1. We are selling out of beer completely and as a result we are now finalizing our plans to introduce a bigger brew house which should allow us to meet the demand in time for next summer. We want to apologize to all those of you who are finding difficulty sometimes in finding our beers, but we hope that will soon no longer be an issue. We want to thank everyone for their support and it is your drinking of the beer that is allowing us to continue to grow and improve.

2. Our beers will be available in the UK starting next month. 961 Beer has shipped its first batch of Lager to the UK and we expect to be available very soon.

3. We have successfully grown our first hops in Lebanon. These are historic times for us as it is the first such project in the whole region. We aim to go full scale next year and this is all part of our policy to brew a totally Lebanese beer. Go local!

In the future, I hope we can get some of their stuff here in the US. Would be a kick to have a Fresh Hop Lebanese IPA.

Buzz Breweries

There were many beers that I wanted to have while in Denver but what is also great is hearing about breweries that are popular at home and praised for great beer that are brand new to me.

Here are three breweries to watch:

Cutt’s Ale

This Northwest style Amber Ale, named in honor of our local Cutt’s Island AKA “Dead Man’s” Island, displays a brilliantly clear reddish hue, an intense nose of pine and citrus, a medium body, malt notes of fresh toasted bread, and a pleasant lingering hop bitterness. Quite assertive for an Amber Ale, Cutt’s remains well balanced yet truly Northwest in its audacity.

Terminal Gravity: 2.5-3.0 Plato
Alc. by Volume: 6.15%

Ballz Deep Double IPA

A mash tun packed mostly with Pale Ale Malt and several different varieties of Crystal malt provide a firm, slightly sweet malt flavor while copious amounts of resiny Yakima Valley hops go berserk on bitterness, flavor and aroma.

7 Seas British Pale Ale

A very approachable, versatile Pale Ale, our 7 Sea’s version draws inspiration from the venerable traditions of proper British brewing. Brewed with generous amounts of imported Golden Promise malt, noble hop varieties, and a slightly warm fermentation, this ale displays aromas of fresh fruit, earthy hop notes, and a clean, snappy finish. Ah, nothing like a proper pint!

Papago Orange Blossom Wheat Beer
Our most popular beer. A light American Wheat Ale flavored with Mandarin Orange and Vanilla. Like a liquid old fashioned creamsicle. 4.5% ABV

Papago El Robusto Porter
An Imperial Porter. Dark as night, rich and flavorful. One of our original beers since day one. A Bronze medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival. 8% ABV

Churchill’s Wheatwine
Strong like a barleywine but smooth because of the golden wheat used to brew it. Another one of our original beers. 9.6% ABV 60 IBU’s

Ryan’s Red Ale
An Irish Red Ale but really more of an Anglo-Irish Red Ale. Red and Malty like an Irish Red Ale but with a light dose of American hops. Named for our managing partner before she married a brewer and changed her name. 6% ABV

Papago Oude Zuipers
A truly authentic Belgian Tripel. “Old Drunk” is brewed for us in Belgium. Rich golden color, lots of Belgian yeast character. Very strong. 11% ABV

Papago Elsie’s Irish Coffee Milk Stout
An Irish car bomb in a glass. A rich milk stout with 1 pound of Irish Cream flavored coffee beans added per barrel. 5.5% ABV

Central Waters has just released “Shine On” an easy drinking red ale, made to commemorate our solar hot water system and our partnership with the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA). The awesome Beer America folks brought this brewery to my attention and now I pay it forward to you…

Southern Tier Brewing is not, I repeat, not in the south. Their home is in Lakewood, New York. They have quite the line-up of beers.. Year-round | Seasonal | Local | Imperial | Ltd Imperial | Seasonal Imperial | Blackwater | Cuvée Series. What intrigued me the most was the Creme Brulee Imperial Milk Stout.

The Black Star in Texas has taken the owned by thing seriously.

Owned by and for themselves, not some conglomerate of breweries they are close to being up and running and I applaud them.

I also thought this tidbit from their website was interesting…”Drinkability is a term that comes up frequently when we’re talking about our future Black Star beers, and with the majority of our recipes, I’ve tried to tweak them to be more “drinkable.”

From a recipe standpoint, this usually means lower finishing gravities, slightly higher carbonation levels (although this is debatably more drinkable), use of wheat, and a balance of maltiness, hoppiness, and alcohol. I would say drinkability is made up of mouthfeel, refreshinicity (yeah, you heard me), and inebriatability.”
