Dessert Day – Pie Fest (& Beer)

So, I am a pie guy. Cake is OK but pie is where it’s at. Of course I went to the KCRW Good Food Pie Fest, and part of the intrigue was the presence of…

…what beer would be on offer? Well, it was more an hard Agua Fresca….

…and light and even lighter lager. So here is my recommendation for pie and beer. Find a nice brown ale for general cream and custard pies. If you have cherry pie, a cherry sour would work great. Stay away from hoppy or too sugary pastry stout but a saison would do nicely with fruit pies.

A Beer & A Podcast – Lost Notes

L.A. is blessed with two large NPR stations. KPCC broadcasting from Pasadena and the music-centric KCRW from Santa Monica.

That is the segue to this month’s podcast, Lost Notes.

Basically it is the stories behind the music. I groaned when I saw that one was about the oldie Louie, Louie but that was a seriously fascinating look at a song and how it got stuck in our collective heads. The fact that one version became famous despite being poorly done is amazing.

Later shows delve into Johnny Cash, Captain Beefheart and New Edition. Eclectic to say the least.

And to drink? Well if you type eclectic, music and beer into Google, I bet that Dogfish Head would come up in the top 5, so look for one of their music collaboration beers or look for their Mixed Media wine/beer hybrid and learn some music and beer history.

Fermenting Revolution

A new beer book! I am going to need a bigger bookcase if this pace continues.

Saving the World with Beer – Chris O’Brien is a beer activist. He advocates the craft beer movement, which he argues is better for the environment and the community.
