Not 3rd or 5th

Since I was going to be in downtown Long Beach, I wanted to hit up the beer places on my list. Too long on that list was the 4th Horseman from the minds of Ryan Hughes and Martin Svab.

They like their gothic horror which is similar to the past Phantom Carriage brewery but in a more B-Movie horror vibe. Marrying that to pizza and a killer tap list really works. It was a special beer weekend but they still had a great list including a Fieldwork hazy and Ten Mile Brewing.

Plus the pizza, the plain-ish Slayer Pepperoni was up there with the better beer and pizza choices like We’re Pouring or the Slice & Pint. It won best Long Beach pizza of 2019 which is no small feat for a new-ish restaurant.

Plus the strange performance art bathroom shows some whimsy so they have taken the decor to some fun / weird / disturbing levels.

Cookie Collab

King Harbor has started up a bakery collaboration with fellow Redondo Beach business, Isabella’s Cookie Company. They have created “4 beers based on their amazing cookie recipes” and starting tomorrow, September 7th, they will release the beers…

Maui Wowie – Imperial stout w/ macadamia nuts, white chocolate, pineapple, and coconut

The Muffy – Imperial stout w/ white chocolate, blueberry, cacao, and lactose

Red Velvet – Red stout w/ cacao and vanilla bean

Hot Chocolate – Imperial stout w/ cacao and chipotle peppers

Fat Tire BBQ

Now, I have seen craft beers used in various meats. Usually a collaboration between a meat producer using a beer for one item. But Niman Ranch seems to have gone full on with Fat Tire with not one but five items from brats to ribs to pulled pork and shredded beef.

Wrecked Jerky

San Diego is working on being the beer infused jerky leader. Stone has a couple variants with Tangerine IPA and Arrogant Bastard, now Karl Strauss takes it to a stout level with their famous Wreck Alley. Maybe time for a full taste test to happen.

Three Weavers + Astro in Santa Monica

Tomorrow, you can add fried chicken and a donut to your beer as Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken hosts their Summer Beer Series, this time with Inglewood’s Three Weavers. The food and beer flights include “fried chicken tossed in Day Job Pale Ale sweet & sour glaze, Sliders topped with Expatriate Indian Pale Ale aioli, and a Chocolate Cold Brew Doughnut with Midnight Flight Imperial Stout and Southbounder Coffee Stout.”

I have visited the DTLA Astro on a couple occasions but might try to sneak in to this.

Broken Bread

I don’t talk to often about the non beer related life but since this is also a Los Angeles centered blog that also touches on food, I feel I am within boundaries to give a recommendation to the KCET/Tastemade/Roy Choi show, Broken Bread.

If you are not hooked by the first two episodes then, I do not know what to say. Food is the common language but the issues are all tied together in such a way that it seems they cannot be untied. But Choi has found people really making a difference and he got the Mayor to talk in non sound bites too. Check it out.

Snap Tin Eatery

On the day before Fireworks/Earthquake Day, I pointed the car south to Torrance and Snap Tin Eatery. Some of the eagle eyed among you may have already guessed that Snap Tin is partnered up with Yorkshire Square Brewery. Now there is a full restaurant alongside the Andy Black English beers on cask (and draft).

I had the chance to speak with Chef Bruno Wu who brought the British inspired menu to life and they are really using beer in a lot of the recipes. More than I have seen in other places and the beer actually comes through in the cooking. But more on that in a future Food GPS post but I will say that maybe you should head to Torrance and watch the US National teams play and have excellent beer and food.

Nuys Pizza

Now you can have some Italian pizza with your English-styled beers from MacLeod Ales. I am liking that breweries are expanding into food. It is the next step in the L.A. craft beer evolution.

Little Bay Creatures

The Bay Area will be getting some Down under beer in the form of Little Creatures who are opening a brewery and restaurant in San Francisco this summer. You will have to dodge construction of the new Golden State Warriors Sports and Entertainment Center and Warrior fans to get the Fremantle beer.

Now you can hop from the worldly Mikkeller to Little Creatures for non US beer in San Francisco.
