APL BBQ @ SB

It is not often that I am jazzed about the food options at a brewery in Los Angeles. It is usually not about food quality either. It is mostly that I pick a weekend destination based on the beer. So I end up with whomever is there when I am.

All preamble to the exciting news that APL BBQ from noted chef Adam Perry Lang will be on hand each weekend at Strand Brewing in Torrance from Father’s Day weekend until September.

In the holy trinity of food that pairs with beer, pizza, tacos and BBQ would be my choices and to get the buzzworthy BBQ is an added inducement to head to Torrance.

Persimmon-versary

Hard to believe it was only 2017 when Sage Plant Based Bistro expanded into brewing. Picking up a lot of “firsts” in the process . Echo Park’s first brewery. Women owned and brewed. Using local, organic ingredients including hops from their own farm.

Here is the brewery description of their 5 year anniversary beer, “we teamed up with our favorite partners Sow-A-Heart farm to make a saison loaded with fresh persimmons aged with Oak. With a caramel nose this beer is sweet and slightly tart from the persimmons with an oaky finish.”

Malt & Whey

Here is all you really need to know to make a decision about buying the book Beer Cheese Stories by Michael Landis.

“What’s in the Book?
400 Beer & Cheese Pairings
130 Breweries with over 300 Beers
110 Cheese Makers with over 300 Cheeses
12 Cheese Boards with over 300 Accompaniments
Stories of how and why the pairing worked”

Brittle Beer

Allagash Brewing is supplying Bixby Chocolates of Maine with a key ingredient for their brittle, beer.

  • Allagash Sixteen Counties Chipotle Peanut Brittle: This peanut brittle is for the adventurist who enjoys a bit of spice and heat. Featuring the iconic Allagash Sixteen Counties beer (brewed with 100% Maine-grown grain). The brittle has a dash of chipotle and Maine Sea Salt for a mouthwatering experience.
  • Allagash White Peanut Brittle: Made with the famous Belgian-style Allagash White beer, peanuts, and a hint of Maine Sea Salt. Light and mellow with pleasing tones of malt, hops and Chocolate.

and lastly…

  • Allagash Nibby Stout: Made with Allagash North Sky Stout, this brittle has our Bixby nibs and mix of nuts.

Button Mash Back

As the door closes on Sunset Beer, a little ray of light as last week, Button Mash a few blocks down Sunset has re-opened with Tacos 1986 as a new food partner.

That means asada and other treats to go with your craft beer and endless games of Tapper.

Heat Holders

I have improved (not by much) my heat tolerance but the “hopp sauces” from Alchemy Peppers are probably out of my reach since they range from 3,000 to 45,000 SHU.

But for those that like the combo of hops and peppers, here are your options…

  • Fresno Peppers + Simcoe Hops – The original hot sauce magically mixes Fresno and red bell peppers, strawberry puree, earthy Simcoe hops, and a touch of garlic.
  • Jalapeno Peppers + Citra Hops – Born from a bewitching blend of zesty Jalapeño peppers, juicy Citra hops, and a dash of lime, this is the brand’s most temperate hot sauce.
  • Scotch Bonnet + Mosaic Hops – The hottest of the lineup, this sauce is hatched from a heavenly harmony of yellow bell peppers, fiery Scotch Bonnet peppers, fruity Mosaic hops, and a slice of pineapple.

Broken Bread

I have posted about Broken Bread the PBS show hosted by Roy Choi of Kogi’s Food Truck fame before but season 2 is dropping and if you cannot see the parallels between food and beer, well, you just ain’t watching.

This season is only three episodes in and beer has been noted and places in L.A. to go for great under recognized food spots. Stay tuned because you will see future posts because of this great show.

And why isn’t there a Roy ChoIPA yet?
