Abundance

Repurposing will be the order of the day for many breweries. That beer that was brewed special just might get rebranded. “Abundance of Down Time” from El Segundo Brewing would have had a different name when sipped at Coachella, but since is more than ten people it is now “new”! 13% ABV and hopped up with Chinook, Simcoe, Centennial, Loral and HBC 692 hops.

Featured Review – Old Jetty Barrel-Aged Barleywine 2019 from El Segundo Brewing

Continuing the reviews of beers bought from the Glendale Tap cellar, we go old with the 2019 barrel-aged Barleywine release of Old Jetty from El Segundo Brewing.

This ale was aged in bourbon barrels and strides in at 13.2% ABV. Old Jetty is both prickly and smooth at the same time. There is loads of bourbon character but at the same time the sweetness is restrained. A bit of syrup note here. Great brunch beer.

Mayberry Grill

Looks like the Slice & Pint was enough of a success to warrant the opening of a food spot at the El Segundo Brewing location on Main Street. Here are the details from a recent press release, “Mayberry Grill is a small offshoot of The Slice & Pint that will be located at the soon to be opened back patio. Chef Matt has been busy finalizing the dual opening menu…. think backyard burgers and tacos to start.”

Dogged Cans

El Segundo keeps adding 16oz cans every once in a while, here is the latest as described by the brewery, ” White Dog is the second IPA we ever released and we’ve decided to resurrect it and give it a proper place in this world! It’s the OG Hazy, that isn’t really a hazy, but the clarity is hazy, so technically…this is a hazy? The malt bill is 50% wheat to soften its bite, so aside from that and clarity, in all other senses this is a traditional West Coast IPA. And for all you DDH and/or Nelson Sauvin lovers out there, White Dog is Double Dry Hopped with Nelson Sauvin.”

NS is one of my favorite hops and glad to see it in a big, burly ESBC IPA.

Review – Ochos Locos from El Segundo

Happy Ocho-versary to El Segundo Brewing, now lets dive into Ochos Locos…

First aroma off this bottled the day I popped the cap DIPA is tropical. Fruit forward. Then the bigness kicks in. I would call the flavor imperial and not double. Oaky notes and dankness take over. Pine needles peek through. This one burns. A real palate wrecker.

Loco in El Segundo

El Segundo is getting crazy to celebrate their 8th with a weekend packed with activity and pizza and all the hops you can handle.

Here are the details….
Friday 5/17– Day One Ochos Locos DIPA Release including a National Pizza Party Day celebration at ESBC The Slice and Pint

Saturday 5/18 – 8th Anniversary Party in the taproom, with close up magician Jeremy Griffith and food by Bartz BBQ!

Sunday 5/19 – Nurse your two-day hangover with us and a Michelada party in the taproom

Switched Gears

El Segundo Brewing is know for their IPA (they even dip their toes in Hazy on occasion) but I want to highlight a barrel-aged collab with Burnin’ Daylight Brewing Company.

Together they whipped up an Imperial Stout then stowed it away in Heaven Hill Bourbon barrels for 9 months. According to the brewery press release it has “notes of cookie dough, brownie mix, cherries, baking chocolate, apricot, bourbon and toasted oak.”

Switchgear Stout” will be available in 375ml bottles on April 4th

Slice & Pint with ESBC

I was lucky enough to make an early pizza visit to the new El Segundo Brewing, Slice & Pint.

Here are some glamour shots of beer and pizza…

The pizza was really good. The ingredient balance was just right and you could tell that thought had been put into each one. I mean, they tasted a lot of pepperoni to find one that had the right flavor and size and would look good too. The space is really nice. Lengthy, with well defined areas including a spot that could be used for private parties with its own taps.

The next time ESBC has a beer release that I am in the area for, I will probably stop here either before or after.
