New Brewery – King Harbor

Finally. You could start many of my posts with that.  Like this one.  Finally, I visited King Harbor brewing in Redondo Beach.

Despite being landlocked, this nautically themed tasting room (even our server had anchor earrings), is a nice and open space to try the current offerings from this few months old brewery.  Their beer line-up is growing as they do but as of this writing, you could get a full flight of 5 tasters with two being variants of a regular beer.  We started with the Quest which is a rotating pale ale featuring a single hop.  This day brought El Dorado but Hallertauer Blanch and Hull Melon are in the future and would be highly recommended way to sample these new hops on the market.  I enjoyed the beer more than I think I like the hop which finishes a little too dry for me.

Next was a pineapple version of that same beer and though I was trepidatious about it considering how sweet pineapple can be, this really worked and was my favorite of the group.  Maybe the use of actual pineapple and not juice was the trick.  But the hops and the fruit really worked well together.  At this point, I was hoping that the positive streak would continue and though I enjoyed their take on the saison with lemon verbena, it lacked a more pronounced Belgian kick that I have come to expect.  Solid though and again the ingredients were there but not overpowering which indicates a light and balanced hand at the brewing controls which bodes well.

Then it was onto the darker pair of beers.  Abels Brown is a java bomb and a good one at that.  Almost too heavy but then you look at the ABV and it is really low.  In fact, none of the beers were over 5.5%.  We also tried the vanilla version of Abel which was a little sweet but still worked.

All in all, for such a young brewery, King Harbor seems ahead of other breweries in their age bracket that still seem to be finding their footing.  I would heartily suggest adding it to a Torrance tour for comparison and I believe you will agree.

Select Beer Store

I ventured way south on a Friday night from my valley hub to Redondo Beach to visit a new member of the FoodGPS Beer Blast and two week old bottle shop and tap room, Select Beer Store. I mentioned them in a post a while back and now I can share some photos.

Owners Wes and Heather have taken a spot just on a bend of PCH and made it into what I see everywhere in Portland a folksy and welcoming place where you can get a bottle to take away or peruse the tap list for something to enjoy on site amongst the bottles.

I also met my contact David and he told me about the tinted windows and the beer safe lighting in the coolers and how they have plans to host events all of which I think are great. But what caught my eye was the fact that they sell make-your-own mixed packs too!

Another neat touch is the wall art of old time canned beers right above the boxes of beer. The place is well laid out and designed.

Select Beer Store

Being a Portlander, I have been waiting for California versions of Belmont Station and Bier Cafe or Saraveza or BeerMongers down here.

So I was happy to see Sunset Beer open up last year and now it looks like another is joining the ranks. Select Beer Store!
Let’s look at the statistical breakdown. 12 taps. Over 300 bottles that you can take away or enjoy on premises (for a small corkage fee). That should be enough to get you down to Redondo Beach.

Get your Hops on!

As in 71 IPA’s in under one roof in Redondo Beach. A tremendous number brought together by the industrious Martin Svab and the Naja’s crew.

Here are some photos from the event.

I sampled the Gauntlet from Iron Fist, the new Black IPA from Strand Brewing and Drake’s Symposium IPA. And I wish I could have had more.

Naja’s IPA Festival

“And so… It’s time for Naja’s Place to kick off our…

3rd Annual IPA Festival on Thursday, April 21st, 2011 for one week.

To mark our 30th Anniversary, this year we will feature somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 of the baddest, rarest, and resinous IPAs, DIPAs, and IIPAs on the West Coast (and a few beyond).”

Naja's Place

After fighting traffic and horrible directions, I finally got to Naja’s Place in Redondo Beach for the very 1st time. Right on the boardwalk, looking out at the harbor, Naja’s is a total beach bum joint with a twist. Awesome list of beers.

I started with my first taste of Magic Hat beer. I had # 9 and it was absolutely delicious. A wheat and citrus mix that has great balance. Nice carbonation. I now need to try more of their line-up because now I am even more interested. Refreshing beer with every sip.

I made a complete 180 on the second beer as you can see from the above photo. Sierra Nevada’s Empire Strikes Black. This looked really good. Great espresso foam on top. Great roasty smell. As the wind came off the harbor, this warmed me up. Very smooth. Malt forward but not aggressive. Coffee notes throughout.
