Canned for Parks

anchor-california-lager

Anchor Brewing Company is putting it’s 4.9% California Lager into cans and “through two unique partnerships, a portion of proceeds from Anchor California Lager sales will support the National Parks Conservation Association.”

According to the press release heralding the new packaging, we her in Californiahave 280 state parks and 26 of America’s 401 national parks in which to get in touch with nature.

Beginning this month, Anchor California Lager “will also be available in 6-pack cans both nationally and year-round..”

I didn’t like that the Bock beer was stopped but between the lager and new saison and this initiative.  I think the new owners at Anchor are doing things right.

Java the Hop

from Fort George comes another hoppy can.

“SINGLE ORIGIN HOPS + SINGLE ORIGIN BEANS

Mornings are for coffee. Evenings are for beer. Java the Hop is timeless. Don’t let that glowing orange hue fool you. As you raise this pint to the nose there is absolutely no doubt what you are getting – a coffee IPA. Packed with the flavor of Coava Coffee Roaster’s Kochere, and a taste of chocolate, Java the Hop satisfies to the finish.”

Seems like the coffee beer train is too caffeinated to stop.

Let’s Pour Brewery # 3 – Intuition Ale Works

For Christmas, I received gift codes to the Let’s Pour craft beer website so that I could buy to my hearts content or the max amount that I was given (whichever came first) and one of the breweries that I purchased a beer from is Intuition Ale Works from Jacksonville, Florida.

lovely-package-intuition-beer1

As you can see from the photo, they can their regular line-up of beers.  If I had seen the pale and coastal ale, I probably would have gotten those too to get the full flavor of this brewery helmed by brewer Ben Davis.

And if I was standing at the menu board in the taproom, I would pick the following two beers (and also get a beer popsicle, that they serve):

Dark Star Milk Stout

“A creamy and sweet milk stout brewed with English pale malt, flaked and roasted barley and English Crystal Malts. Bittered with Nugget hops, smoothed with 5% lactose. This beer is served with a Nitro tap and is non-vegan.”

Fish Camp Pilsner

“Pre-prohibition style Pilsner. Light and refreshing with a hint of crisp spice.”

Silvertown Ale

“A Kentucky Common cold fermented with a slight sourness.”

Review – The Crisp from Sixpoint

IMG_7369

I have been looking forward to having a Sixpoint beer again and thanks to my sister and the spirit of Christmas, I was able to purchase some.  So I got the Winter Warmer, the Double IPA, Resin and the one that I was most looking forward to (which I bought 2 of), The Crisp.  A lager.  Now I know that lager isn’t cool.  It’s got to be hopped up or imperialized before the beer snobs will deign to drink it but this is a damn good beer period.

The Crisp pours a solid yellow.  Nice floral aroma.  The first taste has a real zing to it.  That herbs and flowers taste really sticks with it.  I will be sure to make this beer colder the next time because I think that will add a layer  that will really round it out.  But as is, with hot L.A. January weather warming it up, this was a flavorful beer.  I would only add a little more carbonation to make it a little less viscous but that is a minor quibble.

Video Review – Lomaland Saison from Modern Times

Modern Times gets the beer review spotlight for January 2014 and we start with their Lomaland Saison…..

Here is the brewery description of the beer, “Lomaland is an earthy, rustic Belgian-style farmhouse ale that’s both complex and quaffable. It smells like hay, pepper, and friendly sunshine. Its dry, cracker-like body and lightly-hoppy finish makes it a beautiful compliment to food. We named Lomaland after the brilliantly crazy utopian community that was the first settlement built in Point Loma, the San Diego neighborhood where our fermentorium is located.”

Classy

stillwater-classique-label

Stillwater, the gypsy brewer will be packaging in four-packs their new beer, Classique (Post-Prohibition Style Lager) , in six-pack cans by July.

I just love that more and more lagers are coming onto the market. Since, we get some Stillwater here in LA, maybe we will find some cans come July.

Review – Sculpin (in cans)

My bier buddy Richard aka Cap’n, recently went to San Diego and he brought back the new, canned version of the iconic Sculpin IPA from Ballast Point.

Here is what I found when I opened the cans….

Pours a lovely orange color.  I am a little dubious about the variety of fruits listed on the label but I am surprised to get quite a bit of apricot balanced out by a charming hit of hops.  The bitterness isn’t super big but it adds a nice punch akin to sea salt too caramel.  Just tastes more frutier than I remember and I like it.

And here is the website info from the brewer, “The Sculpin is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. It showcases bright flavors and aromas of apricot, peach, mango & lemon. The lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops.”

A Thoroughly Modern design

modern-times-640Now Modern Times isn’t selling up in LA yet but if I saw these cans on a shelf tomorrow.  I would stop and take a closer look.  They give off a combination Mad Men meets right now vibe with a dash of old time NFL jersey look to them.

But this brewery is more than just catchy designs.  They have landed some great talent from Lost Coast, Monkey Paw and Ballast Point to brew, run the tasting room and handle the barrels. This puts this brewery on my San Diego must visit list along with Societe.

And if you want to see Modern Times on your local beer seller’s shelves then head over to their Kickstarter page and pitch in!

Review – Get Up Offa That Brown

The latest Golden Road beer to make it to the cans is Get Up Offa That Brown. They come in the the new-ish four packs with a window to see the really cool Sunset Strip can design.
IMG_3556
The crew at Golden Road describe it as a “…traditional English-style Brown, complete with chocolate-y malt notes and a smoky-sweet aroma has been a draft-only favorite since its introduction in early 2012.”

It does indeed pour a cola brown with a bit of a fizzy stream of bubbles. Right out of the ‘fridge the taste is muted but once it gets to room temperature the malt notes start adding up giving you a flavor profile that leans towards toast but touches on a sweetness and a skosh of chocolate before the carbonation takes it away so that you can enjoy the next sip. Like it Hefeweizen and Point the Way counterparts this is very light and quite sessionable.

Maybe next, Golden Road will release a variety pack with one of each of their canned creations.

Eclipse Black IPA

Crabtree Brewing. Yet another brewery that is new to me and yet another that is onboard the can train. And this concoction sounds like a great 4-pack…”Eclipse, our Belgo-Style Black IPA is an exquisite fusion of black, roasted chocolate malts, and a generous heap of hops. It’s bitterly aggressive with a roasty quality, fruity esters and a spice scent making this one superior brew.”

Mostly because I am still looking for that great BIPA.
