Beer TV

You may have seen Drinking Buddies, the movie that charted two couples relationships with the backdrop of a Revolution Brewing in Chicago. Now, the City of Angels has their updated version with “L.A. Beer” a sitcom Web series taped in front of a live studio audience.

It is a workplace comedy set in a brewery that stars Sam Daly (“Hot in Cleveland”), Arianna Ortiz, Kevin High, Alicia Ying, James Lontayao and Sarah Stoecker. The series is Executive Produced by Sam Miller a staff writer on the CBS show “Mom”.

The series will debut with five episodes on YouTube beginning May 11, in conjunction with American Craft Beer Week. Five more episodes will be posted in June to match-up with L.A. Beer Week.

Here is the trailer to whet your appetite:

Review – Heritage Festival at Angel City

This is the third Heritage Festival for Angel City Brewery and the first visit for me.

Say what you want about the sometimes uneven beers from the DTLA brewery but they have an ideal party space. Whereas noise at most festivals is a cacophony of conversation, street noise and music, the cavernous ACBC space diffuses sound so that conversations can take place plus I love the art on the walls which is of the edgy graffiti-esque variety. It is a pleasant change from the big screen TV usual in some bars and taprooms.

But what about the beer?  I tasted one of my favorites Marilyn along with a flight of darker beers that included the new Orange Cocoa, Dark Rye Lager aged in Brandy barrels and the Imperial Chai Stout.  Despite the heat of the day, the stout was quite good. There was a progression of flavors from stout to orange to chocolate.  I had a bottled version of the chai before and it had more  of the tea character on draft. It is hard to balance spice in a beer and this was a skosh too heavy but not egregiously so. The Rye Brandy though was far too spirited for me. The beer was overwhelmed by the brandy. That being said, if you like brandy, than this beer might be for you.

Also on the plus side of the ledger was the food.  Two L.A. institutions were in attendance.  Kogi and Phillipe’s Original.  Can’t beat that for food choices.  Plenty of seating both inside and out and little to no lines either.  That is a recipe for a fun Sunday afternoon.

Mom’s Day at MacLeod’s

Screen Shot 2015-05-02 at 8.44.53 AM

There is usually fanfare when a brewery signs up with a distributor. What there normally isn’t is a party with that distributor featuring the other beers in the portfolio!

But that is what MacLeod’s Ales is doing with Artisan Ales. In their words, “We will be showcasing some of the other wonderful breweries they represent, right here in our tasting room! Besides our own cask ale, we will be featuring beers from:

Craftsman Brewing Co.
Noble Ale Works [something special just for this event!]
Telegraph Brewing Co.
Kinetic Brewing Company
TAPS Fish House & Brewery
Longsdon Farmhouse Ales

With all that beer it is great that a food truck (Tacos Chihuahua) will parked outside.

$35 advance purchase, $40 at the door On May 10th (aka Mother’s Day)

Review – From the Barrel with Firestone Walker

IMG_3870

From the Barrel presented by Firestone Walker is a one of a kind event. I often wish / lament that events or beers were held here in Los Angeles and FtB fits into that category.

It is a well-run show. You know that the choices of beer, spirits and food will be plentiful and good. But it is the not-so-little things that make this event a success. The amount of tickets sold is regulated. The location adds to the ambience. The localness of the vendors. All of it is needed or even the best beer will not taste as good.

FtB is unabashadely a post-prohibition party and even I, a non- costume dress up guy who tired of Halloween long ago, had fun dressing up a bit.

What caught my palate on the drink side was Crooked Stave’s Blueberry beer was really good as was the barrel aged Manhattan shaken by the Eureka! Burger folks. I was also taken with the selection of Moonshines from straight-up to Apple Pie to Sweet Tea from American BornNinkasi threw a change-up with an IPA, This is Why I’m Hop that cut through the bigger beers on offer.

Even with three hours, there was no way that I could taste all that I wanted to taste without passing out. That is both a good and a bad thing. I am of the temperament that if given ten choices, I will want to try all ten. I would be happy with five but if I miss five then I feel like I got less. All of that is to say that I think the choices (except for food) could be trimmed back a bit. This would not detract from the experience and also free up some much needed elbow room.

That leads to my second suggestion for improvement: seating. Costumes are not usually the most comfortable. Especially the high heels for women. But there was no real place to sit. There were a few table tops to place your tray and glass on but a few picnic tables spread around would have been very welcome.

I was an still am split on whether the placement of vendors worked or didn’t. Part of me would have liked the whiskey in one area, beer in another and food in another with maybe a crossover table where a beer aged in a whiskey barrel would be in between that brewery and that distillery.

The main question in an event review is; Would you go back again? The answer is, yes.

Vegans take over the Rose Bowl

You won’t be dodging floats or UCLA linebackers on May 16th at the Rose Bowl. Nope, but you will be treated to a great location for drinking beer and eating some vegan food at the 6th L.A. Vegan Beer Festival.

I am not vegan so the main draws for me would be sunny location in the arroyo with a gorgeous view of the mountains and the beer. And as you can see from the list, you will have a fine beer time for sure.

Now if they could only get each brewer to run out of the tunnel to a thunderous applause like in the football game.

Tony’s Darts Away – 5

TDA_5thAnniversary_3-17-15-2-2
Midnight IPA and a “Sour Easter Sunday” will ring in the 5th momentous anniversary of Tony’s Darts Away on April 4th and 5th.

I can’t remember what Burbank without Tony’s was like. And that means that Golden Road and Mohawk are even younger! For those who haven’t made the trip to Magnolia Boulevard for an anniversary, each hour from 10am to 7pm brings a new beer on tap. And not just “any” beers mind you, but aged beauties like:

Hangar 24 – Pugachev’s Cobra (2014)
Firestone – Parabola (2013)
Lost Abbey – Bourbon Barrel Angel’s Share (2014)
Russian River – Consecration
Russian River – Supplication
Lost Abbey – Spontaneous Cheer (2013)

Telegraph Brewing Company should not be an “obscure” reference to beer geeks especially with their forthcoming Dia de las Obscuras Rare Beer Festival. The event held on Sunday, May 3, 2015 (in two separate sessions) at the Telegraph tasting room in downtown Santa Barbara will be one-stop shopping ot 10 barrel-aged and wild-fermented Obscura Line of experimental beers.
