Great article in Draft Magazine about beer that does no escape the state it is brewed in. Beer that you have to go after.
50 Beers, 50 States.
Avery 16
Oh how I would like to get my hands on this beer! 16 is a dry and estery saison brewed with jasmine, peaches, and honey that checks in at 7.9% ABV.
New Glarus
You could celebrate America’s revolution with some nice New Glarus Organic Revolution which is made with organic Pilsner and Caramel malt, organic German Hallertau Hops, and nothing else. The use of 100% organic hops is even more than what’s required by the USDA, and it was just recently re-certified as organic.
Goose Island
Belgian is obviously the style of 2009. From The Bruery in Orange County to Ommegang in New York, it is where the cutting edge of brewing is happening.
Now I hear through the grapevine about two new offerings from Chicago’s Goose Island. Juliet which is a Belgian Sour and Sofie which is a farmhouse ale. They are now on my ever expanding list of beers I really need to taste.
If you have sampled them and have an opinion you would like to vent then comment below. I would enjoy seeing what people think.
Session Black
Those cute, little, stubby red-labeled bottles from Full Sail are such a hit that brand extension was inevitable. What we get is a dark lager at 5.4 abv.
They will come in the same cases as the regular but with slate grey coloring and a more malty taste. I will be harassing my local Whole Foods to start stocking it soon.
My current beer wish list
These are the (4) breweries that I cannot get out here in Southern California but really want to try…..
Three Floyds
Magic Hat
Cigar City
and most of all…..NEW GLARUS!
What brewery do you wish distributed to you?
A beer I want to try, maybe you should too
I have heard some good things about this beer and I think this weekend I will have to give it a try. One reason that I haven’t yet is that it is in cans. I have this bias (slowly receding) against cans due to Pabst and Olympia. The second is that I am not a big porter fan. But some times you have to take a leap and try something new.
New Glarus Brewing
This is one of two breweries that I wish had beer here in Los Angeles. I have had the Belgian Red and the Raspberry Tart and both were beyond excellent. To give you an idea of the styles they have, here are their “unplugged” beers for 2009….Iced Barleywine, Imperial Saison, Eisbock and an Olde English Porter. Makes you want to go to Wisconsin.
