Re-Cap – The Propagator’s 3rd Anniversary

On the last weekend of this month, I took in the sights and sounds and beers from the 3rd Anniversary of The Propagator.

Here is the re-cap: It was a strangely slow early morning at the Venice adjacent Firestone Walker location. This despite the high quality and higher creativity beers on tap. Haven’t had Rosalie, it was there. A Watermelon kettle sour, yup as well as many hoppy treats on hand. Plus the deal was great. (2) beers a side and a cup for one price. I assume that as the day wore on, that it got more crowded.

For my two beers, I started big with the Gen 3, triple IPA. Double digit ABV and for me, a return to those big bruiser Imperials from back in the day. Lots of malt and caramel and boozy. I backed down for the second and had the Eichenkeller because Keller beers are always an attraction. This did not disappoint. Super malty and bubbly with a nice minerality versus hops.

And I got to talk with some grand folk in the beer writing community as well as Merlin himself.

The Prop is 3

The southernmost arm of Firestone Walker’s California empire will be 3 years in Venice / Marina Del Rey and are throwing a ticket-LESS party.

Here are the details…. “Enjoy live art & photography from our friends at Venice Arts, as well as outdoor games, amazing beer & food specials! No tickets necessary, just stop by & join us for the fun. Anniversary Special: two beers & one small plate of food for just $15!”

There will be live music and a commemorative logo’d Klean Kanteen re-usable cup for your beer (while supplies last). Plus some really good FW beers.

ADBC3

Arts District Brewing will turn 3 this year and to mark the Anniversary they will be releasing 4 new beers in bottles on Sunday, January 13th.

The Bottles: (the first two being the ones that intrigue me the most)
Umbra Avena – Whiskey Barrel Aged Oatmeal Stout, 7.0% – Caramel and espresso brownie richness with sarsaparilla and burnt sugar notes. Aged in Redemption Rye Whiskey barrels.

Aurora Silentium –  Barrel Aged Belgian Quad, 9.9% – Dark, sweet, and lowly carbonated to create a vinous result, this unblended barrel shows notes of raisin, chocolate, leather and dark grape must with moderate acidity.

Aurora Caelum – Flemish-Style Red, 5.0% – Dried Rainier cherries were added to an amber base coolshipped on our roof. Significant sourness and funk, with bursting cherry intensity.

Aurora Rubicunda – Cherry Sour Saison, 5.2% – Cherry jam blends with phenols that disguise themselves as cinnamon and clove, creating a curious cherry pie dessert experience.

Recap – MacLeod’s 3rd Anniversary

Sometimes it takes me time to catch-up. In the case of MacLeod’s, it took until anniversary three before I made it out to try their cask ale extravaganza.

In addition to their main bar, which held their house cask beers plus three from their staff brewing program. There was a wooden set-just as you entered the taproom and one back in the brewery to showcase beers from a wide swath of local L.A. breweries.

An intriguing aspect was that two past MacLeod brewers had beers tapped from their new breweries, Andy Black at Yorkshire Square brought Castle Dangerous Export Stout and Josiah Blomquist at Iron Triangle had their Dark Ale.

There were also a pair of intriguing sours available as well. Both Dry River and Cellador were in casks next to each other. With the Firegold # 6 with grapefruit from the latter being particulary good. I also enjoyed the Ladyface IPA with tangerine and habanero. Not too spicy and not too fruity but both flavors came through well.

Despite the overbearing valley heat, everyone was having a good time mingling and going from cask and cask.
