Recap – MacLeod’s 3rd Anniversary

Sometimes it takes me time to catch-up. In the case of MacLeod’s, it took until anniversary three before I made it out to try their cask ale extravaganza.

In addition to their main bar, which held their house cask beers plus three from their staff brewing program. There was a wooden set-just as you entered the taproom and one back in the brewery to showcase beers from a wide swath of local L.A. breweries.

An intriguing aspect was that two past MacLeod brewers had beers tapped from their new breweries, Andy Black at Yorkshire Square brought Castle Dangerous Export Stout and Josiah Blomquist at Iron Triangle had their Dark Ale.

There were also a pair of intriguing sours available as well. Both Dry River and Cellador were in casks next to each other. With the Firegold # 6 with grapefruit from the latter being particulary good. I also enjoyed the Ladyface IPA with tangerine and habanero. Not too spicy and not too fruity but both flavors came through well.

Despite the overbearing valley heat, everyone was having a good time mingling and going from cask and cask.

Starting tomorrow, Select Beer Store in Redondo Beach will celebrate their 3rd anniversary with a long weekend blow-out.

Thursday brings the collaborative beer Select Monk 3, a tripel naturally, that was brewed with Monkish Brewing in nearby Torrance and then their “favorite LA and Orange County breweries” will be on tap for your pleasure along with food from the Barley Hops Grill.

Support your local craft-centric bottle shops so that more will open in the future.

Anniversary on Sunset

After L.A. Beer Week and without the Great American Beer Festival on the agenda, I was able to take a mini-vacation of five days from beer so that I could prepare for Sunset Beer and their anniversary party.  And this year, there is a twist…the tap list will include a collaboration with Monkish Brewing of Torrance, for the aptly named Sunset Beer’ brewed with Lotus Seeds.  I have never had Lotus Seeds so I don’t know how they will taste in a beer but if Monkish can make me enjoy pistachios in a beer, which I don’t eat in real life, then I am down with the lotus.

IMG_1793

One of my favorite events on the Los Angeles beer calendar is the Session Fest at Eagle Rock Brewery.  And it is back in it’s 3rd iteration!  From 4pm to 10pm on May 4th.  Here is the news feed from their website…..

“Session Fest is all about great tasting beers that don’t get you blitzed. All your favorite brewery staff will be brewing up some special session-style beers to share with you. We’re currently mashing, hopping, fermenting and working our butts off to ensure some deliciousness not to be missed!

This year for just $15 you’ll be able to get 3 beers and a half pint commemorative Session Fest pint glass to take home with you!

Additional drink tickets will be available to purchase as well.

We’ll have a food truck in the lot also and we’ll let you know who once we have it all worked out.”
