Certain IPA sub-styles have not lasted. Brut IPA, I really liked. Not to be found anymore. White IPA lasted less time. Session IPA had a moment but that momentum faded. But the king of busted IPA dreams was the Cascadian or Black IPA. Rare was the one that balanced dark malt with bitterness just right.
And maybe, Common Space has unlocked it with their new Citra hop version.
Happy birthday to 21st Amendment who are breaking out the hop piñata for a West Coast IPA to mark the occasion. Not in 21oz cans though, 12 ounce instead.
Jacqui C. Smith and her artwork return to Brewyard Beer cans with Beautiful Skin. Imperial Brown Lager doesn’t ring a style bell with me but part of the proceeds goes to the Glendale YWCA so that is a great thing.
We all have our bubbles, but the El Segundo / Hop Saint one is a lot hoppier. And festive.

Add another brewery here in SoCal that is canning to make-up the tsp room deficit. RT Rogers out in the foothills of Sierra Madre has 4-packs to go now so go pick some up! Bit hard beers pictured are quite good.
Finally in cans, billed as a hoppy golden lager, is Firestone Walker’s, Welcome to LA adorned in a Rams hued blue and gold. If I remember correctly, this beer has been done a few times on draft. I hope the Marina Del Rey location thrives.
As many of us are, Beachwood Brewing is over 2020 and have decided to be bitter about it with a new IPA for what has to be a better year in 2021. The leading ingredient is labeled as “utter contempt” for 2020.
Let’s take a drive down Sunset Boulevard with a quick review of the collaboration beer from Los Angeles Ale Works and beer shoppe extraordinaire, Sunset Beer Co.
This West Coast IPA pours a vibrant orange color. There is an orange peel and pine aroma that leads to a juicy hit of tangerine for me. That is followed by a weird malty meets metal taste that is out of step with the early flavor of citrus. At the tail end is a bundle of bitterness that takes the flavors in another direction again.
What with LA’s changing attitude on breweries, you know, selling what they brew. It has been hard to keep track. But Brouwerij West is letting people know, they are open. If you are crazy for Citra hops and are enamored with Enigma hops, then this new hazy is for you.
