Stop Spiking


OK, we have spiked soda, spiked water and now spiked coffee? The above is a 12.5% ABV coffee/wine hybrid, that has caffeine and probably a metric ton of sugar to re-create Caffe Mocha and Salted Caramel flavors.

I can’t imagine this sector lasting all that long. The spiked soda’s that I have unfortunately have tasted are gacky in the extreme with a lot of sweetener as the dominant flavor. And if I am not mistaken, there are lots of flavored vodkas and liquers that already hit those notes and carry higher alcohol content.

But the main issue I have with this latest “spike” is that alcohol is a depressant and caffeine an upper. What are you telling your body to do with that split? Your brain is probably just going to shut down from confusion.

I think discerning craft beer drinkers may dabble in these but will soon return because just adding booze is not “authentic” in any way shape or form and it shows in the taste.
