Haunted

capture
Most breweries are, lets face it, will not wind up in architecture magazines. Unless it is “Inudstrial Park Chic”. But Pomona based Alosta Brewing has done the next best thing. And it is a cool beer meets Halloween event minus pumpkins.

They are releasing their new DIPA “Second Empire.” Second Empire is a style of architecture which is embodied in Disney’s haunted mansion. But there is another example, the Philips Mansion in Pomona conveniently located next to a cemetary.

The DIPA houses a blend of Citra, Amarillo, Apollo, and Cascade hops at a striking 76 IBU’s.

The brewery has partnered with the Pomona Historical Society for a special bottle release event.

Here are the details from the website: “Pre-order your bottle(s) of “Second Empire” and then come by the mansion on Friday, Oct. 14th between 7:30-10pm and not only pick up your order, but enjoy a sample or two. Best of all, you will be able to take a nighttime tour of the mansion itself. A portion of every bottle we sell will be donated to the Pomona Historical Society to help in their effort of restoring the Philips Mansion for future generations to enjoy.”

Pigeons of War

Drakes-War-Pigeon
I will make the assumption that pigeons have something to do with Drake and ships on the open sea and war. Mostly because I think the label is really cool and not only is quite stylistically apart from “normal” Drakes Brewing labels while also still being recognizably Drakes but also sports a cool font and a green/orange color scheme that works really well.

Oh, and they know a bit about hops up there so a DIPA is firmly in their wheelhouse.

Review – Nelson Showers from Noble Ale Works

IMG_7564

Unfortunately I missed the Citra version of Noble’s DIPA 2014 series.  Part of the peril of not chasing after every beer.  I just wasn’t in the right place at the right time.  But I grabbed a bottle of the second in the series at Sunset Beer Co..  It pours a light orange to the point of yellow.  There is a big aroma here.  Spice hits the nose first.  Cooking spice.  The taste has that same bold spice note that is subdued by a touch of fruit.  Mostly grape but that fades right back to spice.  Strong and delicious.

Happy 3rd Anniversary by the way!

The Perfect Storm

Oakshire Brewing Perfect Storm Double IPA is a great IPA name in my opinion and from the brewery description it sounds like a great bitter DIPA as well.

“Brewed in a single batch in May ’12, this ale shows gorgeous floral and citrus hops character – led by the amazing tangerine-intensive Zythos – with toasted nut bread, and figs from the warm malt profile.”

10th Anniversary of Ruination

Stone is not one to let an anniversary go by un-celebrated and the 10th year of Ruination is getting a special rendition of the popular BIG IPA.

A special label and amped up ABV along with what I assume will be plenty of hops will mark the occasion. I will be putting it on my to get list.

Two 5 Left and Primero Ano

Two 5 Left is a new Double IPA from El Segundo Brewing. Release date and anniversary is on 5/20. And you will notice that this label has a LAX motif in the middle as opposed to the more bucolic house and dog normally seen. A nod to the large airport to the north of the brewery.

Below is the information you will need to know to get your first taste of this anniversary brew and others on 1st anniversary day….

Review – Hangar 24 Double IPA

I purchased this bottle on Christmas eve and it tasted better than the tap! Hangar 24 is a rapidly growing brewery that is doing some great stuff and has a wonderful airport location. I have also been impressed by their Helles and on the other end of the spectrum, the big Pugachev’s Cobra Imperial Stout.
