Beachwood Brewing is launching “Beer Side Talks” this month on March 10, it is “a new educational speaking event series that will bring together people across the beer community for lively conversations on a range of beer and brewing-related topics!”
Up first is talk of the West Coast IPA and you can RSVP for free to this event in Long Beach. Check out the Eventbrite page to reserve your seat.
“Beachwood will also be live-streaming the event on Instagram for those not able to attend in person.”
If you want to learn about hops and on the side have a great meal while you are it, Beachwood Brewing has a deal for you. You get hop knowledge from renonwed brewmaster, Julian Shrago, who will get you involved with a “hands-on hop sensory experience where you’ll learn about 7 different hop varieties that we will blend as a group to create a truly one-of-a-kind IPA for the people!” Tickets on sale Monday 3/9
April 29th, Beachwood Brewingbottles up another fan favorite. This time their “modern” west coast India pale ale, Citraholic is brewed with an abundance of Citra hops and blended with Warrior, Columbus and Simcoe in the kettle (for good measure). The citrusy brew is then dry hopped with a massive charge of Citra, imparting heavy aromas of citrus and tropical fruits along with melon and gooseberry accents.
This one will probably go real fast so don’t dilly-dally.
It will be the “very first tap takeover” for the Pasadena joint and Owner Gabe Gordon, Head Brewer Julian Shrago & Creative Manager Jarred Ekstrom will be in attendance with the following on tap:
Foam Top – American Cream Ale – 5.5%ABV (GOLD Award 2012 World Beer Cup – Blonde or Golden Ale) Hef Leppard – Bavarian Style Hefeweizen – 5.1% ABV El Verano Saison – Belgian Style Saison – 6.7% (Bronze Medal at 2012 Great American Beer Festival® French/Belgian Saison) Street 3, Block 2 – American Pale Ale – 5.5% ABV – 70 IBUs Hops of Brixton – English Special Bitter – 6.1% ABV Knuckle Head Red – American Red Ale – 5.7% ABV (Bronze Award at 2012 San Diego International Beer Competition) The Falcon – West Coast India Pale Ale – 7.1% ABV – 99 IBUs Full Malted Jacket – Wee Heavy Scotch Ale – 9.2% ABV Still Life – Smoked Double Oat Stout – 8.8% ABV – 69 IBUs Beyond a Reasonable Stout – American Imperial Stout – 10% ABV – 85 IBUs
Count me as a Beachwood fan. It seems like everything that Julian brews has such a lovely balance without sacrificing huge flavors and now you can grab some Tovarish to go because Beachwood is bottling!
The 1ST BOTTLED BEER:
TOVARISH RUSSIAN IMPERIAL ESPRESSO STOUT
Here is the news straight outta Long Beach, “Well craft beer fans, you asked for it and it’s finally here—Beachwood Brewing’s first bottled brew, Tovarish Russian Imperial Espresso Stout will be released on December 14, 2012 at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach, CA.
For the first time Beachwood Brewing fans will be able to sip this limited edition stout, available in 22oz bottles. “We are so excited to start bottling Beachwood’s beers for customers to take home, enjoy, and share with their friends,” explains Beachwood’s co-owner, Gabriel Gordon. “This is just the first of many more to come.”
Tovarish was carefully crafted by Beachwood Brewing’s brewmaster and co-owner, Julian Shrago. Brewed on Beachwood’s 10-barrel system, Tovarish is a highly coveted beer! Tovarish is a bold Russian imperial stout brewed with a base of British Maris Otter barley, heaping amounts of roasted barley, and specialty malts. It is finished with a touch of blackstrap molasses along with a custom roasted coffee blend by Portola Coffee Lab in Costa Mesa, CA. “Tovarish is a very special brew to the Beachwood family and we’re looking forward to sharing the love,” concludes Shrago.
This remarkably rich and complex beer is not to be missed! Savor the layers of roast, coffee, and dark fruits with every sip!
Tovarish bottles will also be available at various local Los Angeles and CA retailers.”

The craft beer events just don’t stop here in SoCal and here is another for your July list. Beachwood BBQ & Brewing Tribute to Southern California Breweries 1st Anniversary Party on Saturday July 7th 2012 – 11:30am to Close
Here is the scoop from Beachwood: “Beer is a regional specialty, a craft that reflects our tastes, philosophies, traditions and aspirations. It’s a temporal experience that takes weeks, months or even years of attention leading up to the moment that it’s savored, gulped down, revered or just plain forgotten. We are all lucky enough to live in a region full of craft
beers that will not be forgotten. In fact they will continue to be duly noted on cell phones, laptops, paper scraps or just by a series of baffled expressions that signify beer geek transcendence. Southern California is a special place for beer and we at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing are privileged to be a part of an innovative, eclectic,
uncompromising and truly exceptional community of breweries. As a tribute to all of their inspiration over the years, we’ve decided to celebrate our anniversary with a festival of Southern California breweries.”
