Vancouver Brewery # 2 – Doomsday Brewing

Screen Shot 2015-09-12 at 7.44.10 PM

Last month, I visited (through the magic of the interwebs) breweries in Idaho and lo and behold, I received a bottle of Idaho beers from one of the featured breweries, Sawtooth.  This month’s tour stuck in the NW and lo and behold, one of the breweries I chose to feature, Doomsday scheduled up a tasting right here in LA!  I feel the power of my blogging is growing stronger like Darth Vader.

Instead of a virtual taster tray, I was able to try the Solar Flare Citrus Wheat, Agent Orange IPA and the Ender Vanilla Porter.  All but the IPA suffered from a slight sour-tart taste that signaled an over-aged beer. The Wheat beer could be sold as a slight tart wheat but the porter fell flat to me.  The acidity cancelled out the vanilla and left the beer tasting funny. The IPA was fine.  Nothing that set my taste buds aflame but solid.  Their beers are available in bottle at Sunset Beer for you to decide your feeling on them.

Other beers to try include:

Beatdown Beet Wheat

“The pink beer, A unique experiment gone horribly right. We started with a blend of pale and wheat grains for the backbone, added some mild bittering hops for balance, then we went ahead and threw in a crate of beets for sugars, flavor, and of course, color. No artificial dyes here. The beety/earthy flavors hit hard on the nose and slowly fizz off of the tongue, leaving behind a manageable bitterness. This brew is a very light and crisp easy drinker.”

Undead Chihuahua Golden

“The Undead Chihuahua thinks its bigger than it actually is.  The 2-row base is blended with caramel malts and specialty grains to give a light and very drinkable texture. Light saaz and mt hood hop additions in the boil present a malty nose with a slightly bitter tail. This beer is all bark with no bite. Unless it’s chewing up your pant leg.”

Verdugo Boulevard

Not the actual boulevard but Boulevard beer at the Verdugo who hosted a special  tasting on Saturday directly after a similar soiree at Sunset Beer Co.

I have been absent from the Glassell Park bar for too long and with a bright sunny day on their back patio beckoning, I sipped on three different beers from the Midwest brewery making a new push into L.A.

I started with the Lemon Ginger Radler which was very refreshing.  The ginger was hinted at in good balance.  This was my favorite on the afternoon.  Easy drinking is an understatement.

The Pop-Up Session IPA was fine.  But in comparison to my gold standard of Easy Jack, it faltered.  I want a certain brightness and crispness that I didn’t quite get from this one.

My other hop choice was the Heavy Lifting IPA.  Like the Pop-Up, it was fine.  Not the highest praise, but it didn’t lift itself out of the pack of IPA’s.

Now that L.A. is a destination for out of state breweries, which beers will make their mark?  After this afternoon, my vote is for the Radler.

Anniversary on Sunset

After L.A. Beer Week and without the Great American Beer Festival on the agenda, I was able to take a mini-vacation of five days from beer so that I could prepare for Sunset Beer and their anniversary party.  And this year, there is a twist…the tap list will include a collaboration with Monkish Brewing of Torrance, for the aptly named Sunset Beer’ brewed with Lotus Seeds.  I have never had Lotus Seeds so I don’t know how they will taste in a beer but if Monkish can make me enjoy pistachios in a beer, which I don’t eat in real life, then I am down with the lotus.

Review – Smuttynose Big Beer Series – Rhye IPA

IMG_6258

This is a rhino of a beer from Smuttynose (which now has a presence here in Los Angeles despite being in the rebuilding phase of their brewery).  Pours a dark orange and a bit foamy.  Takes some time to settle.  Big piney hop presence up front in the aroma.  Then the rye really takes over in the taste.  But the hops aren’t second fiddle.  More of a co-conspirator.  A bit of an alcohol aroma as I make a second pass through it.  Certainly more west than east coast. Ways heavily on the tongue.

So, it’s mid-October and the books and music are being shoved to the side for college football as I root for in order:

1. Linfield College – my alma mater which needs one more win in 5 to secure another winning season.  But they have higher goals.  Rising higher than # 2 in the country for Division 3.

2. Oregon State – my dad’s school and despite wearing orange and black have the best uniforms of the two state schools.  Mostly because a certain other team wears highlighter yellow or other strange combos of silver, yellow and green.

Fall Fest on Sunset

Tomorrow, that would be Saturday, October 27th for an all day Fall Fest celebrating the end of summer heat and the return of bigger, heavier beers. On tap will be a mix of Fest Biers and Pumpkin Ales with food pairings of sausages, chocolates and other goodies.

It is the 1st Annual Sunset Beer Co. Fall Fest! or otherwise known as The Return of the Big ‘n Heavy

And if you are in the Eagle Rock area, Colorado Wine Co. (the ancestor of Sunset Beer) is in the process of moving. A process that should finish by the end of this month. A smidgen west towards Glendale to a bigger space. That means, more beer! Six taps to be precise with the plans for tap takeovers too!

The Beer Allowance – February

For Christmas, one of the best gifts that I received was an extra $20 each month for beer or beers that I would normally not buy. And even though, I just came back with a ton of great Portland beer. There was one that I left behind. From….

And luckily the Sunset Beer Company had Logsdon in bottles for the first time and one on tap as well! So, I spent my $20 on this…
That would be Kili Wit. The Belgian Wit Bier with coriander and then on the side some Green Flash action with Rayon Vert which I have never had before. And that still leaves me with cash to spare. Even though I did partake of a Lagunitas IPA while I was shopping.
