1st Visit – Paperback at the Exchange

The City of Glendale loves a shopping block that hides.  There are two on successive blocks on the main drag, Brand Boulevard. The Exchange is the older and the city has been trying to revitalize for a long time. The dark side of the building is partially pedestrian only and except for a stalwart coffee shop has had a flux of shops.

But now Paperback Brewing has arrived alongside a British Tea Shop and a live comedy venue.  Maybe? a corner has been turned.

The question is how to get people to the space because the space is cool.  Nothing extraordinary, just a typical retail rectangle but it has been decorated artfully well and there is plenty of seating.  It is a cool spot with a summarized selection of their overall portfolio that I encourage people to visit.

Get a King Taco or In n Out and have a beer a food on a weeknight for date night.

Solarc Beer Co. is now not just a gypsy brewer, now they have a hyphenated name due to a new fermenter installed at Mumford Brewing in DTLA. Plus at least one Solarc beer will be available on tap at the Mumford tasting room at all times.

So now Solarc is a Gypsy+Pop-Up. This will be the first of (hopefully) many small steps towards their own space in the future.

Excitingly, per their press release, “Every time a new beer is ready, a bottle release party will be held at Mumford so fans can come get the freshest Solarc from the brewers hands at a low price until bottles run out. Often times these release parties with be paired with a short musical performance or Solarc-appropriate art happening.”

Look for their new beer Wine Trash first.

Solarc Pop-Up inside of Mumford Brewing’s tap room is open Wednesday-Friday from 4pm-9pm, Saturday 12am-9pm, and Sunday 12am-7pm.

Used Cars, now Craft Beer

If the 2015 Craft Brewers Conference didn’t have enough beer options in Portland, now they have The Drinking Lot a new Pop Up Bar from the minds of Bailey’s Taproom.

Capture

They will be taking over a used car lot that has sat empty for at least the last two visits I made to Portland and they will be open during the conference. They will feature 12 rotating taps mere blocks from the convention center at the eastside entrance to the Burnside Bridge.

an afternoon of colLAborating

The logo is cool but the idea behind it is even better.

Last Saturday, I got to spend a lovely spring LA day drinking beer. Great craft beer at the ColLAboration pop-up Beer Garden. I partook of Stone Vanilla Bean, Bear Republic Double Rocket. Red Poppy from Lost Abbey but my surprise favorite was the habanero Sculpin from Ballast Point. So balanced that I imagine the technical skill it took to pull that trick off. I probably can’t do a pint of it because of my low scovill tolerance but the few sips I had were great. 2nd place went to Brouwerij West’s Blonde. Perfect on a summer day. I love both of their beers.

Brian from Blue Palms talks the beer list.

Volunteer Alex with the pour.

A blonde ale from Brouwerij West to start the day.

Me with Brian Lethcoe from Nibble Bit Tabby.

vanilla bean porter and triple exultation. Guess the brewers!

More analysis to come on FoodGPS on Thursday morning.

Pop-Up Warning

If you live in Los Angeles and love craft beer, and you DIDN’T know about Saturday’s ColLAboration pop-up beer garden, then you are quite the professional hermit.

All pre-sales are now closed. There will be a limited amount of ColLAboration glasses (which are the admission ticket for this and future pop-ups) on sale Saturday.

I will be there enjoying the atmosphere and the beer and taking photos for a future post. To further whet your appetite, here is the first tweeted beers that will be there…”Bruery Gremlin, Russian River Redemption, North Coast Barrel Aged Old Stock.”
