The second of the duo of re-looks at Lagunitas Brewing is their IPA in the big ol’ stovepipe can.
This 3.2 extra ounces IPA pours a real dark yellow tinted with orange color. Has a pilsner aroma to it and the first sip gives off orange peel, cracker and a dry finish. Very current hoppy pils with old school malt vibes. There is a weird mix of watery mouthfeel but at the top is a very earthy and sodden with hops. As if the brewers were going one way then made a sharp U-Turn. This is a real solid IPA overall and one of the few that is an actual low ABV one compared to big DIPAs that usually get put into these bigger cans.
Gonna lean into the hops for August seeing as how we are nearing fresh hop season. Here are three SoCal IPA’s to add to your shopping cart.
Benny Boy Brewing Hazy Persuasion IPA – 6.3% – “first ever hazy has landed and a juicy one with an intense amount of Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe. The result is a light, pillowy body with a dank fruity nose.”
Beachwood Patio Project – 7.1% – “Get ready to fire up the grill, grab a deck chair, and start sippin’ this new aromatic West Coast IPA featuring Mosaic & Citra hops!”
Riip Beer Riip’n Greens – 7.5% – Back to Back winner of the Best of the West Coast IPA National Throwdown at the TopWire beer garden at Crosby Hop Farms.

All I know is that there better be a bar inside.
Altamont Beer Work’s Maui Waui and Pizza Port’s Swami’s IPAs merge into Surfin’ Tiki a new IPA that is on shelves now. You may need to see if you can get the other beers to compare them.
The Stone Brewing One Batch Dispatch series is back with the new Schoolmates Hazy Double IPA.
Here is the beer description from he brewery: “This particular hazy double IPA features a unique new hop called Anchovy. Don’t panic – despite the name, you can expect ripe watermelon flavors combined with dankness and orange cream character from “new classic” Citra.”
Here is your first look at the label for XXVIII – 2024 Firestone Walker Anniversary blend. I will update you when the blend details are available but know that if you are in California or the FW distribution network that you should get a bottle or two even without knowing what is inside the bottle.
Pasadena’s Replicant Beer is going to be creating not one but two Oktoberfest beers this year with an assist from German brewers. I can’t wait to see the label designs and see how these two beers differ from each other.
Burning Bridge Brewing has reached the two year mark.
Check their socials for the details. If you haven’t visited before, this would be a great idea to make a first visit.
There are not many transatlantic collaborations and of those, us L.A. beer fans don’t see them on store shelves. But maybe we will see the West Coast IPA, Under the Trees from Thornbridge and Urban Roots since they are from the state capital.
