Craft Beer Cellar

Whilst perusing the People issue of All About Beer, I noticed a little throwaway line about a pair of entrepreneurs who have started a chain of craft beer bottle shops.  It said, that they were going national and one spot on the list was a little burg called Los Angeles.

And lo and behold it appears another bottle shop is headed our way….

Craft Beer Cellar is primarily in Massachusetts but they are expanding outward.  And from what I have read are big on beer education.  Which was a theme of the people issue.  Which is why I think they will fit in with the likes of the other LA beer-lebrity from that issue, Ting Su of Eagle Rock.  What I especially like after reading a few of their blog posts is that they tell their opinion but also don’t take it as gospel.  They explain why they do things and that is that.  Love it.

I will update where they will be opening (Los Angeles could mean anywhere) and when (hopefully in 2015).

Certified LA

Every day brings more crafty-ness to the L.A. area. The momentum is still building here in the Southland and here is another example.

Certified Market is a Monrovia based bottle shop that has been serving their corner of the craft beer world since 2005. And I am just now hearing about it!

They have over 200 bottles to choose from so you won’t go away empty handed.

Top Hops

NYC is a great place for the beer curious and another spot that I have heard about is called Top Hops.

They call themselves “merchants and advocates of great beer.” And with over 700 bottles and 20 taps, it is no idle boast for this hop spot near the Williamsburg Bridge. With the likes of Clown Shoes, Greenport, Left Hand, Troegs and Captain Lawrence available, it looks like a place you can while away many an hour.

Uptown Market

Everywhere you look in my hometown of Portland is another great place to buy beer. And it seems like every month, I hear about yet another place.

Uptown Market has all of this going on, “Uptown Market strives to meet the needs of its clients. We have a large selection of domestic and imported brews in all shapes and sizes. One of the special features that we pride ourselves in is the two running taps that we have at all times. We offer regular tasting with a highlighted beer, stop by to find out our scheduled tastings. Along with the growler sales we also offer kegs to go for the more serious drinkers, a list of available kegs can be found on our product page. And for those of you who are the more do it yourself type we have all the fixings for making your own brew. We have Kegerators in stock as well as the parts and knowledge how to convert an old refrigerator into that kegerator you have always wanted. For those of you who live close and stop by often we have provided other convenient items that make your day to day shopping easier and efficient.”
As I write this post, they have Thai Wit from Laurelwood and Double Jack from Firestone-Walker on tap. That alone should get one to stop in.

Select Beer Store

I ventured way south on a Friday night from my valley hub to Redondo Beach to visit a new member of the FoodGPS Beer Blast and two week old bottle shop and tap room, Select Beer Store. I mentioned them in a post a while back and now I can share some photos.

Owners Wes and Heather have taken a spot just on a bend of PCH and made it into what I see everywhere in Portland a folksy and welcoming place where you can get a bottle to take away or peruse the tap list for something to enjoy on site amongst the bottles.

I also met my contact David and he told me about the tinted windows and the beer safe lighting in the coolers and how they have plans to host events all of which I think are great. But what caught my eye was the fact that they sell make-your-own mixed packs too!

Another neat touch is the wall art of old time canned beers right above the boxes of beer. The place is well laid out and designed.

Buzz Wine & Beer Store

Downtown LA is shaping up as a great beer destination. Far Bar in Little Tokyo, Public School 612 plus the yearly Craft Beer Crawl put on by the Beer Chicks.

Another addition to check out is the Buzz Wine & Beer Store on the corner of 5th Street & Spring Street.

From what they have posted on their website, they have a good mix of imports and California beers as well as a few others.

I will scout it out in the future and give a further report then.

Sunset Beer Co. is about to open….

…and by about to, I mean tomorrow, Saturday!

I toured the new space which has a beautiful grand hotel bar look to it with dark woods and bookcases and big art pieces on the walls.

It is split into two sections. You walk in and see a row of coolers to the right which hold the starting inventory, which will grow. Right now you can pick up Aphrodite from Ommegang or an Oyster Stout from Porterhouse of Ireland,

The bar section is separated a bit on the other side but you can still see the bottles while perusing the tap list. With Alex Macy at the helm you can expect a good variety of beer for all levels of beer enthusiasts. Last night, Dortmunder Export from Eagle Rock was a popular selection.

So clear some room out of your ‘fridge so you can support a local business!

Beer Table Pantry

I am not quite sold on the name but I am sold on what they doing in Grand Central Station according to the DNA Info website, “The popular bar’s new Beer Table Pantry, which is set to open July 29, will be a retail version of the store’s successful Brooklyn location, with a wide selection of local and international brews that mark a major departure from the generic Budweiser, Miller and Coors options now available in the station.

The 300-square-foot shop will feature six rotating draft beers for growlers that focus on regional breweries. The half-gallon jugs will be available for a $5 deposit, and fill-ups will hover in the $10 to $15 dollar range.”

I would take mass transit every day if there was a growler stop along the way!

Hop & Vine expansion

Another Bottle shop is open today! I heard that the Hop and Vine was expanding from the great podcast and radio show Beer O’Clock.

And today is the kick-off for the bottle shop which is next door to the bar and eatery and lovely outdoor patio. Should be a great and grand opening.

Big Apple – Good Beer

I don’t care what side of the US it is on. When a new beer store opens up, I start salivating. If you are in a New York state of mind (oh horrible reference) then head to 422 East Ninth Street and visit the 900+ beers at Good Beer.

You can get meat and cheese along with the draft and botle of your choice.
