Light and dark from Oregon way with the middle being the can release from Arts District Brewing. Always make sure that you are drinking more than just IPA’s.

~LIGHT
Upright Brewing/ Saison Vert6.5% ABV
“Saison Vert is an open fermented wheat based brew made with black limes, giving the otherwise bright beer a darker flavor profile. Layered with spice, citrus, earth, and even walnut notes, Saison Vert goes down easily with tremendous nuance. Several kegs will see out of state distribution, so look for both locally and across the country.”

~MEDIUM
Arts District Brewing/ Traction IPA7.8% ABV
“A vibrant and luscious IPA layered with ripe papaya, mango, citrus, and fresh cut grass. Finishes clean and dry. Hop forward to a spotlight on the Mosaic varietal.”

~DARK
Deschutes Brewery/ Black Butte Anniversary XXIX12% ABV
“Every year, we celebrate our anniversary with an imperial, barrel-aged version of our flagship Black Butte Porter. This year, to celebrate 29 years, of brewing, we’ve added Chocolate Malt, cocoa and cinnamon for another multi-layered flavor experience.”

Let’s have another round of big and expensive beers. For when you need to impress first and then lie down after drinking.

~LIGHT
Fantome/ Brise BonBon8.0% ABV
“With joy and a little bit of mischief, Fantôme brewer Dany Prignon dedicates this very bitter beer to all of the many varieties of brise-bonbons – literally, ball-breakers – in the world. Specifically, this beer is meant for wise-guys, braggarts, pains-in-the-ass, muck-rakers, troublemakers, know-it-alls, stuffed-shirts, blow-hards and bores, as well as nut-cracking, wind-bag, prattling-on, self-appointed experts on everything, and nose-in-the-air snobs, convinced they can do anything better than you. Dany intended to make a beer too bitter for a normal person to enjoy. The problem is, everyone loves it!”

~MEDIUM
Three Weavers & Alpine/ Off the Beaten Path Double IPA9.0% ABV
“This Double IPA is built on the foundation of mutual love, respect, and camaraderie that exists between Alpine Beer Company and Three Weavers. Friendship truly makes the best beers and we hope you enjoy the product of ours.”

~DARK
Fremont Brewing/ Rusty Nail13.2% ABV
“The Rusty Nail begins life as The First Nail, an oatmeal stout of epic proportions with brewer’s licorice, smoked barley, and pale malt and is then aged on cinnamon bark. She becomes the Rusty Nail after spending 15 months in 12-year old bourbon barrels. The Rusty Nail pounds your palate, challenges your perception of all that you’ve known of beer, and leaves you wanting … another sip.”

This month I am suggesting that you try a little bit of everything starting with a 3-Way Collaboration and ending in a super big and burly barleywine. A little America, Belgium and England this month.

~LIGHT
Mason Aleworks / Kern River / Eagle Rock/ Gutterball Trio5.3% ABV
“We got together with our friends at Mason Ale Work (San Diego) & Eagle Rock Brewery (Los Angeles) to make this light, refreshing Mosiac, Idaho 7 & Denali hopped IPA.”

~MEDIUM
Green Flash/ Baroque Belgique7.0% ABV
“If Green Flash were founded in historical Belgium, Baroque Belgique would have been our flagship brew. A bold and complex layering of herbal hops finds delicate balance from traditional malts. Bottle conditioning with fresh ale yeast and Brettanomyces adds a funky finishing touch, creating a delightfully bright effervescence, dryness, and continuously evolving character.”

~DARK
Dogfish Head/ Olde School Barleywine15.0% ABV
“Inspired by a tale of a cask doctor who brought sluggish ales back to life by suspending a fig in them. Brewed from 100% Maris Otter pale ale malt, a blend of fine hops and conditioned on dates and figs. User Instructions: open bottle, pour contents into two snifters. Enjoy. ALTERNATIVELY: Walk hand-in-neck with bottle into the middle of the woods. Use shovel to dig 2×2 hole three feet deep. Seal bottle in plastic bag. Place in hole and pack with dirt. Memorize location and leave. Return exactly one year later. Dig up bottle, open and enjoy.”

Sean Suggests for January 2017

For January the theme is “North of $10” & Barrel-Aged, so let’s dive into three big beers to keep you warm in our one cold L.A. month.

