Brew at the Zoo

Brew at the Zoo is back at the Los Angeles Zoo on August 10 from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m.

I had a great time at last year’s version. Most beer events don’t particularly care about the surroundings. But it is amazing how more relaxed and enjoyable an event can be when the backdrop is nature. And they had good beer too. And beer from places like I&I which is out in the Inland Empire and Noble Aleworks from Anaheim plus they had El Segundo and Strand and Eagle Rock too.

“California craft breweries offer samples during this unique 4-hour beer tasting experience. Upon arrival, “Brew at the Zoo” guests will receive a collectible sampler glass and the opportunity to enjoy many of the great things guests love about their daytime Zoo visits, but with an added twist of 21+ fun.

Aside from the array of craft brands at hand, tantalizing foods will be available to fill guests’ cravings. “Brew at the Zoo” also wouldn’t be complete without the sounds of toe-tapping live music to fill the air. Finally, complete the night with laughter provided by live comedians from the Laugh Factory.

While your taste buds are enjoying the hops-therapy and intimate setting, gaze your sights on animals including the Zoo’s newest exhibit – the LAIR (Living Amphibians, Invertebrates, and Reptiles).

Tickets are expected to sell out to this event and should be purchased ahead of time. Member Tickets are $30. General Public Presale Tickets are $40. Designated Driver Tickets are $20 (does not include a tasting glass or alcohol consumption). All guests must be 21 years of age or older to enter the event.

Stay tuned to find more information about participating breweries, bands and other details HERE. It’s going to be a wild time!”

Beachwood BBQ & Brewing turns 1

The craft beer events just don’t stop here in SoCal and here is another for your July list.

Beachwood BBQ & Brewing Tribute to Southern California Breweries 1st Anniversary Party on Saturday July 7th 2012 – 11:30am to Close

Here is the scoop from Beachwood:
“Beer is a regional specialty, a craft that reflects our tastes, philosophies, traditions and aspirations. It’s a temporal experience that takes weeks, months or even years of attention leading up to the moment that it’s savored, gulped down, revered or just plain forgotten. We are all lucky enough to live in a region full of craft
beers that will not be forgotten. In fact they will continue to be duly noted on cell phones, laptops, paper scraps or just by a series of baffled expressions that signify beer geek transcendence. Southern California is a special place for beer and we at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing are privileged to be a part of an innovative, eclectic,
uncompromising and truly exceptional community of breweries. As a tribute to all of their inspiration over the years, we’ve decided to celebrate our anniversary with a festival of Southern California breweries.”

Pitting for Polycot

On Tuesday morning, I ventured an hour and a half (no traffic, thank goodness) to Redlands and Hangar 24 Brewery to help in the creation of….

“Polycot is a wheat beer brewed with hundreds of pounds of organic apricots grown in Southern California’s High Desert. We brew this beer during the very small window of time when the apricots are at their peak of freshness, usually early July. The pureed apricots add a wonderful fruit flavor to the beer and combine with the wheat for a refreshing tart finish. This beer goes down smooth, but at over 1.5 times the alcohol of the Orange Wheat, it will sneak up on you.”

I pitted for three hours in between chatting fellow volunteers and drinking Polycot 2011 and the Hangar 24 DIPA.

The Hangar crew would bring out a pallet of apricots (1 pallet = 1 batch) and the volunteers would grab a box take the sticker off the apricots, remove the pit and toss the fruit into a collection bucket.

There were a lot of apricots but the buckets of fruit filled up pretty fast.

And despite apricot stained fingers, it was a fun way to be a small part of the brewing process and I will be able to proudly hold a glass of 2012 Polycot and say that I helped to make it happen.

Beer Hop in L.A.

Want to get out and taste beer in L.A. but you don’t want to fight traffic?

Well, now you can call L.A. Beer Hop. Motto: We have a bus. LA has beers. We’re going to take you to all of them.

“There is a fast-growing, delicious craft beer scene in Los Angeles. We’ve got breweries, beer bars, craft brew festivals, and 5-course meals with beer pairings. But, LA is also 500 square miles… that’s where we come in.

We are a charter bus company dedicated to bringing you to all of the best craft beer destinations and events in Los Angeles. We run public and private tours in our 15-passenger bus. Each tour has 3 destinations, lasts approximately 3 hours, and includes all beer tastings and a LA Beer Hop glass.”
