Hop Data Points

Yakima Chief Hops is launching a new program named FWD, to drill down on both on data and the brewing community.

Here are a couple of snippets from the press release, “Participating brewers will be granted access to the newest, not-yet-commercialized HBC varieties and products in Yakima Chief Hop’s innovation pipeline. Application registration is open for breweries interested in trialing cutting-edge hop products and promising experimental hop varieties. In its inaugural year, FWD will be welcoming a limited number of enthusiastic participants. Through brewing trials, questionnaires, conversation and sensory analysis, brewers will have the opportunity to guide these products through their final stage of development, assuring YCH is working on the most useful and exciting products in the industry.”

“The ultimate goal of FWD is to have a circular, growing community of brewers working with Yakima Chief Hops to identify and curate the products that keep beer moving forward.”

Why Anchovy?

Hop producer, Segal Ranch has announced some expanded acreage for the poorly named Anchovy Hop (read Anchovy for more info) The main flavors are watermelon and cedar.  

This falls in the middle of their new hops which includes Zumo which is out in at least one beer from Russian River and maybe more since it too is getting more land as well as a third varietal with the exotic name of Tangier due to a lead aroma of tangerine peel.

On the Vista

Don’t go out looking for a single hop pale or IPA just yet but there is a new hop varietal in the pipeline to look forward to, Vista

The link above is for a dedicated website just for it. You can even buy Vista merch. As for the hop itself, melon and stone fruit are the hallmarks of what it brings to the mash kettle.

Talus

We have a newly branded hop to be on the lookout for.  Talus.  Sounds like sport utility vehicle but is a new hop that is a cross between Sabro® brand and neomexicanus.  It was bred by Michael Ferguson of John I. Haas and Jason Perrault of Yakima Chief Ranches. 

What does Talus bring?  According to the press release, “big aromas of pink grapefruit, citrus rinds, dried roses, pine resin, tropical fruits and sage.”  To me, the descriptors that leap out are the roses and sage which sounds intriguing. 

Trident

No, not the gum or the three-pronged spear. This is a new hop blend just released as of last week from Hopsteiner.

The blend is a mix of (3) Pacific NW hops. According to Hopsteiner, it “is a blend developed for those seeking a hop-forward punch to the nose – fruity, citrus, tropical, passion fruit combination to fit any beer style. Using Trident™ is sure to cast a much wider range of aroma and flavor characteristics than any single hop variety could generate on its own.”

That is not the most appealing image I have ever seen (why is there a tomato in the lower left corner?) but the point is strongly made that this will be a “fruit wave”. Now we wait to see how well this plays in the marketplace. Will it burst like Citra or have more of a slow boil like Strata?
