Review – J Wakefield at Beer Belly

Beer Belly has been reaching further for their One Night Stand program this year as evidenced by Florida brewery J Wakefield pouring last Wednesday.

Here are my first impressions of their beer…

DFPF Berliner (Florida Weisse) Pours a bright fuschia color.  Fruit juice aroma.  Quite tart.  A bit of wheat peeks through at the end. A bit of a kool aid experience.

The Man with a Golden Churro – Quite the simalcrum of a churro.  I taste burnt caramel.  Burnt high ABV at the end. My favorite of the three tasted.

Brewery Royale – very Heavy tasting. Lots of coconut.  They must have gotten a bulk sale of the stuff it was in every beer. A spice hit but did not scream cinnamon.

My cohorts for the night both did not like the El Jefe. Something about the coconut mixed with the clove that created some weird faces on them.

MacLeod Day – 5th Anniversary

The math is a little wonky but don’t tell MacLeod’s. For their 5th anniversary they will be pouring $3 pints all day.

Food and live screen printing of the MacLeod logo will be going on as well so head over to Van Nuys for some cask and non-cask English styled beers.

Recap – Session Fest

Wanna know what fun and super low ABV beers were being offered at the 2019 version of Session Fest? Well, read on…

…and that was just the inside tap list. There were still beers outside to try. Let’s get the bad news out of the way first. I was excited to see Brewery Draconum on the list. This is a brewery on my to visit list and their Kolsch did not strike me well. Tasted kind of green and un-kolsch-y. I also had a Mexican lager from Absolution and it was another below par performer from that Torrance brewery.

On the positive side of the ledger, the Malty AF from host Eagle Rock was a delight. Doubt it would sell in a 16oz can but it was as name suggested a dive into malt. Loved it. The other winner for me (unsurpisingly) was from Cellador. Their Famille is a past Food GPS Beer of the Week and it was delicious. Tart and earthy and malty and fun.

I really like this festival because of the depth of beers. There is a deep bench of beer styles that are not seen and this event showcases them. It may not be as sexy as a DIPA Fest but the true craft believers will find themselves at this event.

Re-Cap – The Propagator’s 3rd Anniversary

On the last weekend of this month, I took in the sights and sounds and beers from the 3rd Anniversary of The Propagator.

Here is the re-cap: It was a strangely slow early morning at the Venice adjacent Firestone Walker location. This despite the high quality and higher creativity beers on tap. Haven’t had Rosalie, it was there. A Watermelon kettle sour, yup as well as many hoppy treats on hand. Plus the deal was great. (2) beers a side and a cup for one price. I assume that as the day wore on, that it got more crowded.

For my two beers, I started big with the Gen 3, triple IPA. Double digit ABV and for me, a return to those big bruiser Imperials from back in the day. Lots of malt and caramel and boozy. I backed down for the second and had the Eichenkeller because Keller beers are always an attraction. This did not disappoint. Super malty and bubbly with a nice minerality versus hops.

And I got to talk with some grand folk in the beer writing community as well as Merlin himself.

Session 19

Session Fest 2019 is evolving.  In the past, Eagle Rock Brewery has offered low ABV beers from their brewers and staff but the 2019 version has been opened to other local breweries + proceeds from the excellent deal of $25.00 per ticket will go to the LA Brewers Guild, a local nonprofit representing Independent Brewers.

That ticket price includes (5) pours of any of the available beers as well as the Session Fest glass.  It is a great way to see how flavor and ingenuity can create beers that don’t sit close to the average craft beer.

If you are a fan of creativity and something different than the same old fest, get your Session Fest tickets.
