The Backyard

If you want to say backyard in German, then you say: Hinterhof.  It is also what you say when you want to go to a Germanic all-vegan restaurant with beer in Highland Park.

The spot had a start date of January 5th on the York Boulevard portion of HP.  There is an outdoor patio for outdoor drinking from the 12 local tap choices, plus beer from abroad (hopefully German like say, Kloster Andechs. A re-influx of foreign beer would be quite welcome.

Brewheim

I have fallen way behind in Ventura and San Diego county beers as well as Orange County where the relatively new Brewheim has landed in the 2nd half of 2018. It looks like I will need to plan an excursion south.

BBF

Readers will know that I am suffering from Beer Fest Fatigue (BFF). So when I recommend heading to one and spending money on it. It means I think you will gain something from it. On January 19th, the third version of BagbyFest will be held in Oceanside.

Jeff Bagby, the brewmaster at his eponymous brewery, gathers together beer, wine, spirits, cocktails, food throughout their impressive two story space. With his curation, you are bound to get a great sampling of beer.

SF Beer Week ’19

Starting with an Opening Gala, the 2019 SF Beer Week promises a load of fun beer events most notably the original events that serve as the backbone for the week: “the world’s first Double IPA Festival, now including Triple IPAs, in its 18th year at the Bistro in Hayward, on February 2nd, and the Celebrate Craft party for industry and friends at Trumer Brewery in Berkeley, on February 9th.”

Check HERE to see all the events as they pop up on the calendar.

Being Fickle

Long Beach is getting more cider. In addition to Great Society and their strong selection of ciders there will be Ficklewood Ciderworks sometime in mid-2019. The Ciderworks comes from Joe Farrier and Stefan Enjem. It will be pouring at 700 E Broadway on the eastside of Downtown.

Ficklewood will be focused on the dry or semi-dry ciders. More to come when the open date gets closer.

Collaboratory

I have asked in a couple of blog posts for a communal space for all L.A. County Brewers Guild members where beer can be poured from all over L.A. from one cold box.

Well the CANarchy group has taken that idea for the breweries under their umbrella and will be openind a Collaboratory in Asheville, North Carolina.

They are taking over the Lexington Avenue Brewery and under the guidance of Wayne Wambles from Cigar City, will re-open the space “for frequent collaborations not just between breweries within the CANarchy Collective, but within Asheville’s local brew scene, and national and international breweries as well.”

It sounds like a fun way to always have collaborating going year-round instead of just on a haphazard basis. Just wish it was on this coast.

The Collaboratory will open in March 2019 after the space undergoes renovations to maximize the brewing capacity.

Mumford in the Jewel City

Taking a walk on Condo Corridor (aka Central Avenue) in Glendale, I saw this….

If what is inside the circle is correct, DTLA’s Mumford Brewing will be opening up in my city. With the closing of the Pacific Plate taproom which was not in Downtown proper, Glendale was falling behind in the beer race. But finally, the retail space that was considered a value add for these condos and that has been mostly empty may finally be tipping into being slowly (ever so slowly) filled.

With a Laemmle Theater branch that serves Brewyard Beer and now Mumford, things are looking up.

LAnd

Hearkening back to the Hollywoodland sign or maybe to LeBron bringing his CleveLand from Ohio, Los Angeles gets a new journalistic endeavor called the LAnd. And they are throwing a party to celebrate…

I bring it up because like beer, the more papers the better. And also because they will have Angel City beer pouring too.

Support local journalism!

On Foot

Considering that it is 78 miles from Transplants and Lucky Luke to Smog City in Torrance, I can’t imagine someone hiking to all of the L.A. Brewers Guild breweries. But then again, I can’t imagine why people bike in this town either.

Why not drink in the comfort of a taproom? Well, after reading this post by Liz Thomas about hiking to all (yes, all) of the breweries in Denver in 8 days. My feet were aching and my liver and wallet didn’t feel good either and that was without watching any of the news footage that was shot.

Kudos to all the beer hikers out there.