Here is your teaser to what you will be reading in the Brew & You column tomorrow on FoodGPS…. DioNicEss has reached the # 10. And to go along with that momentous landmark, there is a special beer made specifically for the event by Julian at Beachwood Brewing in Long Beach. And I was lucky enough to see and taste System of a Stout before it was finished….
And here it is…. …before the aging with coffee and Armenian brandy are added to the mix.
And guests at the event will walk away with this custom growler…. To ensure that you try this beer (Oh and have a spectacular and extreme aged menu crafted at Beachwood BBQ), you will need to buy tickets HERE or grab a rare glass that will escape the brewery at select southland locations.
This will be a night of great beers and great food and I know this because I have been to a couple of these events and Gev keeps topping himself and because I really enjoy Julian’s beers. That + Beachwood food is all the reason you need to snap up one of the remaining tickets.
The beer scene in LA will be a little bit brighter on July 5th.
“We are pleased to announce that after two-plus years of hard work and anticipation, that Beachwood BBQ and Brewing will be opening our doors Tuesday July 5th, 2011 in downtown Long Beach. For those of you who don’t know, we have teamed up with well-known Southern California home brewer, Julian Shrago, to bring to you a new 10-bbl brewpub with 90 barrels of fermentation space.
We’ll be producing about eight year-round finely crafted brews, with a
few seasonals and other special beer projects going alongside. And
yes, we are keeping our normal guest tap list of about 24 rotating
taps featuring only the finest in craft beer. You can bet we’ll have
an extensive cellar in downtown Long Beach too. Our HopCams will be up for both locations, so if you don’t see a chalkboard with what you’re
looking for… who knows it could be on at the other place. And, of
course we’ll pour Beachwood Brewing beers at Beachwood Seal Beach on the regular.
In addition to Julian’s signature IPAs, he’ll be brewing a range of
craft beer styles including stouts, wheat beers, Belgians, and pale
ales. Some of the house beers Julian’s got ready include:
Foam Top Cream Ale, which is traditional American cream ale brewed with American 2-row malt and imported German hops. Delicately hopped, light in body, and very refreshing with a clean finish.
Uno Belgian Single Ale is a lively Belgian blond ale accented by notes of lightly toasted malt and graham crackers. Brewed with imported German and Belgian malts, this beer is finished out with German hops. Floral and fruity aromas round out this refreshingly dry Belgian ale.
Kilgore Stout: an American stout brewed with rye malt for a silky body. Kilgore is brewed with British roasted barley and chocolate malts for a roasty backbone with notes of coffee and cocoa. Hopped with Chinook, Columbus, Centennial, and Amarillo hops for a citrusy Pacific Northwest punch.
The food menu will be the same great Southern barbecue we serve at
Seal Beach with items like slow-smoked, dry-rubbed baby back ribs,
beef short ribs, and smoked chicken. The same great sides like
blue-cheese grits, smoked asparagus, and skillet-baked cornbread will
be there too.
We’ll have much more dining room and bar space, and huge patio area on the Promenade, which is a pedestrian only street. Live music and
special beer festivals are definitely on the agenda. And sure, we’ve
got a few tricks in the bag we’ll break out in due time.
1)“We are very excited to officially announce that Beachwood BBQ and Brewing will soon be coming to downtown Long Beach. We’re opening our second Beachwood BBQ, but we’re going to be brewing our own beer. We’ve partnered with Julian Shrago, a fantastic brewer, who is going to spearhead our brewing operations. Our Downtown Long Beach location will have 12 house beers plus a rotating guest beer program. We’ll be serving the same menu at both Beachwood locations and we are going to try our hardest to make sure that we create a space where everyone finds a friend, enjoys a good meal and drinks some phenomenal beer. We are so thrilled that this is happening and will keep you all posted as we get closer to opening day.
2) In the next several months, Seal Beach Liquor on Main Street will become Home of Beachwood Bottleshop. We’re working hard to get everything together to make this happen as soon as possible. We think that Beachwood Bottleshop is a great compliment to what we do at Beachwood BBQ, it gives us another opportunity to provide awesome products, educate people and interact with our patrons in another way. More details to come, but expect the bottleshop to represent some of the best craft beer, wine and spirits we can find.”
