A Book & A Podcast – The Butterfly Effect

NPR and podcast fans know of Jon Ronson. A great storyteller and writer who for his next project tackles, porn.

The Butterfly Effect starts with technology altering the business of pornography and how that major change in distribution has affected lives downstream. There are stamp collections, an Italian priest and the State of Oklahoma making appearances in the episodes. Also, well, Pornhub too.

I could list of several horrible and sexist beer names for this post but instead, I am going to focus on the two places where the big events transpire plus one British cask ale that L.A. locals should look for.

1. Dieu du Ciel from Montreal where the journey begins with… “Aphrodite is a dark ale brewed with cocoa and vanilla beans. Its flavour profile offers dark chocolate, bourbon and roasted malt tones. Gentle sweetness from the vanilla harmonizes alongside the bitterness of cocoa, presenting a subtle and surprisingly balanced finish.”

2. San Fernando Brewing and their Stoney Point Stout, “A roasted American style stout with chocolate and coffee aroma; this beer takes its name from a favorite rock climbing destination in the northwest valley.”

3. From MacLeod, order up Cut & Dry, even those this series is anything but.

Read Beer

If you are like me, you can’t get enough beer reading/information. Well, now there is a site that aggregates a bunch of sites together, it is called Read Beer and I have bookmarked it to see what is being talked about and trending in the outer world beyond the boundaries of Los Angeles.

A Podcast & A Beer – Song Exploder

There are plenty of podcasts that go on forever. The kind where you decide that you won’t start one because it is better to listen to the full hour and not in snippets. But when you find a podcast that is 10-15 minutes and is really cool, that is bliss.

Song Exploder in that short time frame has a musician, member of the band, producer talk about one song. They explain the genesis of it. You hear the separated tracks (stems) and you basically hear the entire song taken apart and then played at the end.

The host and creator is Hrishikesh Hirway and he is not front and center. I would call him more of an editor. You hear from the guests which have included Björk, U2, Metallica, Solange, Spoon, REM and even composers.

For the beer, go out east to Homage Brewing and pick up some crowlers of Sound Dust or Ride the Fader. Or you can scan your beer shoppe shelves for beers that have musical names to them. One other option is the recent L.A. Ale Works L.A. Phil Brut IPA.

What’s the Date?

If you are in need of following someone else on Twitter, might I suggest…

We all know that dating beers would help (especially in the case of IPAs) and that it can be done. But for various reasons, it is still not the industry standard.

Whether this social media shaming will help or hinder is up in the air since it just started but maybe some HashTag-tivism will goad a few breweries into doing it.

Brewbound is Podding

The industry website Brewbound is entering the podcast arena with the plan to “feature interviews with the beer industry’s top founders and executives, as well as promising newcomers.”

I will be downloading the first episode to see how Brewbound editors Chris Furnari and Justin Kendall conduct the interview and what questions they ask.

Hopefully they will swing around to talk to some locals as the first two guests of the weekly interviews are Dan Kenary from Harpoon and New Realm Brewing Co-Founder and CEO Carey Falcone.

You can find the show from wherever you get your audio fix.
