In the Tap Lines for February 2017

Now that Herr Gropenfuhrer has been installed as POTUS and the contractors at the White House are getting stiffed on invoices, it is the time to drink up, for the end of the world is nigh. So keep checking in to see what to drink and where to go in L.A. in February.

Eagle Rock at 7

January in Los Angeles is a celebratory beer month. It is when Ladyface Ale Companie and Strand Brewing had their born on days and also when Eagle Rock Brewery opened up shop in Glassell Park.

On January 21st, ERB will honor their 7th anniversary with “a carnival complete with a dunk tank, pie throwing booth, giant Jenga, cornhole and more.”

More importantly they will unveil their latest anniversary beer, La Suerte, a 14% imperial Mexican stout brewed with chocolate, vanilla, flaked maize, cinnamon and chile.

Get those Early bird tickets early. They are on sale now for $25 HERE. Tickets include commemorative glassware + 5 beer samples. Day of prices rise to $30 at the door, so save yourself a few dollars to buy an extra sample.

Featured Canned Beer Review – Hop A Feel Pink IPA from Eagle Rock

Yes, it is a Pink IPA. And the color comes from beets! Which is literally the only way I can eat that loathsome vegetable.

With each 4-pack purchased, Eagle Rock Brewery sent $2.00 to the Keep A Breast charity.

Now onto the review, wow that is a pink head of foam on this beer and then you hold the glass up to your nose and the fresh aromas bounce around but it is hops with a citrus hint and not what we expect upon seeing a really red beer.

Hop-A-Feel is labeled a Session IPA but this is no weak sibling. No watery-ness this is full bodied and more on the border of Pale and IPA. And damn if it isn’t the prettiest beer that I have had in a long while.

3056

Area codes are so over for beer names. Now it is street address time…

Eagle Rock Brewery has quietly released a series of beers only available for purchase at the brewery.

Local 3056 beers have included their brown porter, NandoBrau Helles and a Berliner Weisse and they are brewed to acknowledge the regulars that visit the taproom on Roswell.

So plan a visit to ERB and check their beer fridge for a truly local beer.

Sean Suggests for October 2016

For my October suggestions, it’s a wide style variety. The complexity of brett and wood to the clean and crisp of a Midwestern Pils before heading to Japan for some salt and fruit from Hitachino Nest.

~LIGHT
Eagle Rock/ Woodwork #2 5.40% ABV
“Beginning with ERB’s “Unionist” as a base, this beer is aged on red wine barrels and bottle-conditioned with Brettanomyces.”

~MEDIUM
Founders/ PC Pils 5.50% ABV
“Pleasantly crisp, perfectly clean and profoundly crushable, PC Pils is our take on the classic Pilsner style. While Noble hops have been the preferred choice of Pilsner brewers around the world, we went with some of our favorite American varieties. Piney Chinook, pleasantly citrus Cascade and punchy Centennial make this an easy-drinker with floral hop characteristics.”

~DARK
Hitachino/ Anbai Ale 7.50% ABV
“Anbai literally means “Salty Plum” and the word is also used to describe the stat of taste and flavor. Ii Anbai means “just right”! Hitachino Nest Anbai Ale is brewed based on the high alcohol version (7%) of the signature beer Hitachino Nest White Ale, infused with locally grown green sour plum (ume), and finished up with a pinch of Japanese sea salt (moshio).”

Lift a Stein

I won’t touch the sauerkraut but I will be intrigued to see what sort of sessionable Germanic style beers that Eagle Rock will be pouring when we turn the calendar page into October.

The L.A. Brewery has thrown plenty of good beer events in the past and this sounds like another winner.

Populist Message in a Can

With a name like Populist and a style like IPA it was only a matter of time before Eagle Rock’s 7% ABV hop standard bearer would become a best-seller. Add the fact that it will also be in cans starting on Wednesday the 27th will make the 16oz can 4 packs even more popular.

The can sale starts when the taproom opens at 4pm.

Sean Suggests for July 2016

header_beer_shopping_list
Running the gamut of styles this month as we head into the back half of 2016. Going from cherries to Wussies and then Imperialists for those with a political bent.

~LIGHT
Bell’s/ Poolside 5.0% ABV
“A refreshing Belgian-inspired Wheat Ale, Poolside is fermented with Montmorency cherry juice made from cherries grown near Traverse City in northern Michigan. It adds a subtle tartness and bright counterpoint to clove and other fruit aromas that result from the Belgian specialty yeast strain used to ferment this beer”

~MEDIUM
Stone/ Who You Callin’ Wussie Pilsner 5.8% ABV
“For far too long the tyrannical industrialized beer overlords have disgraced and cheapened the noble heritage of the pilsner with their relentless multi-generational downward drive to commercialized homogenization. Over decades, this once vaulted style has been slowly and methodically gutted, bringing forth a soulless and anemic result, all the while spending billions in advertising to convince the unwitting public that their fizzy yellow end result was beer. Well, I will not have it. We are striking back for true craft by stealing the pilsner back from their evil clutches, and restoring it to its almighty glory. They do it cheaply. We do it right. Choose vapidity, or choose righteousness…but whatever you do, choose wisely.”

~DARK
Eagle Rock/ Imperialist 10.0% ABV
“For many years American Light Lager dominated the global beer market, and the industrial brewers who made it worked hard to ensure a long reign of their beer king. Well, times have changed and the old king is dead. No more imperious agendas limiting your choices. You, my friend are the absolute ruler of this new, diverse landscape. Long live the new King!”

Gold Medal Tomorrow

The bottles of Yearling, Eagle Rock’s American Sour Red Ale may be topped with red wax but they should be covered in gold.

And tomorrow, July 6th you can taste the latest batch of the World Beer Cup 2016 Gold Medal winner. The “beer was aged in red wine barrels providing aromas of plum and sour cherry and flavors of ripe fruit and subtle caramel malt.”

Head over to the taproom for a taste and snacks and revel in the victory. More details can be found HERE.
