Amongst the can designs, Boomtown is making quite a mark with their artist series. This time they have enlisted the artist DJ Neff to design their DIPA, “Graffiti”. It will be available in 4-packs and on draft at 12pm on Saturday, December 8th at their DTLA tasting room

Here is the beer info from the brewery…
“Graffiti is an 8.4% Hazy Double IPA brewed with Citra, Mosaic, and 007 hops. Enjoy notes of Pineapple, Tropical Fruit, Kiwi, Grapefruit and Lime Rind.”

Apparently hazy ain’t going away and considering that as I type this, a cloudy day is above me, might as well heed the omens and recommend some….

~LIGHT
Upland/ Juiced in Time6.5% ABV
“Juiced in Time is a New England-style IPA that’s absolutely dripping with ripe tropical fruit and bold juicy citrus flavors. Wheat and oats were added to the malt profile along with a special mineral treatment to the water to create body and smooth texture. Virtually all the hops were reserved for after the boil to minimize bitterness and amplify flavor and aroma. From the glowing orange appearance to the soft creamy mouthfeel and delicate sweetness, this beer is everything delicious about tropical fruit juice embodied in a dangerously drinkable IPA”>

~MEDIUM
Arrow Lodge/ Pinball Wizard6.7% ABV
“Hazy India Pale Ale brewed with Citra, Nelson, and Amarillo hops.”>

~BIG
Boomtown/ District Haze7.5% ABV
“Ultra-fresh and and packed with notes of pine, citrus, and stonefruit.”>

All of these beers can be found at Sunset Beer Co. (unless they got bought up real quick)

Review Ignorant DIPA from Boomtown Brewing

I received a lovely package of aluminum cans from North DTLA Boomtown Brewing recently which included a can of their mural style art emblazoned, Ignorant DIPA.

Here is the review:
Big flavor somewhere between navel orange and Satsuma tangerine. Bitterness is really soft. Sticks to the roof of the mouth. Appropriately hazy appearance. Bright tropical fruit (pineapple) aroma. Bit of hop sharpness upfront that fades really fast.

Boomtown Grand Opening

A negative side effect to being “softly” opened or “event” opened for an extended period of time can lead to a lack of excitement for an actual grand opening party.

But Boomtown Brewing will unveil the fully complete / brand new tasting room on February 4th and there will be a full line up of Boomtown beer, the requisite food trucks + DJ’s with the music and games to play.

Follow their social media to get more details as we get closer to February. Or you can keep your Boomtown soft open vibe going and travel to DTLA on Thursday 2/2 and Friday 2/3 and get there beer too.

Art is Booming

If you haven’t been to Boomtown Brewing since they moved from soft open mode to full open mode, then you might be a bit surprised because it can be seen from blocks away now.

Combined with Angel City, DTLA is fusing art and beer in really big ways. And the outside is just part of the art that Boomtown has going.

First Look – Boomtown Brewery

I had the chance to sample a pair of Boomtown Brewery beers during the L.A. Beer Week bash and came away encouraged.  Did they blow me away?  No.  But they tasted further ahead then some breweries at that point in the process so when Josh from Food GPS alerted me to a soft opening at their downtown LA location, I jumped at the chance to see the place.

Despite the oppressive heat and impressive crowd was on hand as I rolled in at 7pm. The space is not taproom ready at this point but if they and Angel City and Mumford can coordinate walking tours, you could easily walk all three on an afternoon of craft beer drinking.

I ordered up a Nose Job IPA since that will eventually be a line-up regular and was semi-pleased. Pretty dank to me but not heavy or over bitter. It doesn’t break new ground but is solid. I followed that up with B-Side a hoppy red that started off to sweet but started tasting better as the full set of flavors started working together.

I am glad to see that they are doing a mix of Belgian and American styles and I think that this could be a solid player in the industry.