~LIGHT
Good Beer Co./ Hot Totty 5.00% ABV
“Farmhouse ale aged in American oak bourbon barrels with lemon zest and ginger. This dry and complex ale is inspired by a popular cold remedy that includes hot ginger tea, bourbon, and a squeeze and lemon – sometimes referred to as a Hot Toddy. The resulting beer is bursting with bourbon, ginger and citrus flavors. “

~MEDIUM
The Commons/ Bourbon Little Brother 8.80% ABV
“Little Brother is a rich and malty ale. A bit of roastiness, toffee, candy and chocolate come through as it warms. A smaller batch of Little Brother was aged in a Heaven Hill Bourbon barrel and blended back in for a touch of Bourbon. Little Brother is a pleasant and satisfying cold weather warmer. “

~DARK
Avery/ Tangerine Quad 10.00% ABV
“Patiently aged in the finest of Bourbon barrels, this bold Belgian-style Quadrupel layers notes of rich, dark fruit, vanilla, and caramel with a burst of tangerine peel culminating in the vibrancy of this full-bodied creation”

Sunset 5

capture
Maybe October 22nd is an auspicious day to start selling craft beer. Not only does Southland Beer celebrate that day but so is Sunset Beer Co.!

The Echo Park beer stop is throwing a 5th Anniversary Party. To pique your interest they have been hoarding some kegs so expect what they call a “wild” tap list. Considering some of the beer events they have thrown recently, that could have some really rare treats a week before Halloween.

Tap 8 for Charity

Capture
As if going to Sunset Beer store wasn’t already a habit, (It is for me, for sure) now they have gone and added another reason to drive to Echo Park, their new Charity Tap program!

Here is the rundown: Each month the bar portion of the Beer Co. will be donating a portion of proceeds from a single draft line to various local and community organizations. February’s donations will go to 826LA which is right down the street helping students with after-school and weekend tutoring. All you have to do is purchase a beer from the Charity Tap line and this month, Tap #8 will be the charity line.

This way you don’t have to agonize over your beer choice. Just pick #8 this month.

Review – Morgan Marzen from Eagle Rock Brewery

Screen Shot 2015-10-04 at 10.54.04 AM

Last year, Sunset Beer Co. collaborated with Monkish on a 3rd anniversary beer.  This year they stayed closer to home and enlisted Eagle Rock Brewery to help them celebrate year 4.

Here are my thoughts on the Morgan Marzen…

#1 on the taplist at the crowded bar that was 1/2 Dodger faithful and 1/2 beer geeks, the beer pours a bright and crystal clear orange with reddish tints.  This beer is all about the malt lots of toasty grain notes in each sip.  It is also sparkly on the tongue with a good dose of carbonation.  There is a Germanic note of lager metallic on the back end but the next taste re-asserts the grain to the forefront.  This is very much to style.  No bells or whistles, just a simple reproduction of a classic beer.  Plus the colorful label is another design win.

The Beer Allowance – May

Last month, I picked up a box of spring seasonal’s from Pyramid Brewing.

This month, I took my $20 to Sunset Beer Co. and picked up Solidarity, the beer from Eagle Rock that really made their name in the beginning.

Then I picked up a Dupont beer by the name of Posca Rustica that I had seen in many mouth watering e-mails from Vanberg & Dewulf who brings them to the U.S. I am curious about it because part of the description said “odiferous”.

Holiday beer at Sunset

In a little over a week, one of the new craft beer hot spots in Los Angeles, Sunset Beer, will be hosting a ……

“Kinda-Sorta Holiday Beer Class A.K.A. Our Inaugural Beer Tasting Class!

Here at Sunset Beer Company, we plan to host many beer tasting classes, but we can only have one first! For this one we will be exploring some of our favorite year-round beers along with some of the best for the holidays. And they’ll be paired with cheese!

A little about that whole cheese thing: When most people think about cheese they think about wine. Yet most of the cheese experts I’ve met swear that beer is a much better match. So we’ll be exploring just how great of a match they can be. Hurry up though, as this is already filling-up very quickly!”

Here is part of the line-up Gouden Carolus Noel, Alesmith Yulesmith,
Avec Les Bons Voeux de la Brasserie Dupont and Port Santa’s Little Helper . . . and maybe some rarities from their new and growing cellar.

Here are the details if you want to check and see if there is still room.

Sunset Beer Co. is about to open….

…and by about to, I mean tomorrow, Saturday!

I toured the new space which has a beautiful grand hotel bar look to it with dark woods and bookcases and big art pieces on the walls.

It is split into two sections. You walk in and see a row of coolers to the right which hold the starting inventory, which will grow. Right now you can pick up Aphrodite from Ommegang or an Oyster Stout from Porterhouse of Ireland,

The bar section is separated a bit on the other side but you can still see the bottles while perusing the tap list. With Alex Macy at the helm you can expect a good variety of beer for all levels of beer enthusiasts. Last night, Dortmunder Export from Eagle Rock was a popular selection.

So clear some room out of your ‘fridge so you can support a local business!
