Featured Review – Cosmic Buzz DIPA from Paperback Brewing

I am quickly falling behind in tasting Paperback beer. I am really missing the old taster tray. Next up is a DIPA with a buzz to it. Cosmic Buzz.

This is an old school DIPA. Big and malty. You feel the alcohol and the bitterness quickly. Flavor wise, you are not going to get complex notes. It is basic and earthy. A powerful beer that does its job. If that doesn’t sound like a rave review, there are a lot of beers that do not hit their marks. This one does it.

Gen-4

You just might have a nautical themed summer with this new DIPA from the SoCal Firestone Walker. Look for it in their mixed packs, that is generally where you will find it or head to the Propagator.

The ‘Gram

If you were going to go after social media, I think that striking at Facebook or Twitter would be better targets. Instagram is the nicest platform (IMHO) but I understand that influencer culture can be a skosh toxic. That being said, I don’t think Brooklyn Brewery is being mean spirited, just taking a poke. Hopefully LA, will be getting some of this special release.

Mosey Up to the Bar

Boomtown Brewery is dropping their first Artist Series Double IPA tomorrow and they have tabbed Matt Sharack (also known as Sharackula) to design the can label.  As you can see this is a Western meets Halloween look and inside, the IPA is powered by Amarillo and Cryo Mosaic hops.  Don’t try to get into a shootout afterwords though.  This is an 8.2% DIPA and will make that shot go a little wide.

Double the Jack

Double Jack is back!

Double Jack was retired in 2016, but like cult TV shows fans kept asking for it, so Firestone Walker has brought it back to life like a Halloween movie for a limited time. I will be looking for the variety pack that it will be tucked into along with Luponic Distortion 14.

Last Lodging

Brouwerij West has been quietly notching some impressive collaboration partners like Great Notion most recently and now a new (closer) brewery in Pizza Port. Hotel Zebra is filled with Idaho 7, Comet, Simcoe and Citra to meld that dank San Diego Pizza Port profile to the softer and hazier Brouwerij West.

Apricot Hop Twice

Following independent beer can sometimes feel like you are following farmer’s markets. All sorts of fruits are used and many times, it is the fruit from the source, like this Apricot DIPA from Transplants Brewing...

Be it Masumoto, Schaner’s or Whalley’s. Keep track of brewery social media and support these farm to bottle products.

Do Not Reply at All

Flipping the other way the Matthew Laurence Knott designed can label for the newest hazy double-dry-hopped double IPA from Angel City showcases the artist well and fits with the POV of the Arts District brewery. Just do not Reply All.
