Review – Backwood’s Belgian from Lazy Magnolia

IMG_7630

I love the name of this beer (the label not so much, font is hard to read and the Andy Griffith thing is a little too effort) from Lazy Magnolia that they say has a  ““Southern” infusion of Honeysuckle flowers.”  BB pours a hazy orange yellow. Not much head here. Getting a phenolic aroma first that is typical for goldens and hefe’s . Banana and spice notes bring an almost muffin taste to this beer. It is both slick and viscous on the palate despite a nice burst of bubbles at the outset that I was not expecting.  In the end, it was a little too cloying for me and I am also getting a discordant minor spice note stuck at the end. Don’t know if that is the “tea” or not.

I love the ideas and Southern-ness behind Lazy Magnolia and this beer though not a personal favorite is quite quaffable and certainly doesn’t stop me from wanting to try even more from this Mississippi brewery.

Mississippi Brewing

Living in a “catching up to the craft beer leaders” city like L.A. gives me empathy for other locales that are now ratcheting up their own beer community. So a shout out to the south today for a beerier 2013.

Southern Prohibition Brewery will be brewing (hopefully by spring) in a former furniture warehouse to house a 20-barrel brewing system capable of producing up to 3,000 barrels of beer a year.

Gordon Creek Brewery is mere blocks from Southern Prohibition and they will be brewing on a small 5 barrel system near the creek that provided the name of their business starting in (again hopefully) February.

Both are in Hattieburg, Mississippi.

Stupid politicians

Ugh! Politicians make me want to scream.

Mississippi (home of the fabulous Lazy Magnolia Brewery) is losing the ABV restriction battle it seems. Check out this ARTICLE for the info.

All the politicians have to do is raise the limitation. And it isn’t even a big ask. from 5 to 8%. Mississippi would still be excluding alot of beer (if that is their goal). But more breweries might open if the cap was at 8% and Lazy Magnolia would be able to brew and (gee whiz) sell more beer too!

So check out the website for Raise Your Pints and support from wherever you are.

THANK YOU Lazy Magnolia!

Sometimes the mail brings you bills and sometimes the mail brings you beer (a beer on my wanted list) and beer swag.

Yesterday was the latter, so BIG, BIG thanks to the folks at Lazy Magnolia. Southern Pecan is coolin’ in the fridge and I am wearing the shirt out tonight AND tomorrow.
