In the Tap Lines for August 2016

With any luck the heat in Los Angeles will start to drop into fall-ish temperature ranges because there are quite a few Oktoberfest biers heading our way as well as the annual influx of gourd beers. Speaking of the pumpkin, considering the backlash and overproduction of the pumpkin beers last year, it will be interesting to see how much does get to shelves and if it is a little less this year. Now onto what you will see this month on this blog….

~ e-visits to three of the new arrivals to the filled Portland, Oregon scene. Ross Island Brewing, Ferment & Scout Beer.
~ special featured reviews of a mix of styles with fruits and herbs (but no fruited IPAs this month).

…and here is the beer photo of the month…(OK, no beer this month but this time lapse photo of the moon in front of the Earth is too wicked cool to not re-post)

Founder’s Touches Down in L.A.

Last year, Bell’s beer landed in Los Angeles with a massive presence and this year another Midwestern fan favorite is here.

2016 is the debut of Founder’s Brewing. They will have other events across the Southland and their founder will be in town next week but on Tuesday, I headed to Far Bar in Little Tokyo to get a representative sampling of their beer.

Eight beers were on tap and one (Project PAM – a special release) was in bottles. Beer Buddy Richard and I went through tasters of the entire line-up and, for once, totally agreed on favorites. The “regular” Breakfast Stout is indeed a wonderful beer and made both the Nitro Oatmeal Stout and Founder’s Porter seem light and inconsequential.

As far as the hoppy beers went, they did not go over nearly as well. With the exception of the Mosaic Promise a light yellow hued IPA with a lovely citrus aroma. Of the other hop offerings the Centennial IPA was the clear second-place finisher.

It will be interesting how these beers fare in the market.

at the Library Alehouse in Santa Monica
“Put down your pencils and put on your drinking hats! Over here at the Library Alehouse we’ve been quietly building up a serious archive of Dogfish Head beer and with our recent receipt of a certain continuously-hopped, extremely high-ABV IPA, we thought we’d throw a party and put them all on at once!”

Far Bar

Recently, I made my first visit to Far Bar in the Little Tokyo section of downtown Los Angeles.

Don't enter here, go a little further to the side entrance.

I like the chill outdoor vibe with the view of the sky above hemmed in by buildings. You feel hidden and out of the way, until you see the beer list and realize the most of the good breweries must know about this place too.
page 2 of the list.

I had chicken satay and ended the evening with Mach 10 Double IPA from Bear Republic but first I had to try the Pumpkin, sour, cranberry “Kick” from New Belgium. It was slightly sour and the cranberry was there all right. But no pumpkin or earthy squash notes came through. A fine beer but I was expecting more I guess.
the New Belgium Kick

My beer buddy Richard had the Stone 15th concoction and this uniquely served Belgian strong ale from Kwak.

If you haven’t been to Far Bar then add it your beer itinerary.
