The Audio Will Be Spectacular

If you wondered what 1,150 beer cans opening at the same time sounds like, well then head to Milwaukee, Wisconsin as an attempt to set a new Guinness record will take place. Hosted by the Wonder Bar on Saturday, October 6, at 4 p.m., the current record for “simultaneous beer can opening” that belongs to, get this, Career Consulting Co. of Japan, with 1,149 people might be broken.

For $20, you get a can of beer for opening, a complimentary 2nd tap beer, a commemorative T-shirt, a downloadable photo of the event, and a portion of the proceeds will go to charity.

Xelas

I don’t know how the anti-outside of Boyle Heights crowd will react but I think it is great that Corissa Hernandez and Gabriel Paredes are adding another beer-y spot to their resume with the opening of music venue Xelas (pronounced “chelas”) opening this month.

The duo operate Craft Beer Cellar in Eagle Rock and now will install 16 taps filled with Mexican craft beer and local favorites. Because, you shouldn’t have to sacrifice beer to dance and hear good music.

Beer at Union Station

It’s neither on Imperial or Western but rather at Union Station….

The logo and name for the awaited brewery at the iconic L.A. transportation landmark are here along with the news that there will be an Eagle Rock Brewery alum at the controls.

More news to come.

Help Me Tap This Keg Obi Wan

When Disneyland opens their Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge next year (and probably raises their entrance fee so that only the super-rich can enter) there will be a twist.

Liquor will become available (outside their special and private Club 33) when the Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu opens the doors to Oga’s cantina.

There will be a special menu from far, far away of “proprietary beer, wine and outer-space-themed cocktails.”

Kids will also be allowed into the cantina but the alcohol must stay inside. Perhaps a stormtrooper bouncer will be on patrol?

The next question for us beer fans will be:
1. Who will brew the beer? Ballast Point is big enough and has (had?) plans for a Downtown Disney location.
2. What will the beer be served in? My Star Wars knowledge doesn’t extend to proper Corellian glassware.
3. How much price gouging will go on? I expect a lot.

Books and Pubs Pormanteaud

I am a book fan. Love to read. So much so that I noticed that my totals for 2018 seemed way too low. But if I could quietly read with a pint from a good selection (other than home aka BSP World HQ) that would be an additional good thing.

Well Portland might be in the vanguard for me with the IndieGoGo Rose City Book Pub.

Here is the lowdown and maybe someone in LA can do a City of Angels Book Pub. “Rose City Book Pub is bringing together everything that brings us joy: books, beer, and wine, of course, but also community events, music, art, and good discussions. The Book Pub will be a place for people to gather. It will also be a place for people to retreat to a corner to work or read alone while they enjoy our carefully curated selection of beer and wine.”

Dip a Toe In

It has been really quite unbearably hot. A/C is one way to chill but what about a dip of the feet in cool water….

Eagle Rock Brewery has you covered with this super simple event:
“Come on out for a day of hanging out by the (teeny tiny) pools, sunbathing, or hiding under the shade. Outdoor jenga and cornhole will be available for FREE entertainment. Be brave enough to take a dip, just dip your feet into the water, or simply pull up a lawn chair and grab a can of beer! We’ll be hanging out grilling some hot dogs and drinking some beers poolside from 12pm-6pm on Sunday 9/9/2018.”

Hot dogs and cool feet sounds good.

Strand at Arclight

Good to see that Arclight is dipping their toe into craft beer to go with their movie experience….

…and even better to see that Strand Brewing is involved. I can imagine a range of beers with movie names like Blockbuster Bock or Above-the-Line Alt but those might be too niche-y of beers for a night watching Avengers avenge whatever needs avenging.

Beer Choices at Banc of California Stadium

After reading about $20 beers up in San Francisco and having paid $15 at StubHub center, I was a bit scared and wary walking into the new Banc of California Stadium to see the LAFC take on my Portland Timbers.

I have to say that the field and stadium are really great. Since it was a weekday game, the food options seemed less than 100%. There was no Bludso’s (the metal shield was down and locked), and the Beer Belly spot did not have a food menu leaving tacos and hot dogs basically for food.

And though the beer selection was fine. 805 from Firestone, Expatriate from Three Weavers, Mumford on tap, Iron Triangle cans. But nothing was less than $12 that I could see. And as much as the 805 called me. I could not pay $9 more (which would be 3 more 805’s) than the cost at Trader Joe’s.

A mixed bag then. Good choice – bad price. And I would not suggest sneaking in any, The list of prohibited items was loooong and any bag brought in was supposed to be clear. So, go to DTLA. Mikkeller or Modern Times or even the Whole Foods bar, pre (or post drink) then hop on the Expo Line.

Ranger the Bear Approved

It is hard to believe that the Brew at the L.A. Zoo will be turning 8 this year but that is indeed what will happen on Friday, August 3rd from 7pm to 11pm. Or you can VIP it and start at 6pm.

The Brewery at Simzy’s Burbank has stepped up again and has brewed up a Zoo beer with ingredients chosen by the L.A. Zoo’s American black bear, Ranger (excellent name for a bear, by the way). “Specially crafted for Brew at the L.A. Zoo, the pale ale has notes of hibiscus flowers and honey, ingredients picked by Ranger himself.”

Here are the participating breweries that I think you should taste from (others are either part of SABInBev or trendy spiked drinks)
101 Cider House, Alosta Brewing Co., Angel City Brewery, Baja Brewing Company, Ballast Point Brewing Company, Brewyard Beer Company,Firestone Walker Brewing Co., Five Threads Brewing, Four Sons Brewing, Innovation Brew Works, KeVita, King Harbor Brewing Company, Lagunitas Brewing Co., Latitude 33 Brewing, MacLeod Ale Brewing Co., Pizza Port Brewing Company, San Fernando Brewing Co.,Stone Brewing, The Bruery, Three Weavers Brewing Co., Transplants Brewing Company, Verdugo West Brewing Company, Yorkshire Square Brewery, and more…

How Weird?

It appears that another bottle shop has popped up without me knowing about it. Weird Beers LA is on 7th near Main and Spring.

A quick perusal of their beer menu does not scream weird but maybe they are targeting people who have yet to delve deep into #independent beer.

I will report back after visiting.
