Up From the Cellar – Christmas Ale from Anchor (2008-2009)

Up from the Cellar for December will be focusing on multiple vintages of the Anchor Christmas beer.  I will be covering the years 2008-2014. And choosing a winner like college football does.  Via a biased playoff.

(You can check out last years mega-review HERE)

2008 pours a near reddish color this year.  The first whiff upon popping the cap is of Oud Bruin and cherry but as the beer warms up that fades off like the head diminishes.  There is a decidedly fruit taste to this beer.  Fruit punch primarily.  Strawberry would be my next guess.  It doesn’t taste bad per se but it is certainly more fruitcake and dried fruit than anything else.

2009 has a more pleasing aroma to it.  Good start.  And it is so different from the ’08.  Cinnamon red hot flavor hits me first.  Never had that in a beer before.  That initial taste fades a skosh and the beer starts to taste better as it warms.  There is a nice rich, full taste to this with what seems to be a darker malt bill to it.

It is kinda hard to pick a winner to move on to the next round against the victor of 2010 vs. 2011.  The oldest and last bottle of the Our Special Ale had faded too much for me though it was offensive.  So I have to pick the 2009, though the spice profile makes it an underdog for the next round.

A Christmas ColLAboration

Who says L.A. can’t do Christmas? We may not have the biting cold, or frost, or snow and we may be able to walk around in shorts on Christmas Day but we can do the winter warmer.

Just in beer garden style, one week from today, thanks to the hardworking people behind ColLAboration. “This time around, the garden will feature a selection of winter and holiday brews (including 2 special releases from Golden Road), along with old favorites from: Golden Road Brewing, Eagle Rock Brewery, Cismontane, Hangar 24, Anchor Steam, Sierra Nevada, Eel River, Firestone Walker, Stone, Russian River, Lost Abbey, Dogfish Head, Oskar Blues, Avery, New Belgium, Bootleggers, TAPS, Bruery, Beachwood, Smog City and many more.”

Check out the details on the attached flyer below.

PLUS – Golden Road will be premiering two new beers from their Brewer’s Choice line!

Mikkeller dessert beer

How many times have you wished for a beer that had the same flavor profile as the Danish dessert risalamande?

OK, I’m just trying to hide the fact that I am again posting about Mikkeller and a new beer. It is getting old but no less fun

First, here is the risalamande….”Risalamande (or “ris a la mande”) is a delicious, traditional Danish rice dessert based on rice, cream, and almonds served with hot cherry sauce. Risalamande is typically enjoyed at Christmas time, but is recommended for dessert lovers all year through.”

Now here is the beer inspired by it…..

Apparently, all the pastry ingredients went into the beer. Is it good? Have you had it? I would love to hear reviews.

Christmas in May

In my travels this week, I came across a deal to good to pass up. A nice big bottle of St. Bernardus Christmas Ale on sale! $9.99 to be exact. So I snapped it up.

This doesn’t quite fill the winter warmer category but it does carry an alcohol punch to it. Surprisingly light and malty with a touch of spice to it. Personally, this would go great with turkey and cranberry and stuffing. But make sure to share it will catch up with you.
