Tovarish

When I get a press release that says “Beachwood BBQ & Brewing to Release….”, my ears perk up and I fire up WordPress because Julian does awesome work. So without further ado….

“Well craft beer fans… you asked for it and it’s finally here.
Beachwood BBQ & Brewing Tovarish Imperial Espresso Stout will be
released on Wednesday, November 30th at the brewpub in Long Beach.

One of Brewmaster Julian’s most highly coveted beers, Tovarish is a
bold Russian imperial stout brewed with a base of British Maris Otter
barley and heaping amounts of roasted barley and specialty malts. It’s
finished with a touch of blackstrap molasses along with espresso
brewed with the finest Arabian Mocha-Java coffee from our friends at
Peet’s. Tovarish is remarkably rich and complex. Savor the layers of
roast and dark fruits with every sip.

A lucky few might remember back to Julian’s homebrew days when he
brewed this incredible stout as a guest at Pizza Port Solana Beach.
It’s the same great recipe, but this time it’s been carefully crafted
on Julian’s 10 BBL system here at Beachwood in downtown Long Beach.

Starting at 6pm on 11/30 you’ll be able to grab your first pour at our
Tovarish Release Party. NOTE: Growler fills will be available ONLY AT
THIS EVENT. We’ll also have special menu items and Julian will be on
hand to talk about his brews. Tovarish Imperial Espresso Stout will be
available on draught only. 11.2% ABV

 Cheers!”

Beer in the LBC

First excursion to Long Beach in a long while but when you have Beachwood and Congregation within spittin’ distance of each other than it is easier to make the trek from valley to sand. Especially when a designated driver is involved. (Thanks Jennie!)

First stop was Beachwood BBQ…..

…for house beers to go with brisket and blue cheese grits….

…my first Beachwood beer was Reckless Session ale….

…but before that was a trio of Evil Twin beers Ryan the Beaster Bunny saison, Before, During and After Christmas DIPA and my favorite, Biscotti Break….

Then it was a stone’s throw (literally you could throw a stone from one to the other) to Congregation Alehouse….

…to gaze upon the multitude of taps…

… I settled on a Blue House IPA from El Segundo. Second time tasting in two days. A new favorite is found!

Beachwood BBQ AND brewing

from the Beachwood BBQ website

The beer scene in LA will be a little bit brighter on July 5th.

“We are pleased to announce that after two-plus years of hard work and anticipation, that Beachwood BBQ and Brewing will be opening our doors Tuesday July 5th, 2011 in downtown Long Beach. For those of you who don’t know, we have teamed up with well-known Southern California home brewer, Julian Shrago, to bring to you a new 10-bbl brewpub with 90 barrels of fermentation space.

We’ll be producing about eight year-round finely crafted brews, with a
few seasonals and other special beer projects going alongside. And
yes, we are keeping our normal guest tap list of about 24 rotating
taps featuring only the finest in craft beer. You can bet we’ll have
an extensive cellar in downtown Long Beach too. Our HopCams will be up for both locations, so if you don’t see a chalkboard with what you’re
looking for… who knows it could be on at the other place. And, of
course we’ll pour Beachwood Brewing beers at Beachwood Seal Beach on the regular.

In addition to Julian’s signature IPAs, he’ll be brewing a range of
craft beer styles including stouts, wheat beers, Belgians, and pale
ales. Some of the house beers Julian’s got ready include:

Foam Top Cream Ale, which is traditional American cream ale brewed with American 2-row malt and imported German hops. Delicately hopped, light in body, and very refreshing with a clean finish.

Uno Belgian Single Ale is a lively Belgian blond ale accented by notes of lightly toasted malt and graham crackers. Brewed with imported German and Belgian malts, this beer is finished out with German hops. Floral and fruity aromas round out this refreshingly dry Belgian ale.

Kilgore Stout: an American stout brewed with rye malt for a silky body. Kilgore is brewed with British roasted barley and chocolate malts for a roasty backbone with notes of coffee and cocoa. Hopped with Chinook, Columbus, Centennial, and Amarillo hops for a citrusy Pacific Northwest punch.

The food menu will be the same great Southern barbecue we serve at
Seal Beach with items like slow-smoked, dry-rubbed baby back ribs,
beef short ribs, and smoked chicken. The same great sides like
blue-cheese grits, smoked asparagus, and skillet-baked cornbread will
be there too.

We’ll have much more dining room and bar space, and huge patio area on the Promenade, which is a pedestrian only street. Live music and
special beer festivals are definitely on the agenda. And sure, we’ve
got a few tricks in the bag we’ll break out in due time.

Cheers!”

Great news from Beachwood BBQ! On two fronts!

1)“We are very excited to officially announce that Beachwood BBQ and Brewing will soon be coming to downtown Long Beach. We’re opening our second Beachwood BBQ, but we’re going to be brewing our own beer. We’ve partnered with Julian Shrago, a fantastic brewer, who is going to spearhead our brewing operations. Our Downtown Long Beach location will have 12 house beers plus a rotating guest beer program. We’ll be serving the same menu at both Beachwood locations and we are going to try our hardest to make sure that we create a space where everyone finds a friend, enjoys a good meal and drinks some phenomenal beer. We are so thrilled that this is happening and will keep you all posted as we get closer to opening day.

2) In the next several months, Seal Beach Liquor on Main Street will become Home of Beachwood Bottleshop. We’re working hard to get everything together to make this happen as soon as possible. We think that Beachwood Bottleshop is a great compliment to what we do at Beachwood BBQ, it gives us another opportunity to provide awesome products, educate people and interact with our patrons in another way. More details to come, but expect the bottleshop to represent some of the best craft beer, wine and spirits we can find.”

Italian Beers & BBQ

The hot brewery country is still the ever re-imagining US but if you haven’t tried Italian craft beer yet then you are missing out on something amazing. It is influenced by Slow Food, Belgian beer and food. And if you are in Southern California between the 6th and 9th you can taste some truly imaginative beers that Celebrator writer Tomm Carroll has selected along with Gabe Gordon from the great Beachwood BBQ

Two Great tastes that taste great together.

I have soured on….

…sour beer. The great Beachwood BBQ had quite the large selection of sour beers. 5 from New Belgium alone. I ordered Green Monster from Deschutes. A sour made from their organic Green Lake ale. I normally am a big fan of Deschutes. I love their new-ish pub in Portland but this was just too much. It was just sour from the start to the finish. I tasted some of the other selections but none that thrilled me and most made me pucker and then pucker more (except for the Lychee tart which had some fruit). The beers were just too punishing for my taste buds.

I much prefer the balance of a Berliner Weiss or the subtle flavors of the Marriage Parfait 2003. Let’s stop raising the bar and go for subtle.
