock Brewery who’s excited to share what he knows and is a rare person to sit down with in this industry.
The class will take place in the Eagle Rock Brewery taproom on Tuesday 7/20/13 from 7pm to 9pm. As usual, the taproom will be open at 6p for those registered in the class to come in to pickup the course materials and enjoy a pre-class beer. Cost will be $30 per person.”

One of my favorite events on the Los Angeles beer calendar is the Session Fest at Eagle Rock Brewery.  And it is back in it’s 3rd iteration!  From 4pm to 10pm on May 4th.  Here is the news feed from their website…..

“Session Fest is all about great tasting beers that don’t get you blitzed. All your favorite brewery staff will be brewing up some special session-style beers to share with you. We’re currently mashing, hopping, fermenting and working our butts off to ensure some deliciousness not to be missed!

This year for just $15 you’ll be able to get 3 beers and a half pint commemorative Session Fest pint glass to take home with you!

Additional drink tickets will be available to purchase as well.

We’ll have a food truck in the lot also and we’ll let you know who once we have it all worked out.”

Christmas in Eagle Rock

Your L.A. Christmas needs are ironically met at Eagle Rock Brewery where you can wear an ugly sweater and toss some fruitcakes

We start on December 20, 2012 from 4pm to 9pm

“You’ve got it and we want to see it! Get dolled up in your finest….. fugly sweater that is!
We want to see large Santa faces, glitter, bells, lights, multi-colored yarn, pom-poms…. the WORKS. Also welcome is any kind of talented creativeness that in some way resembles our product/crew.”

Judging will go down around 8:30pm so be sure to get here and get fancy before then. Winner will receive a fabulous prize and full fugly bragging rights.

Then on December 27, 2012 from 7pm to 9pm

“Did the holiday season approach and along with it some delicious (ahem, gross) fruit cake? Well we’ve got the BEST solution for you.

1st ANNUAL Fruit CAKE TOSS! BYOB fruit cake and see how far you can toss it into our parking lot. Furthest toss wins a prize and of course FULL bragging rights.

It’s seriously a win even if you don’t toss it the furthest since you get rid of that nasty fruit cake and all your holiday aggression. Haha. We’re always here to help you out. Oh, and there’s always beer here too.

Tossing will begin approximately 7pm so be sure to be here and be ready. Remember….fruit cake not provided so be sure to bring one with!”

Prickly Pear Beer Review – Unity 2012

I helped “unwrap” prickly pears on the brew day and then I helped on bottling day as the finished beer filled up bottle after bottle so I am a bit biased about this year’s Unity beer from Eagle Rock Brewery.

And it lived up to it! You get a bright prickly pear flavor right off the bat. The beer then settles into some other exotic fruit notes before finishing with a real cereal grain end. And it is just tart enough and effervescent to really add another layer to a really low ABV beer. This one is under 4%. The only flavor that I didn’t get on the palate was the rye. Maybe it was working in other ways, but I did not pick up much spice but that is a minor quibble with a really strong Berliner Weisse.

FoodGPS Teaser – Unity 2012

Tomorrow on FoodGPS, you will get the rundown on the Unity 2012 brew and some history of the Berliner Weisse style but to whet your appetite, here are some photos from Day 2 of the brewing process for the Prickly Pear Rye Berliner…..

These are really prickly, little slivers easily work their way into fingers as you try to cut them.

The cutting crew digging into the pears that will get bagged and dropped into the brew later.

The “souring” grains coming out of the wort.

The measuring of the teeny tiny amount of hops going into the beer.

Something’s Off

On August 7th you can taste some bad beer for a good cause. That cause? BEER EDUCATION:

“WHAT HAPPENED? OFF FLAVORS TASTING

You’ve likely heard terms such as diacetyl, acetaldehyde, DMS, and so forth in the context of beer flaws and off-flavors, but what do they really taste like? Join us Tuesday, August 7th from 7-9pm for the second in a series of sensory analysis sessions to find out.

We’ll conduct a tasting of ‘doctored’ beers, each highlighting a specific flaw. Prepare to savor such flavors as cardboard, green apple, creamed corn, and if you’re lucky maybe even a little baby diaper! This is a great opportunity, particularly for newer brewers, to learn to identify beer flaws and troubleshoot their process. If you have any beers that didn’t turn out as you’d planned, bring them along!

In order to prepare course materials, have enough sample beer, etc. everyone attending the class must be registered via online store. There are only 25 spots available so it will fill up fast!”
