Sierra Nevada Collab-a-palooza

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is celebrating the opening of its new Mills River, North Carolina, brewery by bringing revered craft brewers to North Carolina via a cross-country festival path in 2014. A dozen craft breweries across the U.S., both up-and-comers and noted names, will join Sierra Nevada in the creation of a variety 12-pack—one partner brewery per beer—to be released in summer 2014. A multi-weekend, west-to-east tour of regional festivals will culminate with the Mills River doors opening.

The specific travel path for festivals is a work in progress, but in spring 2014, these breweries will visit Chico to develop recipes and begin brewing:

Holy Hell that is an impressive list of breweries.  From the LA perspective it would have been nice to see Craftsman on the list or Eagle Rock but hey, you can’t win ’em all.  I will be really interested in the New Glarus and Russian River combos.  I know the Firestone Walker one will be a huge hit.

I am a fan of the hopped pilsner.  It might be the only thing to get Americans to try pilsners at this point.  And add in the allure of single hop, and you might see a beer snob or two try it.  All kidding aside, I like this idea for a celebratory beer from Full Sail and maybe when I am in Portland later this month, I will find a bottle or tap handle of it.

North Coast is one of those California breweries that isn’t hip for lack of a better term.  Old Rasputin is known and loved but offerings like their Scrimshaw pilsner don’t get enough love.  But I am sure the geeks will have their interests piqued by this anniversary ale.  And the fact that they recently added three fermenters to their brewing operations.

#MashTag

BrewDog somehow manages to straddle the line of being grandstanding while still being true to the beer.  And this later Twitter inspired brew is a perfect example of that, “Inspired by the passion, knowledge and enthusiasm of craft beer drinkers, we set out to create a truly democratic craft beer. We entrusted all the important decisions to our fans, customers and anyone who wanted to learn more about the craft brewing process and cast their vote. We gave up complete control of every single decision which shaped the final beer that the #MashTag project produced.”

And what did #MashTag become?  A big 7.5% “American Brown Ale loaded with New Zealand hops and aged on Hazelnuts and Oak chips.”  Whether that combo works is another story but I am intrigued.

Now how do I hashtag a #mashtag?

Take the Black with another TV show beer

The second Game of Thrones inspired beer is for those who are sent to to the wall to protect the kingdoms from what lies north.  Ommegang’s Iron Throne was a nice, spice driven blonde  so I am looking forward to trying this stout which is something I don’t normally associate Ommegang with.

I myself would have probably done a beer called “Spoiler Alert” with a picture of {rest of post redacted}

Breaking Beer

I am not a fan of the Breaking Bad.  My wife loves it more and more with each passing episode.  But maybe with a beer in hand celebrating the show, I could get “hooked”

“Breaking Bad” is getting its own beer. Marble Brewery in Albuquerque, New Mexico will brew the “Breaking Bad” tribute beer Heisenberg’s Dark, an India Black Ale. The company announced the special brew on Instagram.The Emmy-winning AMC series has featured its characters drinking Marble Brewery beers before as well as brews from the local Santa Fe Brewery.”Breaking Bad” kicks off its final eight-episode run on Sunday, August 11.”

Melrose IPA – NOW in bottles!

Beachwood has been pumping out the bottles this year and one of their stalwart IPA’s is making its debut on July 16.  Hey, that’s today!

Here is the info on the beer: “Melrose is brewed with American 2-row malt and a touch of Canadian honey malt to accentuate the tropical and citrus hop. It’s generously dry hopped with Simcoe and Amarilllo for an over-the-top aromatic experience. As Brewmaster and co-owner Julian Shrago explains, “Melrose is a true West Coast India Pale Ale that I’ve been brewing for many years.” A throwback from his days as a homebrewer, Melrose IPA is already a favorite among Beachwood Brewing fans. “After many humbling requests, it’s finally here!” “Melrose is a great beer and we are excited to finally see it bottled for the first time,” echoes co-owner Gabriel Gordon. “There’s no doubt that those who tried Thrillseeker IPA will be pleased to have another great go-to Beachwood IPA.” Melrose IPA will be sold in 22 oz. bottles at finer craft beer retailers across Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties. The IPA will also be available on draft at both Beachwood BBQ locations.”

Their IPA’s are fantastic and they sell fast so get a bottle quick and drink it fresh.

A Slow Roll

“Slow roll: A demanding maneuver in which the pilot slowly rotates the longitudinal axis of the aircraft 360 degrees while maintaining level flight.”

I missed this beer at their recent anniversary bash (which drew in big crowds from what I hear) but I hope to get a taste of this new barrel aged offering from H24.  I want to see how a golden ale does in Bourbon barrels.

“This fruity, complex ale evolved over time to its present state – hence the name, Slow Roll. In November, we began it as a Belgian-style golden ale. We then racked the beer into bourbon barrels. Six months later, our anniversary beer is ready to perform. Admire the light copper color in your glass. Take in the aromas of pear, banana, and spice, with gentle oak and caramel notes. The first sip will reveal even more nuance, with soft caramel and bourbon in the background. It starts very effervescent, followed by a dry finish.
