A Podcast & A Beer – Ringer Food

I was reading the paltry food coverage in the Sacramento Bee thinking that there has got to be more and fun food news out there, and there is if you listen to Ringer Food.

Hosted by Juliet Litman and David Jacoby, you get a fast paced on the clock round up of news about food. What’s up with a theft of Cadbury Eggs, why did the guy bring ribs onto a flight? Taste tests and more.

Mostly it is fun banter between two people who enjoy food and sharing their viewpoints. You might even find out why some people call ketchup Tommy K.

For beer, no need to don your chef’s toque and apron, instead look for a fun beer. Maybe the label is fun like a Pizza Port IPA with the surf and sand on it, or a wild ale with some crazy ingredient in it. The goal being to keep craft beer fun. Whichever beer does that works.

A Podcast & A Beer – Let’s Make a Rom-Com

Last month, I listened to comedians trying to come up with a plausible Sci-Fi pilot.  Well, that same team has released (on Valentine’s Day of course), Let’s Make a Rom-Com.

Ryan Beil, Maddy Kelly, and Mark Chavez are appealing as hosts / romance writers and because they are both really trying to write a romantic comedy while simultaneously learning about why and how one clicks makes the podcast really work.

For beer, I would head to chocolate. Chocolate stouts. German chocolate pastry beer. Bottle Logic in Orange County has a plethora of beers like that. Or if you want to dig deeper, pick a past or current relationship and where you “met cute” and pick a beer from that city.

In the Tap Lines for March 2023

March, where the national holidays are sparse but a big ol’ beer drinking holiday is smack dab in the middle of the month. Also smack dab is the California Craft Brewers Conference. I will be in Sacramento covering CA Craft from my point of view.

A Podcast & A Beer – Let’s Make a Sci-Fi

This month the spotlight is on Sci-Fi.

Three Canadian comedians try to create a good sci-fi show, in Let’s Make A Sci-Fi.  Those comedians are Ryan Beil, Maddy Kelly, and Mark Chavez.  It is an eight episode series that follows the ups and the downs of birthing the next cool adventure. 

This podcast ticks a couple boxes off the bat, under 10 episodes so I am waiting for a finish and in the 30 to 40 minute range so I know editing has been done.

Plus this is not just a riff-a-thon. The trio are actually trying with humor as a side dish. Plus it makes you think about why you like certain Sci-Fi and not others. I don’t think I would have made the choices they did and I may not have liked their pilot but the getting there was fun and interesting.

On the craft beer side, I would look for any Ecliptic Brewing beers because they have space and astronomy themed beers that would match plus they have some nice lighter PNW IPAs that would be just right. If not Portland adjacent, I would choose a dark as the sky Czech Dark Lager since that style of beer hides a lighter interior.

A Podcast & A Beer – Seen Through a Glass

Seen Through a Glass is hosted by bourbon and beer writer Lew Bryson who many already know and may have heard on other podcasts. Now he has his own show….

…and I think it is really good. It takes a small section of Pennsylvania and blows it up for everyone listening to hear. Plus you have to love Bryson’s big laugh that drops quite frequently during each show. It has a bit of that Rick Steves travel feel to it.

Los Angeles does not get much Penn beer especially not the small producers that Lew has talked about so far but a good substitute would be find your nearest food cart hub like Steelcraft here in Los Angeles so that you can have a food and beer experience since Bryson weaves food into each episode. Plus those trips will get you back into travel mode.

Paso Wine Podcast

Paso Wine Podcast – Where Wine Takes You had a recent episode with guests from Firestone Walker and Re:Find Distilling. One cool section of the discussion is when they talk about a collaboration white dog that the two companies made for a bunch of us beer bloggers way back in the day. I still have my empty bottle in my office.

Another reason to take a listen is to hear about beer from a wine show’s perspective.

A Podcast & A Beer – The Sunshine Place

What better podcast for the holidays than an uplifting podcast about the power of breaking addiction and turning your life around. Well, the Sunshine Place has that to start before it starts swirling into cult territory and becoming really, really bad.

The podcast is hosted by a child of one of the members of Synanon and it is executive produced by Susan and Robert Downey Jr. whom you may have heard about.

It is a really interesting look into someone who you start off sorta rooting for and then it quickly turns into all sorts of nonsense including shaving heads and rattlesnakes.

To drink, I would start where Synanon did in Santa Monica and pick a pint from Santa Monica Brew Works. Then as the commune moved north, I suggest finding a beer from Lagunitas, maybe their hop water to nod to abstinence.
