The Latter

You might have seen this beautiful label and thought that Brouwerij West has another NE IPA ready for you but no, this is a watermelon, lime and cucumber Berliner Weisse and it is just in time for the summer and sounds like a great flavor mix if they have hit the tartness level just right.

Lagervilla

If you can’t make it to the Figueroa Mountain Lagerville event this year, well you can take a little piece home with this 5-way collaboration on an Italian Style Pilsner. Central Coasters love the Tipopils and this looks to be an homage to that style.

Aquanut

The latest IPA craze is yeast based with Norway being the source. L.A. Ale Works is on v2 of their Aquanut that comes out today and this is what they say about it, “This yeast produces intense tropical and citrus fruit flavors, and mild acidity. We double dry-hopped this beer with Idaho 7 and rare Sabro hops. The beer pours bright and hazy and immediately throws off intense pineapple, coconut, grapefruit, and stone fruit aromatics. The body is full and there is a touch of citrus pith on the finish.”

You won’t miss the blue feather adorned can.

Dino-Mite

Well, this one is probably going to go fast due to two words, Great and Notion…

I will look for it because of the wicked cool design and because I love how Brouwerij West uses the good malt from Mecca Grade.

Fuzzball

Beer and Star Wars goes together like protocol droids and astromechs. And if you are looking for a May the 4th beer, well Claremont Craft Ales has you covered…

Though for a hazy, the more appropriate quote might be…

“Your eyes can deceive you. Don’t trust them.” – Obi-Wan Kenobi

On an Island

It isn’t only IPA’s that are getting hazier. Brewyard in Glendale has a new canned DDH lager in cans. Now you just need to find some surf and sun for the New Zealand hops. I have already picked up my 4-pack and will review later on the blog. Speaking with the brewers, they were quite happy with the haze retention on this new beer.

PREF Designed

I am a sucker for a well designed label and when you get artists to do the design it is value added to me.  Boomtown has a new hazy DIPA coming featuring the stylings of British Artist PREF. Not being a graffiti aficionado it was interesting to learn that his “…3D text creates amalgamations of quippy sayings, often placing one word inside of another to give a piece multiple perspectives.” I wonder if the saying will be a hop pun.

Add an Extra X?

Looks like Dos Equis is trying its hand at hops…

…and pairing it with spice. Not liking the wording of Citrus Hops but they are probably generalizing for a less crafty audience while still speaking to the craft people like me. I would take yesterday’s Nica beer over this, but would not push this one away.

Drop It

I don’t feature too much foreign beer here and I especially don’t talk about beers coming from South America but maybe you should check out the foreign cooler and look for…..

Panga Drops is brewed by the Nica Craft Beer Co. in San Juan del Sur in Nicaragua.

Two cool things:

  1. It’s a Keller Pils
  2. 8oz Squat cans

When the weather gets hot, this just might be a good exploratory choice in cool beers.

Beastly Cans

Some may be tired of the 16oz can world we live in but when it is utilized by places like Hair of the Dog or another Portland Brewery, Little Beast, it opens up many possibilities.  Granted both Wolf Camp Saison and Hot Break Sour are “hoppified” in line with expectations from the packaging in customers minds, I hope to see something even wilder in future seasonal releases.
