Trejo & Lincoln

Taco and donut magnate (and occasional actor too) Danny Trejo and his iconic face are on a new beer from Lincoln Beer Co. of Burbank.

I had a sneak taste of the beer and heard about the backstory of it as well…

Danny Trejo himself does not touch alcohol but Lincoln was approached by the team at Trejos Cantina/ Tacos to create a branded beer for their restaurants. In fact it has been on tap for a few months now. The brewer, Pat, was initially skeptical since he was not a fan of the Mexican lager style (the word skunked was thrown out a couple times) but it was taken as an opportunity to do their take on the style, something that doesn’t interfere with the food that it will be most likely served with, tacos.

The beer itself is so-so in my opinion. I catch some metallic as well as a little pear to it. It is less zippy and more a smooth version focusing on the malt. The beer that I was more taken by was the new Aussie Summer Pale. It had a menthol / mint flavor that was new coming from the seasonaly named Summer hop.

Lincoln will be throwing a big bash surrounding the can release and of course you can get the beer at Trejo’s too.

Lagerville

If you are the type that needs to see the brewery line-up before a festival, well maybe this will have you driving to Buellton in July…

…that is a darn good representation of the major California brewing communities (plus a couple overseas entrants) and it’s lager to boot. Check out the tickets HERE.

Recap – Smog City Anniversary

I should probably visit Smog City more, I get caught up in trying to catch up with the new, but then every time I head to Torrance, I find a great beer on Del Amo. This year’s Anniversary was no exception.

I started with the two specially brewed beers. 420 Juice Juice and Saison Juice. The former used cannabis terpenes to create flavor and it was big. Sugared grapefruit hits the nose and came on strong in the taste. The latter was a beer / wine hybrid that I wished was stronger in the wine component. It was a solid Saison but lacked the depth that other Smog beers of the style have had in the past.

The next pair of tasters were also new from the Smog City cellar. Quixote’s Quotes quoted a mix of cedar and orange but neither really broke through the tartness. Peaches n Booze was like an overboard peach tea with a touch of bourbon.

I also sampled three of the cocktails since the team at Smog put a lot of work into them. All three that I sampled were fine as creative cocktails, but none really had the beer at the forefront. With the exception of the Bourbon OE which had a really nice boozy strong balance going on and the slightly burnt orange peel added zest as well.

As usual, this was a well run event. Great food choices with Mexican, BBQ and donuts to be had. Fast and friendly service and the weather was perfect cloudy to start but then warming up without getting hot. It should tell you something that this is one of the rare anniversary parties that I attend with regularity.

O-Day

Going from a full month of Flagship beers to just one single day for the world classic of Orval. I’m glad that at least this day is around to remind me (and you) to drink this damn fine beer. Make sure you get one today, should be $6.00 or so but well worth it.

Maybe, like star signs, each month should have a beer like Orval as the totem for that month. And make Saison Dupont the one for February.
