May the 7th Be With You

Calendar time and also a blast from the past. Tony’s Darts Away is a great little spot in Burbank that I have not been to in a long time. Working from home instead of working in Burbank has dropped visits to the neighboring city down.

One of their yearly highlights was a midnight tapping of their Darts Away IPA and then a weekend of hourly special tappings.

Guess what? It’s back…

….and the IPA is from Beachwood! Follow their socials to see what goodies will be on tap and when.

From the Rickhouse

If you want to learn about barrel-aged beer then the next Beachwood Beer Side Talks event is for you.

$15 Ticket includes a flight of 3 specialty barrel-aged beers hosted at Beachwood Downtown Long Beach.”

L.A. IPA Fest # 8

After a hiatus, the L.A. IPA festival returns next month on the 21st of May.

Here are more details about the event that will move from Mohawk Bend in Echo Park to Brennan’s in Marina Del Rey.

“The event will carry forward many of its traditions from prior years. A panel of industry- leading brewers will be sequestered to judge the entries to determine the one most representative of the ideals of a West Coast IPA. Guests will get the opportunity to taste any of the beers and submit their pick for People’s Choice. And a VIP experience will be available for guests that want to rub shoulders with the best in the business.

Over 60 beers will be available as part of the competition, from some of the best breweries within California. North Park Beer Company, which won the 2020 competition with their “Sorta Mostly Dead” IPA, will be present, along with Tarantula Hill Brewing, 2020 winners of the People’s Choice. Also present will be crowd favorites such as Russian River, Highland Park Beer, Green Cheek Beer, and many, many more.

General Admission to the festival includes a commemorative IPA glass and five beer tokens for $38. However, a special Early Bird price is available until April 30th for only $29. A limited amount of “Shadow Judge” VIP tickets will also be made available, which offer the opportunity to enjoy a “brewers’ brunch” with the judges at 10am and view the first round of judging at 11am. This package also includes 5 beer tokens and the commemorative glass, and runs for $125.”

Wooden L.A.A.W.

Los Angeles Ale Works will arrive at their five year celebration this year and have events starting the 17th all the way through the 29th with the signature event being on…

March 19th – “THE BASH. 5 years is the celebration of wood and we’ll have lots to celebrate. Beer and glass releases, merchandise, food, music, expect the usual fun and festivities of past anniversaries!”

Three L.A.A.W.s

Ivy Station, the second location for Los Angeles Ale Works is still in the “works” and now the Hawthorne brewery that is celebrating five years has announced their intention to take over the Boyle Heights location where Indie Brewing recently left.

The former Indie space has a good sized footprint, plus there is a nice courtyard that might be put to use (permits permitting). It could use a bit of sprucing up and a better entrance to the taproom but the bones are there. And with the 6th Street bridge/viaduct opening mid this year and large park nearby, this could be a real smart play.

Hopefully they can brew a beer in homage to the previous brewery to keep a connection to the history of the L.A. beer scene.
