Variety Box of Solitude

Topa Topa Brewing is setting out their first variety6-pack just before Labor Day weekend. The Solitude Series IPA Mixed Pack harkens back to the single hop IPA craze of years past.

You will get two beers each of Mosaic, Citra and Talus.  Here are the brewers notes from Brewmaster Casey Harris – “Mosaic has always been a standout hop, as it’s so diverse in its flavor and aroma with an array of fruity, tropical, and earthy notes. Citra is one of my favorites, and kind of finds its way into a lot of our beers – perfect for rounding things out with its strong citrus qualities. Talus is a new one, and it’s really a unique hop with intense flavors of grapefruit, stone fruit, and oak.”

There is also an “interactive QR code on the base of the mixed 6-pack provides an opportunity to share feedback on which hop pleases their palate the most.”  If this sells well, I would expect another set of three hops in box 2.

Hops & Rice

Are You Hoppy Like Me? from 21st Amendment Brewery might just be onto the next hoppy trend. Big in ABV but light due to rice in the bill could really showcase rotating hops varietals.

“This Imperial Rice IPA delivers crisp, bright and clean malt flavors, accompanied by the flavors and aroma of grapefruit, mandarin, stone fruit and lemongrass. While it may be 8.2% ABV, the rice leans it out, making it light and easy to drink! It’s dry hopped with Talus and Comet hops…”

Talus Hazy

I have had a quorum of beers with Talus hops as the main attraction and as of today, not digging it like I am Strata. But maybe, since it is a new hop, the right combination hasn’t been found to unlock it yet. Perhaps this hazy from Common Space will.

Talus

We have a newly branded hop to be on the lookout for.  Talus.  Sounds like sport utility vehicle but is a new hop that is a cross between Sabro® brand and neomexicanus.  It was bred by Michael Ferguson of John I. Haas and Jason Perrault of Yakima Chief Ranches.

What does Talus bring?  According to the press release, “big aromas of pink grapefruit, citrus rinds, dried roses, pine resin, tropical fruits and sage.”  To me, the descriptors that leap out are the roses and sage which sounds intriguing.
